Lilian's POV
Augusto let out a harsh laugh. "What exactly are you hiding in there that I can't see?"
"Nothing special. Just some work files from the office," I replied, trying to sound casual.
His eyes narrowed with obvious skepticism. "Your office? You've been there exactly one day and you're already acting like you own the place?"
I swallowed hard, feeling my cheeks flush. "What's wrong with that? From the moment I walked through those doors, I decided to give everything I had. That's how I was raised."
"How admirable," he drawled, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "They really struck gold when they hired someone with your dedication."
Heat flared in my chest at his mocking tone. I needed to change the subject before I said something I'd regret. "I'm starving. Did you cook anything?"
I started toward the dining room, but Augusto moved faster than lightning. His arms swept under me, lifting me clean off my feet before I could protest.
