Chapter 85 - Chapter 83 – The Whispering Cliffs

The cliffs above Cinnabar seemed to hum with secrets that morning. Alex could feel it the instant he stepped onto the rocky outcrop, the wind carrying faint tremors and a subtle scent of ozone from Luxray's tail. The Gym below was a small hive of cautious activity, townspeople keeping their routines but with a quiet edge of unease. Infernape's flames flickered as he sniffed the air, chest rising and falling with a measured rhythm.

"Something's… off," Alex muttered, eyes narrowing. "These vibrations aren't natural."

Kai, perched on a boulder with Talonflame circling overhead, tilted his head. "Is it from the volcano again?"

"Partly," Alex said, scanning the horizon. "But not just that. Whoever's behind the smoke yesterday left a trace. The way the energy moves—it's controlled, precise."

Lila joined them, Gardevoir hovering beside her. "Controlled? You mean someone's doing this on purpose?"

Alex nodded, crouching to touch the warm stone. "Exactly. And if they're manipulating the volcano like that… we can't wait for them to escalate."

He released Infernape with a quick flick of his Pokéball, flames bursting around the Fire Pokémon. "We'll investigate the cliffside nodes. Luxray, Roserade, Gardevoir, stay close. Talonflame, Arcanine, you'll support aerial and ground coverage. Let's move."

The group ascended the rocky path, wind tugging at their hair and Pokémon alike. The faint hum grew louder as they climbed, almost like whispers carried through the rock. Alex could feel the tension coil in his stomach—not from fear, but anticipation. Every sense sharpened, every muscle ready.

At the first plateau, signs of Magma activity were clear: half-buried devices pulsed faint red and orange, synchronized with geothermal tremors beneath their feet. Camerupts lounged near the equipment, eyes glowing. Alex signaled with a subtle nod, and Infernape sprang forward, flames spiraling, engaging a Camerupt that had begun to advance.

Kai directed Talonflame in a sweeping arc, forcing another Camerupt back, while Luxray shot a precise jolt to disable one of the smaller amplifiers. Lila's Gardevoir lifted a node from the ground with psychic force, spinning it high enough to prevent the device from reacting further.

The siblings worked with precision, but Alex's focus never wavered. He could feel the layout of the amplifiers, the way energy bled across the stone, and the subtle signature of whoever had built them. "They're here for something bigger," he said under his breath. "This isn't random sabotage."

Their movements were interrupted by a sudden whistle of air—sharper than any wind. From behind a jagged ridge emerged a figure Alex hadn't expected to see: Giovanni, stepping carefully onto the plateau, his usual stoic expression softened in the rare sunlight. Behind him, his Persian prowled, eyes glinting with caution.

"Alex," Giovanni said quietly, his voice steady. "I've been tracking Magma's movements for some time. You were right—they're moving faster than anticipated. I can help."

Alex raised an eyebrow, cautious but intrigued. "Help? I'm curious, Giovanni, why the sudden change of heart?"

Giovanni's gaze flicked toward the pulsating amplifiers. "Let's just say I'm no fan of uncontrollable disasters. If Groudon awakens here… it's bad for everyone. For once, self-preservation aligns with the right cause."

Alex's mind raced. Having Giovanni as a reluctant ally could provide critical insight—his knowledge of underworld operations, Magma's methods, and elite Pokémon strength could tip the scales. But trust had to be earned, and Alex's instincts told him to tread carefully.

"Fine," Alex said finally. "You help us disable the nodes, but no unilateral decisions. One wrong move, and you're out."

Giovanni's slight nod was almost imperceptible. "Understood."

The team advanced cautiously, Magma's Pokémon aware but not expecting the coordinated assault that followed. Infernape launched into a spinning Flame Wheel, Ceruledge slashed across the rocky terrain, Hydreigon shadowed multiple targets, and Heatran's molten body created a defensive barrier. Giovanni released Rhydon and Persian to flank and intercept Magma's elite operatives.

Kai and Lila synchronized their attacks, combining Gardevoir's psychic pushes with Talonflame and Arcanine's aerial and ground strikes, while Luxray and Roserade disabled smaller amplifiers along the cliff face. Each move showcased their growth, coordination, and battle-readiness.

At the center of the plateau, Alex identified the primary amplifier, its red glow pulsing unnaturally. "That's the main node. Take it down, but be careful—the feedback could destabilize the surrounding rocks."

Giovanni's Rhydon surged forward, spinning the device with brute force, while Alex and Infernape leapt simultaneously, Infernape's flames igniting a controlled detonation that shattered the node without damaging the cliff. Sparks flew, smoke curled, and Magma operatives were thrown into disarray.

Lila's Gardevoir lifted one final amplifier from the ground, holding it with a graceful psychic pulse until it shattered under Luxray's electrified attack. The subtle hum beneath the ground diminished, leaving only the gentle pulse of natural geothermal activity.

As the dust settled, Alex glanced at his siblings and Giovanni. "This was just reconnaissance," he said firmly. "Magma won't stop. If anything, they'll accelerate their plans now that they've been noticed."

Giovanni's expression remained unreadable. "Then we prepare for the next stage. Together, if you allow it."

Alex exhaled, meeting the older man's gaze. "We'll see. For now, let's get back to the Gym. Pokémon need rest, and I want reports on any other anomalies in the region."

The climb back to Cinnabar was quieter, the siblings reflecting on their first real encounter with Magma on the island. Infernape ran alongside Alex, flames dancing lightly in the evening sun, while Talonflame swooped overhead, Luxray and Roserade staying alert. Giovanni moved with measured grace, his Persian ever at his side, a silent reminder that even old foes could be part of something new.
