Chapter 28 - Chapter 28. The Night the Mountain Watched

Night settled over Heavenly Peak with a calm that felt unnatural—

too quiet,

too gentle,

like the mountain was holding its breath.

Lanterns glowed softly along the courtyard.

Ruolan was brewing tea in the kitchen hut.

Feng Xiao practiced small flame spheres, determined not to burn anything.

Wei Tian stood on the cliff edge like a sentinel carved from iron.

Tian Wen sat alone outside his dormitory, knees drawn up, staring at the sky.

Lin Xuanji approached him with two steaming cups.

"Tea?" he offered.

Tian Wen hesitated—

then nodded.

They sat side by side in silence for a while.

Tian Wen finally whispered, "Why did the mountain help me?"

Lin Xuanji nearly spit his tea.

He coughed. "Mountain? Helping? No, no, it's just… it has moods."

Tian Wen turned to him slowly. "Moods?"

"Yes." Lin Xuanji looked dead serious. "Sometimes it hums. Sometimes it shakes. Sometimes it builds things without permission."

Tian Wen blinked. "…Is the mountain possessed?"

"Probably."

Tian Wen processed this for a moment, then nodded with surprising acceptance.

"…That explains the glowing floor."

Lin Xuanji sighed with relief. Thank goodness he believes nonsense so easily.

A soft breeze swept across the courtyard.

The mountain hummed again—gentle, rhythmic, almost like a lullaby.

Tian Wen glanced around uneasily.

"Is it… doing that because of me?"

Lin Xuanji considered lying.

Then lying some more.

Then telling a truth-ish lie.

"Yes. Probably."

Tian Wen's shoulders tensed. "Because I'm weak?"

"No," Lin Xuanji said firmly. "Because you're new."

Tian Wen blinked.

"…The mountain greets newcomers?"

"Yes," Lin Xuanji nodded sagely. "Like a dog. Except it's a mountain."

"…"

Tian Wen stared at him like he wasn't sure if this man was wise or insane.

Lin Xuanji was not sure either.

Before Tian Wen could reply, Ruolan peeked out from the kitchen hut.

"S-Sect Master, tea is ready—oh! You are already drinking tea."

Feng Xiao appeared behind him. "What are you doing spying from behind a pot?"

"I-I wasn't spying!"

"You definitely were."

"No—!"

Lin Xuanji smiled faintly. "You two done arguing?"

"No."

"Yes."

They answered at the same time.

Tian Wen gave a faint, almost invisible smile.

A brittle thing.

But real.

Wei Tian approached with measured steps.

"Sect Master. Outer perimeter clear."

Lin Xuanji nodded. "Good work."

Wei Tian's gaze turned toward Tian Wen.

"Your breathing earlier today—irregular, but focused. Improve consistency and your qi will settle faster."

Tian Wen bowed slightly. "Thank you."

Wei Tian saluted.

"A warrior's path begins with breath."

Ruolan whispered to Feng Xiao, "He sounds scary but… helpful."

Feng Xiao nodded. "That's how you know he's strong."

Lin Xuanji leaned toward Ling Xueyin, who emerged from the shadows with silent grace.

"Is everyone in this sect going to be dramatic?" he asked quietly.

She replied, "You attract such people."

"I didn't ask to attract anything."

"You didn't ask for a mountain artifact either," she added.

Lin Xuanji glared at her. "That was not my choice."

"Most things worth having aren't," she said softly.

He froze.

Before he could respond, Tian Wen spoke again.

"Sect Master."

Lin Xuanji turned.

Tian Wen bowed deeply, his voice steady but carrying a shadow.

"Thank you for today. I… don't know how to repay it."

Lin Xuanji waved a hand. "You don't need to repay anything."

Tian Wen shook his head.

"No. You gave me something I never thought I'd feel again. A path. A chance."

His voice hardened.

"And I'll become strong enough to make that chance worth something."

Lin Xuanji smiled, just slightly.

"That's the spirit."

Tian Wen straightened.

Then something strange happened.

The mountain hummed again—

but this time, the sound was different.

Lower.

Deeper.

More… expectant.

Ruolan shivered. "S-Sect Master… why is the mountain humming like that?"

Feng Xiao frowned. "That's not the usual hum."

Wei Tian's grip tightened on his spear. "Something approaches."

Lin Xuanji stiffened. "Wait—System. Explain."

(Host. Tian Wen's awakening created a faint signal.)

What kind of signal?!

(One his enemies can sense.)

Lin Xuanji felt his heart drop.

"Oh no."

Tian Wen's eyes sharpened instantly.

"My stepmother?"

(Not yet. But her clan has noticed.)

Lin Xuanji looked at the others urgently.

"Everyone, inside. Now."

Wei Tian moved immediately.

Ruolan grabbed Tian Wen's sleeve.

Feng Xiao's flames lit her palms.

Ling Xueyin placed a hand on Lin Xuanji's arm.

"Not tonight," she whispered. "But soon."

The humming softened.

The danger passed.

For now.

Tian Wen took a long, shaking breath.

Lin Xuanji clapped him gently on the shoulder.

"You're safe here," he said. "We'll protect you. All of us."

Tian Wen lowered his gaze.

"…Thank you."

The mountain hummed once more—

this time warm, almost proud—

as if accepting him fully.

Night settled again.

Heavenly Peak slept…

…except for the mountain itself,

which kept its silent, ancient watch

over its new disciple.
