I sighed, a smile tugging at my lips. "Both of you are cute."
Jamie immediately grinned, his expression triumphant. Phoenix crossed his arms proudly, a smug smile on his face.
"But..." I lifted the nearly empty cake box, the last cupcake sitting forlornly inside. "We only have one cupcake left."
Both of them stared at it, their eyes widening with hunger.
"And I think it belongs to me," Phoenix declared, his voice taking on a pleading tone.
Jamie gasped, outraged. "Absolutely not! It's mine! I've been working all day, right Holland?"
"We've all been working all day," Phoenix replied coolly. "But only I deserve a reward. The cake is mine. Holland already agreed."
"I absolutely did not."
"You were about to."
The two of them continued bickering, their voices overlapping as I stood helplessly between them. I gave the pediatrician carrying the cake box an apologetic smile, and he looked like he was trying very hard not to laugh. He handed the box over to me and then left quietly.
