Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Sniped

Roy's indifferent and unconcerned attitude confirmed to Saeko Busujima that this terrifying disaster had nothing to do with the strange young man in front of her.

Saeko Busujima asked the question that concerned her most. "What are you going to the military base for?"

Dong! Dong! Dong!

Roy slammed the accelerator, and the large truck rammed into the zombies on the road. He answered truthfully, "I'm borrowing their weapons for a bit. I need to clear out these zombies."

The moment he said this, Roy noticed a slight flush of excitement cross Saeko Busujima's beautiful face in his peripheral vision.

She was thrilled!

Combined with Roy's performance in slaughtering zombies earlier, Saeko had vaguely guessed his purpose when he suggested going to a military base.

After a moment of hesitation, Saeko Busujima slowly began, "Actually, there is one thing that has always bothered me..."

Listening to Saeko Busujima starting to recount her past, Roy's mouth twitched as he drove. Girl, I'm not interested in your story. Once you guide me to the military base, our paths diverge.

Saeko Busujima, however, seemed to have found a kindred spirit and continued to speak about her troubles regardless.

In middle school, Saeko Busujima was assaulted by a pervert on her way home. But she deliberately allowed the pervert to get close, then used her wooden sword to inflict severe damage, breaking his leg and shoulder blade.

In reality, it was excessive self-defense.

However, considering it was a middle school girl defending against a pervert, the police did not press charges against Saeko Busujima.

From that moment on, Saeko Busujima realized she had strong violent tendencies. When she was beating the pervert, she felt immense happiness and excitement. She felt that she harbored an unforgivable dark side and was unworthy of having a maiden's heart.

How could Roy not know about her past? He had noticed it earlier—when Saeko separated from Takashi Komuro and the others, she put on an act of reluctant parting, but her heart was actually joyful.

Because she was about to participate in a massacre!

"What should I do?" Saeko Busujima looked conflicted. At this moment, she seemed like a fragile young girl. The excitement she felt when she saw Roy performing his Musou (slaughter) through the horde of zombies was indescribable.

She believed she had found someone similar to herself, which was why Saeko Busujima decided to open up.

"Don't ask me. I don't know, and I don't care!" Roy curled his lip. What now? Does she expect him to hug her tightly and gently guide her with soft words?

Saeko Busujima looked disappointed.

After a few minutes of silence, Roy sighed. He still wasn't ruthless enough. "It's not necessarily a bad thing to act according to your nature. Just like me, I occasionally do things that others might find completely insane."

A hint of wildness hung on Roy's smile.

Saeko Busujima's eyes, which had lost their light, grew brighter and brighter, as if she had found a new life purpose.

"We're here!"

Looking up, at the end of the wide road, a dilapidated base gate came into view. It seemed to have gone through a fierce battle, surrounded by towering walls.

A makeshift human barricade blocked the gate. It was easy for an adult to climb over, but it was enough to stop the zombies.

The two jumped down from the large truck.

Seeing the empty military base ahead, Roy felt his initial guess was correct. With the military strength of this base, even one hundred thousand zombies might not be able to break through. Only a virus spread through the air or water could silently take out an entire base.

"Something's wrong. It's too quiet."

Roy frowned. Had the American military evacuated, or had they all been wiped out?

"Are those human corpses?" Saeko Busujima pointed to the pile of bodies beside the road.

Roy followed her gaze. He initially thought they were zombies, but upon closer inspection, some of the bodies showed no signs of zombification—they had bullet wounds!

Suddenly, a strong sense of danger came over him. Roy abruptly raised his head and looked towards a tall tower within the military base, approximately six hundred meters away.

Saeko Busujima followed Roy's gaze, slightly tilting her body. This small action saved her.

Bang!

Suddenly, Roy heard a faint sound. He followed the source of the noise and saw a small hole in the ground two meters behind Saeko Busujima, with dust floating up.

Someone was sniping them, and they were using a suppressor!

Wind-Walking!

Roy's expression changed. He didn't hesitate to activate the special effect of his Wind-Chasing Boots, boosting his Agility attribute to SSS-rank. With fierce winds wrapping around his legs, he scooped up Saeko Busujima and dashed to the blind spot of the wall on the left for cover.

Bang!

While scrambling for cover, Roy tossed a stone, smashing the surveillance camera mounted on the wall.

At that moment, in the base's tall tower, a blonde, blue-eyed young man looked through his scope and saw the teenager quickly escaping to the blind spot. A flash of astonishment crossed his eyes.

"That brat moves fast."

Welin Jarvis, the blonde youth, was surprised. That kind of movement didn't look like an untrained kid.

The tall girl beside him looked older, probably the brat's older sister or something, so he planned to shoot her first and leave the kid to play with later. Turns out he misjudged.

"Welin, stop playing around. If you attract those zombies here, we'll have more trouble." A rough male voice came over the radio.

"Alright~"

The blonde youth replied listlessly.

The sudden zombie outbreak had turned most of the soldiers in the base into zombies, leaving only a dozen or so survivors. However, relying on powerful firepower, they had managed to clear all the zombies inside the base.

The voice coming over the radio belonged to the highest-ranking military officer left in the base, Lieutenant Alton.

They were responsible for protecting an old professor conducting field research in Japan, but Welin didn't see the point.

It was his turn on duty today. Welin Jarvis loved to mess with the Japanese people who sought refuge in the base, using his sniper rifle to create challenges for the medical examiner.

After all, no one would hold him accountable.

In this lawless, chaotic world, he fully indulged his dark side.

...

Under the towering wall.

Roy placed Saeko Busujima on the ground. The bullet had blown a small hole in her chest, and blood gushed out like a fountain. Her face was visibly pale.

The sniper had clearly aimed for her heart, but her movement in the crucial moment had shifted the bullet slightly.

Saeko Busujima mumbled, "Am I going to die?"

"Do you think that's possible?"

Roy replied, pulling out two bottles of Low-Grade Life Potion and feeding them to Saeko Busujima. The fact that the bullet passed through her chest was actually a good thing; otherwise, without tools, extracting the bullet would be impossible.

All that was left was to worry about stopping the bleeding.

A burst of emerald-green light emanated from Saeko Busujima's body. Her pale face regained a hint of color, and her mental state improved significantly. She looked at Roy with surprise.

Roy said, "I will avenge you."

Saeko Busujima drifted off into a groggy sleep, a satisfied smile on her lips. The slaughter feast she couldn't participate in would be completed by Roy on her behalf.
