Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: MUSCLE MEMORY BETRAYAL

Chapter 47: MUSCLE MEMORY BETRAYAL

POV: Ivyn Mikaelson

[June 10, 2018 — LaRusso Residence Backyard — 9:45 AM]

Daniel's eyes held the weight of thirty years of grudges. He stood at the edge of the grass, arms crossed, waiting for me to damn myself.

"Show me what you've been teaching her."

Sam shot me a look that said please don't make this worse. I gave her one back that said no promises.

"Basic self-defense," I said, moving to the center of the lawn. "Nothing fancy."

I started with a simple jab. Extension, retraction, guard position. Textbook.

Then my body betrayed me.

The jab flowed into a cross. The cross spiraled into a spinning back fist—the same technique Johnny had drilled into us for three months. My heel pivoted, my arm whipped around, and before I could stop myself, I was chambering a hook kick that would've taken someone's head off.

I caught myself mid-spin. Stood there like an idiot with one leg raised.

"Oh no."

Daniel's expression had gone from suspicious to certain.

"That's Cobra Kai."

"Is it?" My brain scrambled for excuses. "I learned it from YouTube."

The worst lie in the history of lies. Sam covered her face with both hands. Amanda, watching through the kitchen window, visibly winced.

"YouTube," Daniel repeated flatly. "You learned a perfect spinning back fist-to-hook kick combination from YouTube."

"There are very good tutorials."

"That's a tournament combination. I watched Johnny Lawrence use it to break three ribs at the 1984 All Valley."

"Of course he remembers. Of course the one technique my muscle memory decides to showcase is the one Daniel has nightmares about."

[DECEPTION CHECK: Critical Failure]

[Relationship Status: Deteriorating]

"Where do you really train?" Daniel stepped closer, each word a hammer blow. "And don't lie to me. Not in my home. Not when you're teaching my daughter."

I ran calculations faster than I'd ever run them before. Denial was pointless. Partial truth was dangerous. Full truth was—

Actually, maybe full truth was the only move left.

"Cobra Kai," I said. "I've been training there since September."

Sam's head snapped up.

"What?"

"I enrolled after the dojo reopened. Johnny Lawrence is my sensei."

Daniel's jaw worked like he was chewing glass. Sam looked between us, processing betrayal.

"You told me you trained at an independent gym!"

"I train at multiple places. Cobra Kai is one of them."

"The gym you said was teaching you self-defense is COBRA KAI?"

"In my defense, they do teach self-defense. Aggressively."

Daniel's voice dropped to something cold and controlled.

"Get out of my house."

"Dad—" Sam started.

"Now."

I grabbed my bag. Headed for the sliding glass door. Sam intercepted me at the threshold.

"Dad, stop!"

"Samantha, move."

"No!" She planted herself between us, and I saw something shift in her—the training paying off, her body settling into a stance without conscious thought. "He's been helping me. Actually helping me. Not the forms and philosophy you've been offering for years. Real skills."

"Cobra Kai destroys people. I've seen it happen. I've LIVED it."

"Look at him!" Sam gestured at me—bruised face, split knuckles, the whole disaster. "He literally lets people hit him so he can improve. That's not destruction, that's dedication!"

It was possibly the strangest defense anyone had ever mounted on my behalf. I couldn't argue with her logic, mostly because I wasn't sure there was logic to argue with.

Amanda's voice floated from the kitchen doorway. "Daniel, remember your teenage decisions?"

Daniel turned slowly. "What?"

"The illegal apartment. The tournament you entered against your mother's wishes. Dating the cheerleader your nemesis was obsessed with. You were the absolute definition of 'makes bad choices for reasons that seem good.'"

"This is different."

"Is it? Or is he just the new version of every teenager who thinks they know better?"

The low blow landed. Daniel deflated slightly, the rigid anger softening into something more like frustration.

"Fine." He pointed at me. "You can stay. But I'm watching everything you do. Everything you teach her. One wrong move—"

"You'll throw me out dramatically. Got it."

"Don't push it."

Sam walked me to the front door. The hallway felt longer than before, each step carrying the weight of revealed secrets.

"Why didn't you tell me about Cobra Kai?" she asked quietly. "The actual enrollment. The official membership."

"You said it was evil."

"It IS evil."

"Then why am I so much fun?"

She couldn't argue with that. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again.

"You're impossible."

"But you love me anyway."

"I'm seriously reconsidering that."

I kissed her forehead. She didn't pull away, which I counted as a win.

"I'll fix this," I said. "I'll show your dad that Cobra Kai can produce good people. That the philosophy can evolve."

"And if it can't?"

"Then I'll evolve it myself."

The confidence in my voice surprised even me. Maybe the training was working on more than just my body.

The walk home took forty minutes. I could've called a ride, but I needed the time to think. The sun beat down on my still-healing face, and my ribs ached with each breath.

My phone exploded halfway through Reseda.

Johnny: "LaRusso just called. You're dating his daughter?!"

Johnny: "His DAUGHTER?"

Johnny: "Answer your phone!"

Miguel: "Dude. Sensei is FREAKING OUT."

Tory: "Heard you're dating karate royalty. Interesting choice."

Hawk: "LEGENDARY."

I stared at the screen. Daniel had called Johnny. Of course he had. The two men who hated each other most in the Valley, united by their shared horror at my romantic choices.

Ivyn: "I can explain."

Johnny: "Monday. Dojo. 5 PM. Don't be late."

The walk home suddenly felt a lot longer.
