Chapter 24 - Chapter 24. The Mountain Tests a Broken Blade

Tian Wen followed them up the stone steps of Heavenly Peak in silence.

He didn't look left or right.

He didn't ask questions.

He didn't marvel at the view.

He simply climbed, jaw clenched, as if the act of walking itself was a battle he refused to lose.

Ruolan watched him anxiously from behind Lin Xuanji, whispering, "Sect Master… is he always like this?"

Feng Xiao whispered back, "He's like a sword someone snapped and forced back together."

Lin Xuanji muttered, "That's… uncomfortably accurate."

Wei Tian marched beside them, studying Tian Wen with a soldier's scrutiny.

Ling Xueyin walked behind the boy—not intrusively, but in a way that subtly steadied the air around him, preventing his unstable qi from tearing at him.

Tian Wen didn't notice.

He was too exhausted.

Or too numb.

When they reached the courtyard, Tian Wen hesitated.

"This… is the sect?"

Lin Xuanji exhaled. "Yes. It's small, but we're building—"

A rumble rolled beneath their feet.

Lin Xuanji went pale. "NO. Not now—"

The mountain pulsed.

Then hummed.

Then the ground beneath Tian Wen lit up in faint silver lines, forming a glowing circle around him.

Wei Tian stepped forward instantly.

"Sect Master! A formation—"

"DON'T ATTACK IT!" Lin Xuanji shouted.

The glow intensified.

Ruolan yelped and hid behind a pillar.

Feng Xiao raised her flames, unsure if she needed them.

Tian Wen froze as the light climbed around him like mist.

"What… is this…?"

Lin Xuanji forced calm into his voice. "It's the mountain."

Tian Wen frowned. "The mountain?"

"Yes," Lin Xuanji said. "It does… things."

The System chimed in his mind.

(Host. Initiating Spiritual Replacement Compatibility Test.)

Lin Xuanji stiffened. What test?!

(Tian Wen's spiritual root is gone. The mountain is checking if another path is viable.)

AND YOU'RE DOING THIS WITHOUT ASKING ME?!

(Correct.)

Lin Xuanji ground his teeth. "Of course."

Tian Wen looked down at the glowing circle, his fists trembling.

"…Is this dangerous?"

Lin Xuanji hesitated.

Ling Xueyin stepped forward, her voice gentle.

"It will not harm you. The peak recognizes those who seek strength honestly."

Tian Wen's breath caught—not at her words, but at something deep inside the glow.

For the first time since they met, emotion flickered across his eyes.

Hope.

Fear.

Anger.

The raw longing of someone who had been denied everything.

The light rose higher.

The ground pulsed again.

And with a soft, ringing tone—

The glow wrapped around Tian Wen's chest.

Ruolan gasped.

Feng Xiao stepped closer despite herself.

Wei Tian steadied his stance.

Tian Wen's face twisted—not in pain, but in shock.

"…Something… warm…"

Lin Xuanji clenched his fists.

The System murmured:

(Host. Mountain has confirmed compatibility.)

Compatibility with WHAT?!

(A new cultivation path.)

Lin Xuanji stared. A what?

(Tian Wen can cultivate without a spiritual root.)

Lin Xuanji nearly choked.

The mountain hummed again, softer now, like a welcome.

The light began to dim.

Tian Wen staggered, but before he fell, Ling Xueyin lightly touched his shoulder—

a subtle, controlled gesture—

steadying him without making him feel weak.

He straightened slowly, breathing hard.

"What… what did it do to me?"

Lin Xuanji stepped forward carefully.

"It seems," he said slowly, "that Heavenly Peak has accepted you."

Tian Wen blinked, stunned.

"I… but I don't have—there's nothing—"

Ruolan spoke softly, "The mountain doesn't need a spiritual root… maybe."

Feng Xiao nodded. "It gave you something. Or found something inside you."

Wei Tian bowed his head. "Heavenly Peak does not waste effort."

Tian Wen looked at his hands, trembling slightly.

"For three years… I couldn't feel anything. No warmth. No qi. Nothing…"

He swallowed hard.

"But now… something moved."

Lin Xuanji gave him the gentlest smile he could muster.

"That means you belong here."

Tian Wen's eyes widened.

Then lowered.

Then—very faintly—softened.

"…Thank you, Sect Master."

Lin Xuanji felt his chest tighten, but he only nodded.

"Let's get you settled."

Ruolan hurried to guide him.

Feng Xiao followed with a curious stare.

Wei Tian returned to patrol.

Ling Xueyin remained beside Lin Xuanji, her voice quiet.

"He survived everything. He will survive this too."

Lin Xuanji let out a slow breath.

"Yeah… I think so too."

But as he watched Tian Wen walk toward the new dormitory, Lin Xuanji couldn't shake the feeling:

This boy…

This disciple…

Would shake the entire mountain before long.

And the mountain seemed delighted about it.
