Chapter 26: Between Hope and Suspicion

Emily was not a fool.

She noticed changes.

Even the smallest ones.

And this time…

she allowed herself to feel it.

The memory of the previous night lingered in her mind.

Kira had not turned away.

He had not been cold.

He had listened.

And that alone—

felt like progress.

A small one.

But real.

Emily stood by her mirror, a faint smile resting on her lips.

"Maybe…" she whispered softly.

Maybe she wasn't alone in this after all.

But hope did not blind her.

It only made her more aware.

Later that day, Emily walked through the palace halls, her steps calm, her expression composed.

Her eyes, however

were searching.

And then she saw her.

"Helena."

Helena stopped immediately and bowed.

"Your Highness."

Emily studied her quietly.

There it was again.

That feeling.

Something about her…

wasn't right.

"You've been making mistakes lately," Emily said gently.

Not accusing.

Just observing.

Helena lowered her head further.

"I'm sorry, Your Highness."

Her voice was steady.

But her hands

were not.

They trembled slightly.

Just enough to notice.

Emily stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if approaching something fragile.

Or dangerous.

"Are you unwell?" she asked.

Helena shook her head quickly.

"No, Your Highness."

Another lie.

Emily could feel it now.

Not just suspicion

certainty beginning to form.

And then it happened.

A sudden shift in the air.

Subtle.

But wrong.

Helena stiffened.

Her breath hitched slightly.

As if something inside her

was struggling to stay contained.

Emily's eyes narrowed just a little.

She didn't move.

Didn't speak.

She simply watched.

For a brief moment

the faintest ripple passed through the space between them.

Like invisible energy brushing against the air.

Gone almost instantly.

But not unnoticed.

Elena stepped back suddenly.

"I...I should return to work," she said quickly.

Without waiting for permission, she turned and walked away.

Too fast.

Too uneasy.

Emily remained where she stood.

Silent.

Still.

Thinking.

"Kira…"

The name left her lips quietly.

His hesitation.

His uncertainty.

And now

this girl.

Emily's expression hardened slightly.

Not with anger.

But with realization.

"It's you, isn't it…?"

Not a question.

A thought.

One she wasn't ready to say out loud yet.

Across the palace

Helena leaned against the wall, her breathing uneven.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

"I can't control it…"

she whispered.

Her fingers curled tightly.

And suddenly

a stronger pulse surged through her.

The nearby candle flickered violently.

The air shifted.

And then

silence.

Helena stared at her hands in fear.

"What… am I becoming…?"

Far away

the man's eyes snapped open.

"She's losing control."

The woman turned sharply.

"Then we're too late."

A pause.

Heavy.

Final.

"No," he said.

"This is where it begins."
