Chapter 16 - EPISODE 16: NEXT MORNING

MAPLE VALLEY — MORNING

The morning after the Autumn Festival arrived quietly.

Maple Valley looked almost ordinary again.

Almost.

The golden lights that had transformed the streets the previous evening were still hanging between the maple trees. A few lanterns remained suspended above the sidewalks, swaying gently in the morning breeze.

Festival banners fluttered lazily from the lampposts.

Workers were already dismantling temporary stalls around Westridge University.

The city was returning to its normal rhythm.

Cars moved through Maple Avenue.

Cafés opened their doors.

Students hurried toward campus with backpacks over their shoulders and coffee cups in their hands.

The magic of the festival was disappearing.

But for some people...

The night hadn't really ended.

---

INT. WESTRIDGE UNIVERSITY — GIRLS' DORM

Sunlight slipped through the curtains.

Lisa Walker slowly opened her eyes.

For several seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling.

Her room was quiet.

Her phone rested beside her pillow.

Her jacket from last night's festival hung over the back of a chair.

A small maple leaf was still caught inside one of the pockets.

Lisa sat up.

She rubbed her eyes.

Then—

Her thoughts returned to the previous night.

The dance.

Ethan.

The lanterns.

The quiet pathway.

The bell tower.

Austin.

Lisa's expression softened.

She remembered the way the city had looked from the hilltop.

The fireworks.

The silence.

And that tiny smile.

Austin had smiled.

Actually smiled.

Lisa had spent weeks teasing him about never smiling.

And when it finally happened...

She hadn't said anything.

For some reason, she was glad she hadn't.

She reached for her phone and checked the time.

"Great."

She had twenty-five minutes before class.

Lisa jumped out of bed.

---

SOPHIE'S SIDE OF THE ROOM

Sophie was already awake.

She sat on her bed, scrolling through photographs from the festival.

Without looking up, she said,

"You followed him."

Lisa froze halfway through putting on her jacket.

"...Good morning to you too."

Sophie finally looked up.

"Good morning."

A pause.

"Now answer."

Lisa tried to look innocent.

"Followed who?"

Sophie stared at her.

"Lisa."

"What?"

"Don't."

Lisa smiled.

"I went for a walk."

"With Austin."

"Technically, yes."

Sophie immediately sat straighter.

"Technically?"

Lisa laughed.

"Okay. Yes. I followed Austin."

Sophie slowly smiled.

"I knew it."

"There's nothing to know."

"You disappeared from the biggest event of the year to follow the quietest person on campus to a bell tower."

Lisa grabbed her bag.

"It wasn't like that."

"Then what was it like?"

Lisa paused.

She thought about the conversation.

"He just..."

She struggled to find the right words.

"...talked."

Sophie blinked.

"Austin?"

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Quite a while."

Sophie stared at her.

Then laughed.

"Okay. That's significant."

Lisa shook her head.

"It wasn't romantic."

"I didn't say it was."

"You were thinking it."

"I was absolutely thinking it."

Lisa threw a pillow at her.

Sophie caught it.

"You're smiling."

Lisa immediately stopped.

"I'm not."

"You are."

"No."

"Lisa."

She sighed.

"Fine. Maybe a little."

Sophie smiled knowingly.

She didn't push further.

Not yet.

---

INT. WESTRIDGE UNIVERSITY — BOYS' DORM

Across campus...

Austin's morning was considerably quieter.

He stood in front of his mirror, buttoning the cuffs of a plain dark shirt.

His room looked exactly as it usually did.

Clean.

Organized.

Minimal.

His books were stacked neatly on the desk.

His finance notes were arranged in a precise pile.

His headphones rested beside his laptop.

Everything was in its place.

Except Austin's thoughts.

He looked at himself in the mirror.

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then his mind returned to last night.

Lisa's voice.

Her laugh.

The bell tower.

Her words.

> "Silence depends on who you're sharing it with."

Austin looked away from his reflection.

He picked up his watch.

Put it on.

Then stopped.

A tiny smile appeared before disappearing again.

He noticed it.

Immediately.

"...What am I doing?"

---

The bathroom door opened.

Kevin walked out, drying his hair with a towel.

He stopped when he saw Austin standing silently near the mirror.

"You're smiling."

Austin looked at him.

"No."

Kevin stared.

"You definitely were."

"I wasn't."

"I've known you for years."

Austin picked up his backpack.

"You imagined it."

Kevin narrowed his eyes.

"Something happened."

"Nothing happened."

"That's exactly what someone says when something happened."

Austin walked toward the door.

Kevin followed.

"You went to the festival."

"Yes."

"You came back late."

"Yes."

"You were with people."

"Obviously."

Kevin stopped.

"...You talked to someone."

Austin opened the door.

"Goodbye, Kevin."

Kevin grinned.

"Oh, definitely."

---

WESTRIDGE UNIVERSITY — MORNING

By the time Lisa reached campus, Westridge had already returned to its weekday rhythm.

Students rushed between buildings.

Some still looked exhausted from the festival.

Others were already discussing photographs from the previous night.

Lisa walked beside Sophie toward the main academic building.

She felt strangely lighter.

Not dramatically.

Just...

Different.

She couldn't explain it.

Maybe it was because she was finally beginning to feel like she belonged here.

Maybe it was because last night had been beautiful.

Maybe it was because Austin had talked to her.

She didn't know.

And she wasn't going to overthink it.

At least...

She told herself that.

---

THE CAFETERIA

Before class, Lisa and Sophie stopped for breakfast.

Kevin was already there.

Of course.

He sat at a table with a plate containing far more food than one person needed.

Sophie stared at it.

"Do you actually eat all of that?"

Kevin looked offended.

"Breakfast is important."

"You have four sandwiches."

"Growth requires fuel."

Lisa laughed.

"You're ridiculous."

Kevin pointed toward her.

"And you're late."

"I came early."

"You came after me."

"That's not the same thing."

Kevin looked toward Sophie.

"She's arguing semantics."

Sophie smiled.

"You're arguing with Lisa. That's your first mistake."

Kevin sighed.

"I miss when you two were strangers."

---

Austin arrived a few minutes later.

He carried a cup of tea and a book.

Nothing unusual.

He looked around.

Then noticed the table.

Kevin raised his hand.

"Here."

Austin walked over.

He sat beside Kevin.

Lisa glanced at him.

Their eyes met.

For one second—

Neither said anything.

Then Lisa smiled.

Small.

Natural.

Austin looked at her.

And...

He smiled back.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Lisa's eyebrows lifted.

Sophie noticed.

Kevin didn't.

Kevin was busy stealing one of Sophie's fries.

"Hey!"

"What?"

"That's mine."

"I thought friendship meant sharing."

"It means asking."

Kevin smiled.

"May I?"

"No."

He ate another fry.

Sophie stared at him.

"You are impossible."

---

Lisa looked back at Austin.

"You slept?"

Austin took a sip of tea.

"Enough."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

"You always answer like that?"

"Usually."

Lisa smiled.

"You're getting better."

Austin looked at her.

"At what?"

"Talking."

A pause.

"Maybe."

That answer made her smile again.

There was no awkwardness.

No tension.

Just...

Familiarity.

Something had changed.

Neither of them said it.

---

THE WALK TO CLASS

The group eventually left the cafeteria.

Kevin and Sophie walked ahead, arguing about something insignificant.

Ethan was nowhere in sight.

Lisa and Austin naturally ended up walking several steps behind them.

Lisa looked at him.

"So..."

Austin glanced over.

"So?"

"Last night."

He knew immediately what she meant.

"What about it?"

"You smiled."

Austin sighed.

"I knew you'd mention that."

"I told you I'd count it."

"You remember everything."

"Only important things."

Austin looked at her.

That sentence lingered between them.

Lisa didn't realize what she had just said.

Austin did.

Before either could respond—

A voice came from ahead.

"Are you two coming?"

Kevin.

Lisa smiled.

"Coming!"

She walked faster.

Austin followed.

For the first time...

He didn't feel the need to walk behind everyone.

---

ETHAN

At the entrance of the academic building, Ethan stood talking to another student.

He noticed Lisa approaching.

His expression immediately brightened.

"Morning."

Lisa smiled.

"Morning."

Ethan looked at her.

"You survive last night?"

"Somehow."

"Good."

He glanced toward Austin.

Then back toward Lisa.

Nothing suspicious.

Nothing dramatic.

Just a moment of observation.

"You guys heading to class?"

Lisa nodded.

"Yeah."

Ethan smiled.

"See you inside."

As he walked away, Lisa followed Sophie toward the classroom.

Austin remained quiet.

Ethan never spoke to him.

Austin never spoke to Ethan.

Neither liked the other.

But neither showed it.

Not yet.

---

INT. CLASSROOM

Students gradually filled their seats.

Lisa sat beside Sophie.

Kevin settled into his usual place.

Austin took his normal seat slightly away from the center.

Ethan sat toward the back.

The professor entered.

Everyone quieted.

The lecture began.

For Lisa...

It was an ordinary class.

But every now and then—

Her eyes drifted toward Austin.

And every time she did...

She found herself smiling.

Not because something romantic had happened.

Not because she had fallen in love.

Simply because...

She had discovered something about him.

There was more to Austin Carter than silence.

Much more.

---

LATER

During a short break, Lisa stepped into the hallway.

Austin was already there, standing near a window.

She approached.

"You know..."

He looked at her.

"You don't seem as scary anymore."

Austin raised an eyebrow.

"I was scary?"

"At first."

"What changed?"

Lisa smiled.

"You talked."

He looked toward the window.

"That was a mistake."

She laughed.

"No."

A pause.

"It wasn't."

Austin looked back at her.

For a moment—

Neither spoke.

Then the bell rang.

Lisa stepped backward.

"See you."

Austin nodded.

"See you."

She walked away.

Austin watched her disappear around the corner.

Then quietly—

He smiled.

This time...

He didn't notice himself doing it.

---

FINAL SCENE

That evening, Maple Valley slowly slipped into another autumn sunset.

The festival decorations were being removed from the university.

The lanterns were coming down.

The temporary stages were disappearing.

Within a few days...

It would look as though the festival had never happened.

But some memories didn't disappear with the decorations.

Lisa sat at her dorm desk that night, writing in her journal.

She paused.

Then wrote:

> "Maybe some people aren't quiet because they have nothing to say."

She stared at the sentence.

Then added:

> "Maybe they just need someone worth talking to."

She closed the journal.

Across campus...

Austin sat beside his bedroom window.

His textbook remained open.

But he wasn't reading.

He looked out toward the distant lights of Maple Valley.

And somewhere in that quiet city...

He knew something had changed.

Not enough to name.

Not enough to understand.

But enough to make tomorrow feel different.

And for the first time in a long time—

Austin wasn't afraid of what tomorrow might bring.
