Chapter 5 - Magic Scrolls

Zanac POV

"Is that all?" I asked, eyes moving over the list of magic scrolls laid out on the table.

"Yes, my lord," the vice guild master replied.

The guild master was away in another city lucky for me. One less powerful figure to deal with today.

Still, this old man with grey hair wasn't weak. From what I knew, he was a Tier 3 magic caster already one of the strongest spellcasters in the entire Kingdom. Pathetic, honestly, but impressive by Re-Estize standards.

I looked back down at the scrolls.

Magic scrolls were… interesting. Useful. And ridiculously expensive.

In simple terms, scrolls let you skip the two biggest problems of magic, that is to know the spell already and had time to cast the spell.

A scroll already had the spell stored inside, ready to activate. So even someone with mediocre ability or someone who ran out of mana could still cast powerful magic with it.

Once activated, the scroll glows and crumbles into particles of light. One use only. Convenient, but very costly.

There were, however, limits.

Most scrolls were made at the lowest possible caster level, so their power wasn't amazing.

Ofcourse if the creator have some special skills like to buff the spell, the scroll be more powerful.

Also You could only use a scroll if your class matched the magic system it came from. A priest-type scroll needed a faith-based class.

A necromancer can use necromancy releted scroll.

Unless… you had special abilities like Nfirea Bareare, who could bypass item restrictions completely. Lucky brat.

There were exceptions, of course some thief classes could "fake" the requirement and trick the scroll but that didn't help me right now.

I sighed internally.

So this was the best the Kingdom had to offer.

A handful of weak scrolls, made by Tier 1 and Tier 2 casters. Not a single Tier 3 scroll in sight.

If I remember correctly, the Slane Theocracy already had Tier 4 scrolls lying around like souvenirs. The difference in power levels is… depressing.

Pathetic, but expected.

"Give me these ones," I said, pointing at a few options on the list.

The vice guild master glanced at one of the subordinates standing beside him. The man nodded and quietly left the room to fetch them leaving just the two of us behind.

…We're alone.

Why did that suddenly sound suspicious?

I shook off the thought.

Being royalty had its perks. They brought me to one of the best rooms if not the best offered refreshments, no waiting in line, and every important figure came personally to attend to me.

Every day I get to eat a new dish too. And honestly? It tastes good. Not like modern-world food, but there's still variety.

No bills or assignments.

I'm starting to like this life.

"Prince Zanac, do you need anything else?" The vice guild master's voice snapped me out of the comfortable daydream I was sinking into.

"No," I replied.

He blinked, surprised. "…Nothing else?"

Of course he's surprised. If I really wanted something rare or dangerous, I could just command someone from the palace. But coming here personally made him think I wanted something special, something secret, something I didn't want others to know.

But there was nothing like that. It was just curiosity.

And even if I did want to negotiate something privately, I'm not stupid enough to think it would stay secret. The Magician's Guild might look independent, but they're not free from politics. Nobles have their own people here. Even the king's faction probably has contacts inside.

And let's not forget the Eight or Nine Fingers or whichever group is crawling around this kingdom. They definitely have spies in every major building.

Everyone who hears about my visit today will probably assume I came here to form alliances or gather power for the throne.

And with the body I currently have short, chubby, and looking like I've never lifted anything heavier than a spoon they'll assume I'm just some overconfident, clueless prince trying to play politics.

Fools.

Still…I do need to decide whether I even want the throne.

Sure, being king comes with benefits. Power. Authority. Access to the army. Connections. Influence.

But all of that comes with liabilities just as big if not bigger.

If something goes wrong, the king takes the blame. If the country collapses, the king dies first. If a monster army attacks, congratulations, you're the first sacrifice.

So I'm not interested. Not unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

I've always preferred quality over quantity, and compared to someone like Rimuru, who had both quality and quantity, I don't see myself getting anywhere close to that by becoming king of a kingdom this… fragile.

So for now, ruling Re-Estize doesn't look like an opportunity.

But… political power isn't useless either.

In a world like this, having authority can be just as valuable as having strength. Against enemies on the same level, against nobles, against kingdoms political power can decide life or death.

Even if I don't want the throne, I can't dismiss it outright.

I have to keep as many possibilities open as possible.

If becoming king benefits my survival or long-term plans, then I'll take the crown.

If it becomes a liability, I'll drop it without hesitation.

For now, the option of becoming king stays on the table. It's not my goal…but it's not off the list either.
