Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: A Controlled Distance

Chapter 27: A Controlled Distance

The palace gates were busier than usual that morning.

A notice had been posted days earlier new workers were being accepted into the palace service.

Nothing unusual.

Just routine expansion.

But among the crowd…

two new faces moved carefully through the gates.

Quiet.

Unnoticed.

Carefully blending in.

---

The guard at the entrance barely glanced at them.

"Names."

The man stepped forward first.

"Daniel."

The woman followed calmly.

"Marian."

A pause.

The guard nodded and marked their names down.

"Proceed. You'll be assigned duties inside."

They bowed slightly.

"Thank you."

And just like that

they entered.

---

Inside the palace walls, everything looked peaceful.

But for them

every step was calculated.

Every glance measured.

"We're inside," Marian whispered under her breath.

Daniel gave a slight nod.

"Stay alert. We don't make mistakes."

---

Elsewhere

Emily sat in the palace garden.

Still.

Composed.

Her expression unreadable.

But her thoughts were not calm.

---

Kira.

That was where her mind kept returning.

Not because of rejection.

But because of progress.

Small.

Subtle.

But real.

---

Today, she decided something.

She would approach him again.

Not as someone waiting.

But as someone choosing.

---

She stood slowly.

And walked.

---

Kira was already in the garden.

Standing as he always did.

Distant.

Controlled.

Unmoved.

---

Emily approached him calmly.

No hesitation.

No urgency.

Just presence.

---

He noticed her immediately.

Of course he did.

He always did.

---

But as she came closer

something shifted inside him.

---

A memory surfaced.

Uninvited.

Unavoidable.

---

"You will treat her properly."

His father's voice.

Firm.

Cold.

Final.

---

"This marriage is not about emotion. It is about stability."

Kira's expression did not change.

But his thoughts tightened.

"Do not create unnecessary distance or conflict."

The memory faded.

But its weight remained.

By the time Emily stopped in front of him

Kira was already composed again.

Controlled.

"You seem calmer," Emily said softly.

---

Kira glanced at her.

"Do I?"

---

"Yes."

A pause.

"It suits you."

---

Kira nodded slightly.

Almost imperceptibly.

---

Emily hesitated for a moment.

Then

"I thought we could walk."

Silence.

Brief.

Measured.

Then

"Alright."

They began walking.

Side by side.

Not close.

Not distant.

Just structured.

---

Emily didn't push him today.

She didn't test.

She didn't force meaning into silence.

She simply stayed present.

---

And Kira

allowed it.

After a while, he spoke.

"Does this matter to you?"

"Yes," she answered honestly.

No hesitation.

A pause.

Then Kira nodded once.

Slowly.

"Then it is fine."

Simple words.

Not emotional.

Not warm.

But intentional.

Elsewhere in the palace

Helena moved quickly through the corridor.

Her breathing uneven.

Her chest tight.

Something was wrong again.

---

A sudden pulse surged through her body.

Stronger than before.

She stopped abruptly.

Her hand pressed against the wall.

"No…"

she whispered.

"Not now…"

---

The air around her trembled slightly.

A nearby object shifted.

Just slightly.

Unnaturally.

---

And somewhere unseen

someone noticed.

---

Far away, Daniel suddenly paused.

His head tilted slightly.

"She's close."

---

Marian's expression tightened.

"And unstable again."

---

They moved.

Immediately.

Quietly.

---

Back in the corridor

Elena's control began to slip further.

The energy inside her pushing outward.

Resisting her.

---

Then

footsteps approached behind her.

---

Before she could react

a hand caught her wrist.

---

Everything stopped.

Instantly.

Helena froze.

Slowly turned.

---

Daniel stood beside her.

Calm.

Firm.

Unshaken.

---

"Not here," he said quietly.

---

Helena stared at him, confused.

Breathing uneven.

"What is happening to me?"

---

A brief pause.

"You're changing," he replied.

And for the first time

Helena didn't have an answer.

Only fear.

---

And somewhere in the palace

Emily stopped walking suddenly.

Her gaze sharpened slightly.

---

"It's her again…"

she murmured.

Kira looked at her.

But she said nothing more.

And deep within the palace

something unseen continued to watch.

Waiting.

Patient.

Unforgiving.
