Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE:ADEIRA

The cool breeze caressed her smooth round face as she shivered a little from the cold. She sat on her favorite stone by the field. She looked up at the blue sky, it was as clear as ever. It brought back child hood memories and she smiled.

Her mother's voice brought her back to reality as she called her name. She knew she would be in trouble if she took a long time in the field. Her mother was waiting for her outside the house. She went straight to the kitchen to help her mother prepare breakfast.

As they sat down at the dining table to eat, she couldn't help but stare at her beautiful mother. The way she ate precisely and in small amounts. She loved the little smile she always had. It was like a veil. The most attractive one, she could only wish to have.

She had so many questions in her mind. She felt like asking but she was too afraid. She had to postpone her questions because she knew it would change the happy moment they were having. It was a lovely morning, she did not want to ruin it. She just continued gulping her food. She decided the first question she would ask is how did her mother come up with the name, Adeira.

She finished her breakfast and started the chores. Being a weekend, she washed the dishes as her mother cleaned the house. She was later sent to get groceries for dinner.

Adeira had just turned seventeen. She was in her final year in high school. She was so excited to do her final exams and join college. She wanted to be a nurse. It has always been her dream to help people in any way she could. She had to study daily to achieve her aspiration.

On her way back home she met her best friend Angel. They made stories and agreed to meet the next day for revision. She arrived home a bit late and panicked. Her mother was very strict about time. Luckily for her, she was in a happy mood and they prepared dinner as it was already dark.

As she slept that night, she could see the shadows again. Lurking in the deepest pit of the cold night. Then the memory of what haunted her the most about her childhood reoccurred. She screamed loud waking up her mother from her bedroom. She was already used to Adeira's screams at night. She hugged her tightly as they fell back into slumber.

Angel came the next day for revision but Adeira was in deep thoughts, she could not concentrate. On seeing her friend's mind state, Angel suggested they go for a walk on the green fields.

They had moved to this side of the country a few years back. Adeira's mother had suggested this was the best environment for them to move on. The past had affected them so much that they both needed a new environment. The house they bought was next to a large field. At this time of the year, it was always green. It gave them a sense of peace, away from the noisy and busy city.

It was Adeira's final exam day. She had waited so long for this moment. She took a bus to school and said a little prayer. The exam was so easy, she placed her pen down with a big smile on her face. She looked for her best friend Angel and she was excited too. High school was finally over. They only task that remained was researching for the best universities.

On arrival home, Adeira's mother had prepared her best meal. They talked and laughed the whole evening. Adeira' had just started a new phase in her life. Her mother was so happy for her, she knew her daughter will pass very highly and join the best university.

Their school had organized a prom for them that weekend. Adeira's mum bought her a beautiful prom dress for the event. It was a long emerald green dress. She wore it with matching earrings and necklace. She had a great time. They took pictures with her best friend as they were excited for this new chapter. Adeira came back home that evening feeling exhausted, it had been a long day. She fell into slumber and had a lot of plans for the next day.

Adeira woke up the next morning feeling re-energized. She was already done with her high school. She started applying for different universities to do her undergraduate. She wanted to do a course in medicine. She was always passionate about helping others.

In no time, her eighteenth birthday was near. She could not wait to finally enter adulthood. Her best friend Angel was so excited for her. She helped Adeira's mother plan a birthday surprise. She invited her high school friends and some neighbors.

The long awaited day had finally arrived. People arrived that evening in numbers. They had organized the party on the field next to their house. Adeira's mom had sent her to do errands in the city. She came back home to find a big surprise. She was speechless as she noticed the large crowd and loud music. She was overwhelmed with joy as everyone shouted happy birthday to her. Her emotions took a hold on her as tears filled her eyes.

Her mother made her evening. She hugged all her friends and her mom. They sang a birthday song for her as she danced to the tune. The meal and snacks were brought. Everyone took a bite and drank. The place was filled with music and laughter. They danced to the music throughout the evening.

It was a great party. They all ate and drank to their fill. Adeira was so happy as she started dancing to the music. She let herself go and felt ready to start the next phase of her life. They all made stories and laughed out as Angel made sure her best friend had a great time.

The guests started leaving one after the other. Adeira was sitting by herself as the clock hit midnight. A handsome young man came and sat beside her. He introduced himself as Rick as she shook her hand. Adeira looked at his well chiseled face through the night light. He had a wide smile that showcased his perfect teeth. He had a masculine body and about six feet tall in stature. He had a very pleasant cologne on that made her feel butterflies in her stomach. He was adorned in well fitting casual clothes which showed his entire body structure.

Rick told Adeira that he was a cousin to one of her neighbors, Nelson. He asked for her contact which she gave him without a second thought. They talked for a while before he finally left. All this time, Angel was busy eyeing them at a distance. She hurriedly went to sit next to Adeira after she saw the young man leave. She was so excited as they spent the rest of their night talking about how attractive he was. They cleaned up and continued with their banter in Adeira's room before they dozed off.
