Azeroth.
In the long-lost Golden Age of Mankind—now remembered as the Dark Age of Technology—this world stood as one of the principal worlds of the Human Federation.
It was an oasis of research, technology, and culture, where humans and other species lived not only in peace, but also contributed to the advancement and enrichment of knowledge and civilization.
Sadly, it was not to last.
In M25, the Men of Iron rebellion began, and in the chaos that followed, humanity's great interstellar empire was shattered and broken apart.
Death and destruction reached such unimaginable levels that, were the true scale ever known, it would horrify even the most hardened souls.
As if that were not enough, shortly after the rebellion ended—just as humanity began to regain its footing and rebuild—warp storms of unprecedented frequency erupted across the Milky Way, baffling even the ancient and wise Men of Gold.
These storms severed the vast majority of human worlds from one another, cutting off communication and faster-than-light travel, effectively isolating the species after it had just endured its most devastating war.
Yet humanity's misfortune did not end there.
Many alien races—once allies—turned upon them, whether out of desperation, greed, or arrogance.
Humans were slaughtered in droves, enslaved, or stripped of their resources, further eroding what remained of their strength and dignity.
On countless other worlds, a new crisis emerged: the rise of a mutant human strain known as psykers.
Many, unable to control their powers, fell prey to the malicious entities lurking beyond the veil of reality.
Tempted by these beings, they came to worship them as gods. These misguided individuals spread their corruption to others, until the infection festered and grew—tearing open the barrier between realities and allowing their so called "masters" to enter.
By then, it was far too late for them to realize they had doomed both themselves and their worlds.
Others became living gateways, their uncontrolled powers ripping reality apart.
In their deaths, they opened paths for those same malevolent entities, plunging entire planets into chaos and ruin.
And so it continued for several millennia.
The once-mighty interstellar empire of humanity became a mere shadow of its former self—if it could even be called that.
Only a few would even remember or even know that once such a golden era had ever existed for humanity.
Azeroth was one such world.
Compared to many others, it might be said that it fared better—though it too bore its scars.
Much of its ancient past had been lost after it was cut off from the wider human race.
Yet even now, Azeroth retained the natural beauty for which it had once been renowned.
At some point in its long isolation, humanity established kingdoms upon its largest continent called Arda which housed the entirety of the human settled kingdoms also known as the Eastern Kingdoms.
But humans were not alone.
There was the dwarven kingdom of Khaz Modan, also known as Ironforge, and the realm of the high elves, Quel'Thalas.
Orkish hordes dwelled within the Blasted Lands, while the secretive night elves inhabited a smaller continent to the west, near the mysterious Mount Hyjal which they called Kalimdor.
They preferred isolation, even more so than their high elf kin, and rarely interacted with the wider world.
Over time, these races learned to coexist—sometimes in harmony, sometimes in tension—each preserving its own culture, history, and way of life.
Much of the technology from humanity's golden age had been lost. Some devices remained, but their methods of creation were forgotten, requiring rediscovery through effort and time.
Even so, Azeroth endured in far better condition than many other worlds.
What knowledge its inhabitants retained—or rediscovered—allowed them to live in relative comfort, sustain themselves through trade and self-sufficiency, and arm their forces more effectively than most worlds during the Age of Strife.
It was upon this world that a "shooting star"—in truth, a gestation pod—tore through the veil of reality and descended toward the planet.

King Llane Wrynn I of Stormwind stood within his solar, having just finished the day's work.
Rising from his desk, he stepped onto the balcony.
He exhaled softly, a faint smile forming as he gazed upon the beauty of Stormwind City, the star-filled sky above, and Azeroth's twin moons—the larger white moon known as the White Lady, and the smaller blue-green moon called the Blue Child.
Then his expression changed.
A streak of light caught his eye—a shooting star in the distance. At first, he thought little of it, but as it grew larger and closer, his eyes widened in alarm.
He watched as it crashed into the distant Elwynn Forest, the impact echoing faintly even from afar.
Snapping out of his shock, Llane rushed to the side of the room where his armor stood within a stand. He began donning it just as the door to his solar opened.
Entering was his old friend who was also the commander of his honor guard, Anduin Lothar, already clad in his own armor.
"Llane, I'm guessing you saw it too?"
"If you mean the meteorite that landed in Elwynn Forest—then yes, Anduin, I did. I assume you've already prepared a contingent for departure?"
"Of course. They're waiting for us outside. Best we be quick to leave and see whatever this was."
"Then let's not waste time."
The king and his champion departed at once, unaware that on this day, their future—the future of Azeroth, and indeed the galaxy itself—would change in ways not even the greatest and wisest beings could have foreseen.
