After casually rubbing the samurai boy into the ground, Gary felt refreshed and smoothly traversed Viridian Forest.

Finally, around noon, he arrived at the entrance of Pewter City.

Compared to Viridian City, Pewter City undoubtedly had more urban characteristics. The deep gray main color scheme perfectly matched the rock-type aesthetic.

However, what was with this small shack and a pile of rocks in front of him?

"Come, come, young man, make some money, want to buy some rocks?" A robust old man wearing a knitted wool hat enthusiastically spoke up.

This, without a doubt, was probably the former Gym Leader of Pewter Gym, Brock's cheap dad, Uncle Flint.

"Uh… Uncle, do you have this kind of rock?" Gary pulled out a piece of paper and drew a glass-ball-like rock with a genetic spiral pattern inside.

"Oh dear, let me see… No." The strange rock-selling uncle shook his head helplessly.

"See? It's not that I don't want to buy, you don't have the goods even if I give you the chance." Gary spread his hands: "So, pack up and go home early. I still need to challenge Pewter Gym."

"You want to challenge Pewter Gym?" Flint suddenly looked up.

"I am a Pokemon Trainer, of course I'm going to challenge an official Gym recognized by the Pokémon League." Gary replied as a matter of course.

"Oh~ Brock is very strong, young man, are you sure you're up to it?" Uncle Flint questioned.

Gary pouted: "Brock of Pewter Gym specializes in Rock-type Pokemon, and his lineup includes an Onix over level 20, which is quite tricky, but 'very strong' might be an exaggeration."

"It looks like you're the type who does their homework in advance." Uncle Flint nodded admiringly.

"If it were the previous Gym Leader, he would indeed be quite formidable, but Brock is a newcomer, and I hear he's responsible for daily chores and looking after his younger siblings, so his training time is probably limited."

Gary spoke bluntly: "If it weren't for Onix's sheer size giving him an advantage, Pewter Gym would probably quickly fall to the bottom ranks of the Kanto official Gyms, wouldn't it?"

This wasn't Gary exaggerating; among the eight top-tier Gyms in Kanto, Pewter Gym and Cerulean Gym were currently the most problematic.

The reasons were similar: Uncle Flint of Pewter Gym and Aunt of Cerulean Gym, both formerly strong ex-Gym Leaders, suddenly disappeared.

Brock and the four young girls of Cerulean Gym had not received much formal training, causing their Gyms' strength to plummet.

In contrast, Erika of Celadon City, who smoothly inherited the Gym from her family, performed much better.

"Alas~ This is all due to Brock's irresponsible father." Uncle Flint sighed, pointing ahead: "Follow the main road, and you'll reach Pewter Gym. You can go now."

"Well then, Uncle, we'll meet again." After greeting Uncle Flint, Gary continued his journey.

Judging by Uncle Flint's appearance, it shouldn't be long before he returns to the Gym, and soon Brock will also be able to put down his family burdens and pursue his dreams.

In a few more years, when the complete Brock returns to guard Pewter Gym, that's when the Kanto newcomers will truly understand what it means to face a challenge~

Thinking of that scene, Gary was quite looking forward to it… He didn't go directly to the Gym. After entering Pewter City, Gary still went to the Pokémon Center first, as usual.

He had been busy rushing on the road in Viridian City and had forgotten to register for the Indigo League.

So, Gary immediately came to the Pokémon Center in Pewter City.

He handed his Pokedex to Nurse Joy, and his Trainer data was logged into the Indigo League's main computer.

Nurse Joy smiled as she returned the Pokedex to Gary: "Alright, your registration for the competition has been processed."

"Thank you for your trouble." After thanking Nurse Joy, Gary had Eevee and the others' physical conditions checked, took a break to drink a cup of coffee, and then, feeling refreshed, arrived at Pewter Gym.

As a long-standing traditional Gym, Pewter Gym's facade featured ancient-looking rock decorations, appearing solemn and dignified.

Gary thought about Brock's reserved personality and couldn't help but chuckle; it really suited Brock's style.

"Eevee, are you ready? Our first battle, we must win beautifully!" Gary said confidently, arms crossed.

"Eevee!" Eevee, perched on Gary's shoulder, responded very obligingly.

"Ding ~ Kanto series quest, 'Towards Indigo Plateau,' begins.

Current progress (0/8).

Current quest: Obtain the Pewter Gym badge.

Reward: 500 Achievement Points, TM: [Rollout]."

"Here it comes, here it comes~" Gary smiled and raised an eyebrow, finally starting the main quest.

Without hesitation, Gary pushed open the door and entered Pewter Gym.

Walking through the dim corridor and arriving at the Gym's battle arena, Gary frowned. Pewter Gym wasn't so poor that it couldn't even turn on the lights, was it?

Slam! As Gary was complaining, a spotlight shone down from the ceiling.

A spiky-haired, squinty-eyed man in a green vest sat cross-legged on a seat not far from Gary.

"Who goes there?" Brock spoke with a serious expression.

It must be said that before the art style broke, Brock still had some of the demeanor of a master.

"I am Gary from Pallet Town, and I'm here to challenge Pewter Gym!" Gary stepped forward and announced loudly.

"Interesting. You and Eevee seem very close. In that case, I accept your challenge!" Brock stood up and snapped his fingers.

Slam! The lights in the entire Gym came on, illuminating the arena. Gary could now see the full scope of the battlefield.

The arena was the standard size for the League, with exposed pipes and steel beams on the ceiling, giving it a very hardcore industrial look.

Brock stood up and walked to the Gym Leader's command position.

"The rules are 2-on-2. Do you have any questions?" He took out a remote control and activated a switch for the rock arena, and the battleground with its rocky terrain converged from both sides towards the center.

"No problem, let's go." Gary nodded awkwardly.

There was no professional referee, and Gary didn't expect a detailed description of the professional battle rules.

"Then, my first one is it! Go, Onix!!" Seeing the arena ready, Brock took the initiative and sent out his ace, Onix.

The two-story-tall Onix, seen up close, was quite visually imposing.

This was also Brock's strategy: come out and scare you first, which often makes many newcomers lose their composure.

Gary looked at Onix with interest: "This Onix, it's still young, isn't it? Its size doesn't seem to have reached its limit either."

Hearing Gary's remark, Brock frowned slightly. He had met a tough opponent; he wasn't scared at all!

"Less talk, bring out your Pokemon." Brock urged.

"Don't worry, it'll be over soon. Eevee, go!" Gary waved his hand, and Eevee decisively jumped into the arena.

"A Normal-type Eevee, huh? It seems your battle experience isn't very extensive." Brock chuckled easily.

"Is that so~ Then let's begin!" Gary smiled mysteriously.

His Eevee wasn't just any ordinary Eevee.

"Let me tell you the cruelty of a Gym battle, Onix, use Tackle!" Brock didn't hold back and immediately launched an attack.

"Gah!" The giant Onix suddenly swooped down, its millstone-sized head charging straight at Eevee's small body.

"Quick Attack." Gary snapped his fingers.

"Eevee!" Eevee moved with incredible speed, leaving a white streak of lightning as it easily dodged Onix's attack.

"A huge body doesn't just mean great strength; it also takes away most of its agility," Gary said calmly.

Although there are Trainers who train Onix for agility, Onix's physical build means it can't dodge and weave. If it misses an attack, it's bound to take a hit!

"Eevee, Bullet Seed!" Gary wasn't one to suffer a disadvantage; he immediately countered with a Bullet Seed.

Eevee positioned itself behind Onix, opened its small mouth, and fired a volley of green seeds at the back of Onix's head.

Bang, bang, bang! Even a rock head must hurt with that sound!

"This is, a Grass-type move?" Brock's mind went blank: "Can Eevee learn this move?"

Seeing Brock stunned, Gary was equally ruthless: "Eevee, Sand Attack!"

Eevee turned its body and kicked with its hind leg!

Slam, a cloud of sand directly hit Onix's face… How to put it, it wasn't very damaging, but it was extremely humiliating…

"Darn it, Onix, use Dig!" Brock's battle awareness was still very sharp; if a frontal confrontation was unfavorable, then he would try to flank.

Ambushing the opponent by digging underground was not a bad idea.

But… Gary grinned: "You asked for this, Eevee, aim at the hole, use Water Gun!"

Boom! A powerful jet of water rushed into the hole, and Brock's face twisted in anger.

"What is this?! Is this Eevee? You're cheating, aren't you? You must be cheating!"

Rumble~ No matter how surprised Brock was, Onix couldn't take it anymore. It burst out of the ground, spitting water as it did so…

"Thunderbolt…" Gary's motto was, hit them when they're down… Sizzle…

Golden electricity flashed, and Eevee's Thunder Shock enveloped the water-soaked Onix.

"Gah!!" Onix painfully straightened itself, then crashed to the ground…

"It looks like I won this round~" Gary spread his hands.

"Uh… you certainly won…"

Brock scratched his head: "This Eevee has something special about it…"

Gary smiled, gave Eevee a few words of encouragement, and then recalled his little darling.

"Charmander, it's your turn next."

Looking at Brock, Gary showed a friendly smile: "Well then, second half. Let's begin~"

Brock: (????)
