A cold shiver ran through me as Eliza's demeanor shifted to saccharine sweetness without warning.
'What's gotten into her?' I wondered.
"Reed's been swamped handling Gould Group affairs lately," Eliza began. "Why don't you see about moving back home today? You're a wife and mother now—your family needs you.
"Home is where you belong. Let the men handle business matters.
Don't stress about your company anymore. Just let Reed step in and manage everything."
"Since Reed's already in the fireworks industry, your smaller operation would be child's play for him to oversee," she continued.
Her eyes sparkled with increasing intensity as she spoke, her grin growing more self-satisfied by the second. She behaved as though everything I owned was already Reed's property.
I picked up on the true intent behind her sugar-coated words and couldn't suppress a bitter laugh.
'Of course—she's eyeing my family's company, hoping Reed will sweep in and claim it,' I realized.
