Chapter 59 - International Assassination

[3rd POV]

[This is 110, Police Emergency Line. State your emergency.] The operator said in a professional tone.

"My neighbour is a paedophile!!" the caller shouted in panic, a woman's voice from the sound, but she was screaming so loudly it was hard to tell.

[Madam, how do you know this?] The operator asked, a little more seriously this time.

"Everyone in the building has been saying it for years, but I didn't believe them. But just now, I saw him taking off the little girl's uniform after he brought her to his home!!"

"Please, send some help before he does something unimaginable to the girl. She looks so young!! Barely 8 years old!!" she said.

[Okay, calm down, madam. We will send out forces right away. What's your location?]

....

[This is 110, Police Emergency Line. State your emergency.] Another operator received an urgent call.

"I just saw a wanted criminal enter the subway!! He is wearing a loose coat I think he has weapons there. Maybe guns!!"

[How do you know the man is a wanted criminal? Can you describe him?]

"He looks like the one from the news!! The serial killer that everyone has been talking about recently?" the caller, a man, said in fear.

[Sir, I do not recall such criminals on the loose]

"Oh no, he's staring at someone intently. I think he is trying to kill her!! Everyone is panicking! Send someone please!"

[Please calm down sir, what is the subway you're on right now?]

...

[This is 119, Fire and Ambulance, state your emergency]

"My husband poisoned our food!!"

[Ma'am, why do you think that?]

"I have been cheating on him!!! Two of our kids are not even his!! I think he figured out, and I'm afraid he is planning on doing something crazy!!"

[Please, someone, help us. At least save the children.]

[What's your address, ma'am]

...

[This is 110, Police Emergency Line. State your emergency.]

"There's a terrorist in my classroom!!" a teenage boy cried.

[A terrorist?]

"Yes!!! Everyone's been saying so! He always carry a bag with him and we think he is carrying a bomb with him!! We've heard explosions just now, I think those are his fellow terrorist attacking other places!!"

[Tell me the name of your school] the operator asked urgently.

...

...

[This is 666, Devil Emergency Line, what's your emergency?]

"THE NEIGHBOURS ARE INFECTED!!" someone sobbed.

[What do you mean?]

"The neighbours had turned into devils!! My brother and I are hiding in the closet. I think they are coming for us!!"

[What's your location?]

...

[This is line 666, State Emergency]

"A Devil appeared just now and is killing everyone!!"

[What's your location?]

"We're in the Nerima Ward. We went to my father's grave and Devil just appeared!! Now everyone around us is dead!!"

...

[This is line 666-]

"A devil is chasing after me!! It's trying to kill me and eat my flesh!!"

...

[This is the Devil emergency Line-]

"Send in Devil Hunters quickly!! I AM BEING ATTACKED!!"

...

[This is-]

"We need Devil Hunters!! There is a devil in the haunted house!!" the caller screamed hysterically.

...

//////////

The calls began on 12:34 pm.

By 12:49 pm, every emergency line was flooded with emergency calls. It was unlike anything Tokyo had ever seen.

By 1 pm, the Tokyo Emergency lines were choking with calls. The whole server was drowned in destruction.

With the recent attack and the chaos, forces were sent out immediately, especially when it came down to the Devil Emergency Line.

Public Safety Commission workers, Private Agencies, and Civilian Devil Hunters were all responding to the calls.

There was one thing, though.

Almost all of them were false alarms.

But what boggled everyone was that the calls were made by real people with real backgrounds and each individual or calls had no connection to each other.

The higher-ups realised it too late.

A distraction to spread their forces thin.

But for what?

They couldn't even question, as some reports happened to be real. They didn't have a way to verify if the calls were legit or not.

The forces that once protected Tokyo were in absolute chaos.

...

"That should do the trick," a woman said, speaking in Chinese while sipping coffee in a cafe.

She was surrounded by younger women around a table. But the unnerving thing was that all of them lay their head on the coffee table.

Five younger women seemed to be sleeping around the table. But if one were to check, they would realise all these young women were already dead without a pulse.

Sacrificed for a contract.

If someone from the Public Safety Commission were to look at this woman, they would identify her immediately as Lin Yaoyan.

A dangerous individual from China who had a contract with the Rumour Devil.

This proved that it wasn't just Quanxi, but whoever China sent to infiltrate Japan was awfully set on the goal of distraction.

But why?

[3rd POV]

Makima had a tight expression as she looked out from the window of her office.

Her coffee lay cold on her table.

Her eyes had an orange glow as she used her abilities to peer through the eyes of those she controlled. Be it Devil Hunters, birds, rats or even insects.

Anything she controlled, she could share their senses.

And in Japan, especially in Tokyo, most things were under her control.

Which is exactly why she did not like what was happening to her home.

Chaos.

Unimaginable chaos that she did not predict.

It was why she always hated the international threat. She had control over politicians, high officials here in Japan but outside that, her control ends.

As she stood there, she began analyzing all of the threats one by one.

Santa Claus. A person from Japan who had a contract with the Doll Devil was here. She could turn anyone she touches into a doll that would do her bidding. She was a tricky foe. She was also the one who sent Jin into Hell with her contract with the Hell Devil.

Quanxi, the first Devil Hunter and a powerful Hybrid from China, would give even Jin a run for his money.

Lin Yaoyan, also from China, had a contract with the Rumour Devil. She was the one responsible for stirring up the most chaos in her home.

There were three mercenaries from America who hid among the Devil Hunters. Makima wasn't sure who but she knew they were already among the Public Safety Commission.

An Ex-Devil Hunter from Russia was also in the Minato ward but hadn't made a move yet. She knew about his existence because of Reze.

And Makima was sure that there were many more that hadn't made their move.

The assassination this time was on a whole other level compared to the canon when countries tried to kill Denji, Chainsawman.

Perhaps it was the appropriate response since Jin in theory was much more threat than even Denji.

Makima hate to admit it but she wasn't ready for this. Everything happened a few steps too soon. The attacks should've taken a few more days at least.

But they strike right before reinforcement could come from the other regions. From an all knowing perspective, they moved at the right time. But that would mean someone was a step ahead of her.

But who?

"Miss Makima?"

The knock on the door of her office brought her out of her thoughts. She deactivated her powers, stopping the shine of her eyes.

"Come in Yuno," Makima said, already recognizing the person by scent.

Makima stared forward as the door opened. The scent was the exact same but something was different.

"Oh there you are," Yuno said.

No, not Yuno.

A puppet, a doll.

"The HQ is quite large, it's hard to tell," it said, snapping the neck eerily

"Santa Claus," Makima greeted it, or the person behind the human puppet, "You're early, Christmas is not here yet."

"It's Advanced Christmas!!" it said. "I brought gifts!!"

Makima stared with a stoic face as swarms of humans turned puppets began swarming the entrance of her office. Her eyes released a shine, before quickly stopping and she realized something.

The entire Public Safety Commission Headquarters were compromised.

She had lost control over them as they had turned into puppets.

"I see,"

Finally, Makima showed a small smile.

Although her situation was precarious, she felt the satisfaction of finally fitting the puzzle. Although she was still missing the final piece.

Jin Nakahara was taken out of the picture. The whole entire force of Tokyo was in disarray. Things that she would often used as her shield were peeled away.

Leaving only her.

"Are all the countries working together on this?" Makima asked.

"Are you surprised? You shouldn't be," it said, "Making yourself the common enemy was the best way to unite the countries,"

Makima chuckled.

This whole thing.

This whole assassination arc was not about killing Jin.

It was always about her.

Makima was the target, not the Pig Devil.

That was why she couldn't predict them.

But how? She made sure to make Jin the common enemy, the common threat to all the countries.

That was always her goal.

To turn everyone against him so that in the end, he would only have her to turn to. That was when she would have him.

So how did it come down to this.

What's the final puzzle?

VOOOOOSHH*

The sound of glass shattering filled the room and an arrow pierced through Makima's heart. She began bleeding from the mouth and nose instantly.

Makima grabbed the arrow head and looked at her hand that was stained with her own blood.

"Crossbow Devil," she muttered weakly.

The Crossbow Devil Hybrid, Quanxi.

But the last time Makima saw her, Reze the Bomb Devil was fighting against her.

Did the Bomb Devil lose? Makima had predicted clearly that Reze was stronger than Quanxi. She even offered Reze what she wanted so that she could use her strength.

Did that fail?

Makima leaned back, turning her weak body to stare at the broken window.

Now she had the whole puzzle figured out.

"It was you bitch," Makima said, gurgling blood.

It was always weird why the Russians were so lenient on Reze even though Makima had hinted at her betrayal. Initially, before the thought of using her crossed her mind, Makima wanted Reze gone from the picture.

When a dog barks annoyingly, you tell the owners to take care of their pet instead of just outright dealing with the dog yourself.

'When did I become so humane?' Makima couldn't but wonder.

A black blur descended, right on target this time.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!*

The whole office exploded.
