Chapter 25 - CHAPTER 25: THE MIYAGI-DO ALTERNATIVE

CHAPTER 25: THE MIYAGI-DO ALTERNATIVE

POV: Ivyn Mikaelson

Daniel LaRusso's announcement ripples through the Valley like a stone dropped in still water.

Free karate lessons. His home. Miyagi-Do philosophy as explicit counter to Cobra Kai's aggression.

Strategic. Calculated. Immediately effective.

Students seeking an alternative flock to him.

Demetri is the first to defect.

He finds me in the library during lunch. Face apologetic. Shoulders tense.

"I'm out. Joining Miyagi-Do."

The words hit harder than expected. "Why?"

"I came to learn self-defense, not become an asshole." He adjusts his glasses. Nervous tic. "Kreese is turning that place into something I don't recognize. And Hawk... he's not Eli anymore. He's something else."

"I'm trying to fight that. Miguel and I, we're—"

"I know. And I respect it. But I can't stay while you fight that battle." He pauses. "I'm sorry, Ivyn. But I need to get out before it changes me too."

I want to argue. Can't find the words.

He leaves. Another student lost. Another piece of Johnny's foundation crumbling.

Hawk's reaction during training is predictable. Explosive.

"Demetri quit. Joined LaRusso." His voice drips contempt. "Pathetic. Running because he can't handle real training."

"He left because the culture's toxic," I counter. "Because Kreese is—"

"Because he's weak." Hawk's eyes are hard. "We're better off without him. Without anyone who can't commit fully."

Several students follow Demetri's path over the next week. Moderates who wanted Johnny's teachings but reject Kreese's extremism.

Cobra Kai's enrollment drops twenty percent. The financial impact immediate. Visible in Johnny's face. His slumped shoulders.

[COBRA KAI ENROLLMENT: -20%]

[FINANCIAL STRAIN: Severe]

[JOHNNY'S CONFIDENCE: 45 → 35/100]

[MIYAGI-DO: Growing rapidly]

Sam starts training at her father's Miyagi-Do. The news comes via text.

"Dad's officially opening Miyagi-Do. I'm going to train there. Hope you understand."

I stare at the message. The dojo war making everything personal. Complicated.

She finds me after school. Library table. Our usual spot that feels less safe now.

"You should join us." Her voice is gentle. Hopeful. "Dad's teaching real karate. Defense. Balance. Philosophy. Not whatever Cobra Kai's becoming."

"I can't abandon Johnny. Not now. Not when Kreese is destroying everything."

"Then you're choosing the dojo over us?"

"I'm choosing to fight for what's right. If everyone good leaves, Kreese wins by default."

Sam's empathy wars with frustration. "So we're on opposite sides of a dojo war? That's not sustainable, Ivyn."

"We keep the relationship separate from dojo politics. We can do that."

She wants to believe it. I can see the doubt.

"My dad's not going to like this. He already thinks Cobra Kai is corrupting you."

"Your dad thinks everything Cobra Kai is corruption."

The words come out sharper than intended. She flinches.

"I'm sorry. I just... this is hard enough without Daniel judging me."

"He's not judging. He's worried." She takes my hand. "I'm worried."

"I know. But I have to see this through."

She nods. Squeezes my hand. Leaves.

The strain is visible. Growing. A crack in the foundation we built.

[RELATIONSHIP STATUS: SAM LARUSSO]

[Girlfriend—Strained by Dojo Politics]

[Warning: Continued stress may cause fracture]

The inevitable collision happens Friday night. Local hangout. Golf N' Stuff.

Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do students in the same space. Tensions high. Alcohol involved despite everyone being underage.

Hawk spots Demetri. Anger immediate. Visible.

"Look who showed up. The traitor."

Demetri tries walking away. Hawk follows.

"What, you're too good for us now? LaRusso teaching you to be a pussy?"

"I'm not doing this, Eli."

"Don't call me that!" Hawk shoves him. Hard. Demetri stumbles.

Robby steps between them. "Back off."

"Or what? You'll cry to your sensei?"

The shove becomes a push. The push becomes a swing.

Miguel intercepts. "We're not doing this here."

But Kreese's teachings have taken root. Hawk's face twisted with rage.

"Back down from LaRusso's students? That's weakness."

The brawl erupts. Brief. Brutal.

I try preventing it. Pulling students apart. But I'm drawn in defending Miguel from two Cobra Kai students I don't even know.

Then I'm facing Robby. Both of us holding back. Neither wanting this.

But the crowd's bloodlust demands commitment.

We exchange strikes. His technique cleaner. More refined. My offense more aggressive. Each pull punches fractionally. Enough to look real. Not enough to actually hurt.

His jab tags my cheek. My cross glances his shoulder.

"This is insane. We're friends. And we're fighting because old men couldn't let go of high school."

Security breaks it up. Shouts. Threats of police.

We scatter. Separate directions. The message clear:

The dojo war is no longer philosophical. It's physical.

[VALLEY LANDSCAPE: FRACTURED]

[Cobra Kai: Enrollment declining, culture toxic]

[Miyagi-Do: Growing, attracting moderates]

[Street fighting incidents: Increasing]

[REPUTATION (VALLEY): Polarized]

That night, Sam calls. Voice tight.

"Robby told me what happened. You fought him?"

"I tried stopping it. Got pulled in."

"This is getting out of control. People are going to get seriously hurt."

"I know."

"Then do something about it. Walk away. Join Miyagi-Do. Let Kreese have Cobra Kai if he wants it that badly."

"I can't. Johnny needs—"

"Johnny's an adult. You're eighteen. This isn't your responsibility."

"Then whose is it?"

She doesn't answer. The silence heavy with everything unsaid.

"I love you," I say. Desperate. "But I can't abandon this fight."

"I love you too. I just wish you'd fight smarter instead of harder."

She hangs up. Leaves me staring at my phone.

[STRESS: 80/100 (NEAR CRITICAL)]

[COMBAT XP GAINS: -50% from baseline]

[FOCUS: Declining due to stress]

[WARNING: Burnout threshold approaching]

[RECOMMENDATION: Disengage or accept permanent consequences]

I dismiss the warnings. Complete my Daily Quest through sheer stubbornness. Train with movements that feel mechanical. Disconnected.

The Valley's karate community has fractured along philosophical lines. Cobra Kai's "strike first" aggression versus Miyagi-Do's defensive balance.

Everyone forced to choose sides.

I remain loyal to Johnny while privately agreeing with Daniel's criticisms. The cognitive dissonance exhausting. Wearing me down bit by bit.

But quitting isn't an option. Not when Kreese's influence grows daily. Not when Johnny's stability depends on loyal students holding the line.

"How much longer can I sustain this? How much more can I give before there's nothing left?"

The System offers no comfort. Just data. Statistics. Warnings about burnout and breakdown.

I ignore them all and plan for tomorrow's battles.

Because that's all I can do.

Fight. Endure. Survive.

One day at a time.
