While Characteristics are unique to the individual, Techniques can be used by anyone who tries to learn them, however learning a certain technique makes it harder to learn its Antithesis.
For example, Being skilled in Navigation techniques means being less skilled in Hunger techniques and vice versa. There is a reason for this, but it will be explored in the book.
There are 7 technique disciplines;
Navigation techniques: These techniques are mainly used to facilitate and improve movement across significant distances.
Stealth techniques: These techniques are mainly used to hide either all or certain aspects of oneself from being seen, sensed or located either by regular or supernatural means.
Insight techniques: These can also be referred to as Instinct, and Intuition techniques and grant the ability to arrive at an answer with less and less amounts of given information.
Exorcism techniques: These techniques are mainly used to bolster the user's natural healing capabilities.
Hunger techniques: These techniques are mainly used to manipulate Intent of oneself and others in all way, shapes and forms.
Resistance techniques: These techniques mainly give the user an increased resistance to the manipulation or application of certain things.

The abilities one can mainly use are not their limit and as such those at a point of mastery can create a new use of a certain technique or achieve something more from utilizing two or more disciplines together.
Also as said above, learning certain techniques makes it harder to learn another.
Navigation = Hunger
Stealth = Exorcism
Insight = Resistance
And in certain situations it is impossible for the user to learn another, such as possessing a certain "Accolade".
