Chapter 86 - Chapter 84 – Tracking the Firestorm

The morning air on Cinnabar carried an unusual stillness, heavy with the residue of yesterday's battle. Alex adjusted his jacket and scanned the horizon, Infernape already pacing beside him with measured readiness. The volcanic cliffs had quieted, but the faint tremor beneath the island reminded him that the threat was far from over.

"Any signs of movement?" Alex asked, his voice low and precise. Giovanni, leaning against a jagged rock with Persian by his side, responded without hesitation.

"They've retreated temporarily, but not far," Giovanni said, eyes narrowing. "Magma's amplifiers were just one part of their plan. There's a network beneath Cinnabar, and likely, one or two nodes already active closer to the volcano's peak."

Kai and Lila stood nearby, Pokémon by their sides, anticipation written across their faces. Talonflame circled above, Luxray's fur sparkled faintly with static, Gardevoir hovered patiently, and Arcanine pawed the ground, restless.

Alex turned to them. "Today isn't just training. We're going to track them before they can trigger anything bigger. Watch each other's backs. Remember your Pokémon are partners, not weapons—you move together, you coordinate, you anticipate."

Lila's voice was steady. "Understood. Gardevoir and I are ready."

Kai grinned. "And Luxray and Talonflame are all set. Let's find them."

The team moved quickly, weaving through the rebuilt streets and up the slopes toward the volcanic cliffs. Alex led, Infernape bounding ahead, flames flickering as a beacon. Giovanni stayed slightly back, Rhydon and Persian poised for any sudden confrontation.

The first node they approached was smaller than yesterday's, buried beneath hardened lava and partially obscured by rocky debris. Sparks of unnatural energy pulsed faintly, detectable only to Pokémon attuned to elemental flows.

"Here," Alex said, kneeling beside the node. "They're siphoning heat and geothermal energy directly. If left unchecked, the volcano could react violently."

Infernape crouched, scanning the node. Alex signaled, and Typhlosion H exhaled a controlled burst of steam, while Ceruledge slashed precisely at surrounding debris, giving Infernape space to disable the node. Sparks erupted, but the combined timing of their Pokémon prevented any real damage to the slope.

Kai and Lila moved seamlessly alongside him. Luxray sent an electric surge into the device, while Gardevoir stabilized nearby rocks with psychic force. Arcanine leapt, knocking the final structural support out of the node, leaving it harmless and inactive.

Giovanni's voice cut through the tension, calm yet firm. "Well-coordinated. You've trained them well, Alex. I see now why the Gym is more than a showpiece."

Alex nodded, but didn't let pride distract him. "Thanks. But don't relax. Magma isn't here to test us—they're building a network. If we find one, there are likely others."

They pressed forward, ascending toward the higher cliffs. The closer they got to the volcanic peak, the more irregular the ground became. Cracks in the rock emitted faint steam, and the tremor beneath their feet grew stronger. Talonflame hovered low, scanning for movement, while Luxray's fur bristled at every minor vibration.

Kai pointed toward a thin wisp of smoke curling above a narrow ledge. "There—nodes, and… people."

Alex's jaw tightened. He released Hydreigon, letting the three-headed dragon circle high, scanning for Magma operatives hidden among the cliffs. Ceruledge moved into position, ready to intercept anyone attempting to reinforce the devices.

The first wave of Magma operatives emerged, Camerupts and Torkoals in tow, each Pokémon attuned to their master's commands. Infernape surged forward, flames spiraling, cutting through the formation with calculated precision. Garchomp charged alongside, using claws to dismantle improvised platforms built around the nodes.

Lila and Kai flanked strategically. Gardevoir lifted Magma operatives from the ground, Luxray sent coordinated lightning strikes to disarm devices, and Arcanine's powerful leaps disrupted enemy formations.

Giovanni, surprisingly in sync with the group, used Persian's agility and Rhydon's strength to control the cliffs' unstable terrain, preventing Magma from retreating or regrouping effectively.

Even as the battle raged, Alex's attention remained split between combat and strategy. He detected faint energy traces farther up the peak—more nodes, larger, more dangerous. "This isn't just about Cinnabar anymore," he muttered. "They're gearing for something major."

As the battle climaxed, the first major node of the day fell. Sparks and rock fragments flew, but no Pokémon were harmed. Infernape panted, flames curling in satisfaction, while Typhlosion H's heat radiated reassurance. Ceruledge flexed, Hydreigon circled high, and Garchomp's claws left deep gouges in the cliffside, marking the end of the skirmish.

Alex exhaled, surveying the aftermath. The siblings' Pokémon were tired but unharmed, each demonstrating improved coordination and tactical thinking. Giovanni's gaze remained sharp, calculating the next move.

"This is just the beginning," Alex said quietly, meeting Giovanni's eyes. "We've delayed them, but Magma will respond. They'll escalate."

Giovanni nodded. "Then we escalate in return. Timing, positioning, and insight will be our advantage—if we use it correctly."

Lila's voice was quiet but resolute. "We'll be ready. We have to be."

Kai clenched his fists, gaze fixed on the distant volcanic peak. "And we will be. Whatever it takes."

Alex allowed himself a brief moment of pride, looking at his siblings and the Pokémon by their sides. Together, they had slowed the enemy, protected their home, and maintained control of the battlefield. But deep inside, he knew the coming days would test every skill, every decision, and every bond they had forged.
