Chapter 15 - ALLURING EYES

Lady Vanya excused herself from the gathering, the warm glow of the candelabras and the soft hum of conversation fading into the distance as she walked out of the grand ballroom. Paddy, her loyal handmaiden, followed closely behind, her eyes scanning the hallway with a mixture of concern and curiosity.

While the ladies left the Hall, two pairs of eyes followed their departing figure.

"Milady, are you certain you're alright?" Paddy asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "You seemed... distracted."

Lady Vanya smiled softly, her eyes drifting towards the hallway that led to the garden. "I'm fine, Paddy. I just need some fresh air. It's stifling in there."

Paddy's gaze lingered on Lady Vanya's face, her expression uncertain. "But, milady, it's not safe for you to be out there alone. What if "

Lady Vanya's laughter was gentle, but firm. "Paddy, I'm not a child. I can take care of myself. Besides, I'll be in the gazebo. It's perfectly safe."

Paddy's hesitation was palpable, but Lady Vanya's reassuring smile seemed to ease her concerns. "Very well, milady. But promise me you'll be careful."

Lady Vanya's eyes sparkled with amusement. "I promise, Paddy. Now, tell me, is there any danger lurking in the shadows that I should be aware of?"

Paddy's gaze darted around the hallway, her voice dropping to a whisper. "No, milady. But I'll stay here, just in case Madam Theresa comes looking for you."

Lady Vanya nodded, her smile softening. "Thank you, Paddy. I'll be fine."

With a gentle squeeze of Paddy's hand, Lady Vanya turned and walked towards the garden, the soft rustle of her gown echoing through the hallway. As she stepped out into the cool night air, the sounds of the ballroom faded into the distance, replaced by the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the soft chirping of crickets.

The gazebo beckoned, its soft glow casting a warm light on the garden path. Lady Vanya's footsteps were light, her heart feeling a sense of freedom she hadn't experienced in a long time. But as she approached the gazebo very close to the water fountain bedazzled with lights, she noticed it was occupied by a group of guests, their laughter and conversation carrying through the night air.

Lady Vanya's eyes scanned the garden, searching for a quieter spot. That's when she saw it a smaller gazebo, partially hidden behind a tree, its lamps casting a soft, golden glow. She smiled to herself, feeling a sense of excitement and curiosity. Maybe this was exactly what she needed a moment of peace, away from the prying eyes and wagging tongues.

As she walked towards the secluded gazebo, the trees seemed to close in around her, casting long shadows across the path. Lady Vanya's heart beat a little faster, her senses on high alert. She felt a thrill of excitement, mixed with a hint of fear. As Lady Vanya settled into the secluded gazebo, the soft glow of the lamps cast a warm light on her face. She closed her eyes, letting the peacefulness of the garden wash over her. The sound of maids and servants scurrying about, the distant clinking of glasses, and the muffled laughter of the guests all blended together to create a soothing background hum.

But as she sat there, her senses began to pick up on something else. A subtle movement, a faint rustling sound, caught her attention. Lady Vanya's eyes snapped open, and she scanned the surrounding area. That's when she saw it a silhouette, standing just beyond the ring of light cast by the gazebo's lamps.

The figure was partially hidden by a cluster of bushes, making it difficult to discern any defining features. Lady Vanya's heart skipped a beat as she wondered who it could be. Was it a guest, seeking solitude like herself? Or perhaps a servant, sneaking a moment of respite?

As she watched, the figure seemed to shift, its presence becoming more pronounced. Lady Vanya's instincts screamed at her to alert the guards, to ensure her safety. But something about the figure's stance, its quiet stillness, stayed her hand.

Instead, she felt a thrill of curiosity. Who was this mysterious person, and what were they doing lurking in the shadows? Lady Vanya's eyes locked onto the figure, her gaze tracing the outline of its form. And then, without thinking, she stood up, her movements quiet on the stone floor of the gazebo.

She took a step forward, her heart pounding in her chest. The figure seemed to sense her movement, its head seemed to nudge towards her. For a moment, it felt like their eyes met, and Lady Vanya felt a jolt of electricity run through her veins, it seemed as those same pair of eyes that haunted her every time .

Without hesitation, she followed the figure as it moved away from the end of the gazebo, into the darker recesses of the garden. The trees seemed to close in around them, casting deep shadows that made it difficult to see. But Lady Vanya didn't hesitate, her heart pounding in her chest. She was determined to uncover the identity of this mysterious figure, and what it wanted.

As Lady Vanya followed the figure, the garden seemed to grow denser, the shadows deepening into mysterious pools of darkness. She walked quickly, her heart pounding in her chest, as she tried to keep the figure in sight. The path twisted and turned, leading her through a maze of high bushes and standing boulders, the sound of her footsteps echoing off the stone.

The figure seemed to know the path well, moving with a confident stride that Lady Vanya struggled to match. She stumbled once, her foot catching on a loose stone, but managed to catch herself before she fell. She believed that the figure didn't seem to notice her following it, its attention fixed on some point ahead.

As they walked, the garden grew wilder, the trees becoming more twisted and gnarled. Lady Vanya felt a sense of unease growing inside her, a feeling that she was being led deeper into the heart of the estate, further and further from the safety of the ballroom.

Suddenly, the figure vanished, disappearing into the darkness like a ghost. Lady Vanya stopped, her heart racing, as she looked around frantically. Where had it gone? She took a step forward, her eyes scanning the shadows, but there was no sign of the figure.

She stood there for a moment, her chest heaving, as she tried to get her bearings. And then, as she turned to retrace her steps, she saw him. The figure stood just a few feet away, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly light in the darkness.

Lady Vanya's breath caught in her throat as she met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. For a moment, they just looked at each other, the only sound the distant hum of the garden. And then, without thinking, Lady Vanya took a step forward, her eyes locked on his face.

The world around her seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them, standing there in the darkness. Lady Vanya felt a sense of connection, of recognition, that she couldn't explain. It was as if she had known this person before, even though she was certain she had never seen him.

The figure didn't move, its eyes fixed on hers, as Lady Vanya took another step forward. And then, in a movement that was almost imperceptible, it reached out and touched her face. Lady Vanya's heart skipped a beat as she felt its fingers brush against her skin, sending shivers down her spine, tracing her face down to the collar of her neck, his eyes traced down her bosom with seemingly greed.

"What are you?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. The figure didn't respond, its eyes never leaving hers, as Lady Vanya reached out and touched its face in return.

It was like the moon was on cue, she saw his face pale as snow, his features pronounced even as it hide in the shadows of the night only the moon casting shadows over them, he's height made her feel small hovering over her like a predator. She could vow she saw a pair of elongated tooth, a fang?.

Now she could put a face to that striking eyes.

She soon found her foot, her bearings and stepped away, ignited with a little fear she stumbled back and immediately caught by the bushes behind her, snapping her eyes back from the sudden shock, the man had vanished.

She frantically adjusted and rushed out of the carvings, trying to find her way back in a hurry, she soon found a familiar path and hurried through, it grabbed the attention of the few people outside, why's a lady frantically flushed rushing back into the gazebo. Paddy noticed her and rushed to her and Theresa too found her a little flushed, they decided to retire for the night as the noticed too much attention had been brought to them.
