CHAPTER 26: THE KREESE GAMBIT
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
Kreese's strategy reveals itself with brutal clarity during evening class.
He's not trying to take the dojo by force. He's engineering Johnny's voluntary surrender through systematic destruction of confidence and support.
"Johnny, we need to talk. Business matters."
They disappear into the office. Voices muffled through thin walls.
Ten minutes later, Johnny emerges. Face pale. Kreese behind him. Satisfied smile.
After class, Johnny pulls Miguel and me aside.
"Kreese has been paying the dojo's back rent. Three months' worth. Hundreds of dollars I couldn't afford after enrollment dropped."
The trap springs shut. Visible in Johnny's defeated posture.
"He's not asking for repayment. Just recognition that we're partners now. Co-owners. Fifty-fifty."
Miguel's jaw clenches. "That's extortion."
"That's business." Johnny's voice is hollow. "I refuse, I lose the dojo to eviction. I accept, I give him legitimate authority."
"We'll find the money," I say. Desperate. "Fundraising. Loans. Something."
"In how long? Rent's due in three days." Johnny sits heavily. "He planned this perfectly. Waited until I was vulnerable then made his move."
[CRISIS POINT REACHED]
[JOHNNY'S RESOLVE: 35 → 25/100 (near surrender)]
[KREESE INFLUENCE: 50 → 65/100]
[FINANCIAL LEVERAGE: Complete]
Two days later, Kreese calls an informal dojo meeting. Johnny's away handling some business. Convenient timing.
"We need to discuss Cobra Kai's direction."
Twenty students. Kreese at the front. Miguel, Aisha, and I standing together. Defensive formation.
"Sensei Lawrence means well. But he's soft. The old ways—my ways—are what made this dojo legendary."
Hawk nods enthusiastically. Tory watches with calculating eyes.
"Who's with me for returning to real Cobra Kai?"
It's a calculated coup. Forcing students to declare allegiance publicly.
Hawk steps forward immediately. "I'm with Sensei Kreese."
Tory follows. "Real Cobra Kai. The winning philosophy."
Others shift. Nervous. Uncertain. But several join the Kreese faction.
Miguel steps forward. Voice steady. "Johnny's our sensei. He earned loyalty by actually being here. Actually teaching. Actually caring about us as people, not just fighters."
"I'm with Sensei Lawrence," Aisha adds.
I step forward. "Johnny won us a championship. Built this place from nothing. Kreese just showed up to take credit and undermine everything."
The dojo splits. Roughly even. Kreese's side slightly larger.
Kreese smiles. "Democracy in action. The students have spoken."
Johnny arrives as the meeting's ending. Takes in the scene. The factions. The division.
His devastation is complete. Visible in every line of his body.
Kreese acts apologetic. Performance art. "Just wanted to address student concerns. Didn't mean to overstep."
[DOJO LOYALTY SPLIT:]
[Kreese Faction: 55%]
[Johnny Loyalists: 45%]
[KREESE INFLUENCE: 70/100 (Takeover imminent)]
That night, I'm cleaning equipment when raised voices carry from the office.
"You're destroying everything I built. Was that always the plan?"
Johnny. Anger and hurt.
"I'm saving it from your weakness." Kreese. Cold. Clinical. "Cobra Kai needs a strong leader. That's not you anymore. Maybe it never was."
I move closer. Can't help eavesdropping.
"You're manipulating them. The students. Me. Like you always did."
"I'm teaching them reality. That mercy is weakness. That winners don't apologize." Pause. "You had potential once, Johnny. But you threw it away for sentimentality."
"I threw away your poison. There's a difference."
I push through the door. Can't stay silent.
"Don't listen to him, Sensei. He's manipulating you like he did when you were seventeen."
Kreese turns. Eyes calculating. "And who are you? A bronze medal nobody trying to be relevant. At least Johnny achieved something before he failed."
The cruelty is targeted. Expert. Designed to hurt.
"I achieved what mattered. I kept my integrity."
"Integrity." Kreese laughs. "That's what losers say when they can't win."
I step forward. Fists clenched. Ready to throw everything away just to wipe that smile off his face.
Johnny intercepts. "Enough. Both of you. Get out, Ivyn."
"Sensei—"
"Out!"
I leave. Hands shaking. Rage and helplessness warring in my chest.
[STRESS: 90/100 (APPROACHING BREAKDOWN)]
[JOHNNY'S RESOLVE: 25/100]
[QUEST STATUS: PREVENT TAKEOVER]
[Critical juncture—next 48 hours determine outcome]
Later that night, Johnny calls. Voice hollow.
"I'm thinking of giving him the dojo. Maybe he's right. Maybe I'm not strong enough."
"That's what he wants you to think. It's psychological warfare."
"Or it's reality. Look at the numbers, Ivyn. Most students want his way. The money's his. The dojo's history is his." Pause. "Maybe I was just keeping it warm for him."
"You built this. Not him. He's a parasite claiming credit for your work."
"I don't know anymore. I don't know anything."
He hangs up. Leaves me in my apartment. Staring at walls.
Miguel comes over. Emergency meeting.
"We need leverage. Something to break Kreese's hold."
"Like what? He's got the money. The students. Johnny's confidence."
"There has to be something. A weakness. A vulnerability."
I review everything I know about Kreese. War crimes. Violence. The assault on Johnny.
But none of that has happened yet. The future I know is unreliable. I'm navigating blind.
[SYSTEM ANALYSIS: INSUFFICIENT DATA]
[KREESE BACKGROUND (CURRENT TIMELINE): Unknown criminal activity]
[LEVERAGE OPPORTUNITIES: None detected]
[RECOMMENDATION: Accept probable defeat or find alternative approach]
We strategize until 2 AM. No solutions. Just desperation and exhaustion.
Miguel leaves. I sit alone with the weight of impending failure.
"I've changed so much. Saved Miguel at the tournament. Built relationships. Fought Kreese's influence. And it might not be enough. He might still win. Take the dojo. Corrupt everyone."
"How do you fight someone who's already won in every timeline you remember?"
The System offers no answer. Just warnings about stress and burnout and breakdown thresholds.
I complete my Daily Quest on autopilot. Train with movements that feel disconnected from purpose.
Forty-eight hours to save Johnny's dojo.
Or watch Kreese claim victory and poison an entire generation of students.
The weight of it crushes down. Suffocating. Inescapable.
I fall asleep at my kitchen table. Exhausted. Defeated.
Dreaming of futures where I failed and everyone paid the price.
