Chapter 14 - DARK

The grand ballroom fell silent as the herald's voice boomed through the hall. "His Grace attends on the envoy of his Deputy, Lord Alexander Valoric!" The guests turned their attention to the entrance, their faces a mixture of curiosity and anticipation.

Lord Alexander Valoric, the mysterious visitor who had brought the invitation to the royal gathering to the Emeraldae estate, stood tall, his presence commanding attention. He was the confidante of His Grace, sent to represent him in his stead. As he moved through the crowd, his eyes scanned the room, taking in the assembly of nobles and guests.

The sound of soft music and the rustle of fabrics filled the air as the guests parted to allow Lord Alexander to reach the center of the room. He bowed low, as he went to the middle of the hall a slight hiked podium, his movements economical and deliberate.

"Welcome, esteemed guests, to this gathering of nobles and friends," Lord Alexander said, his voice smooth and polished. "I bring greetings from His Grace, who regrets his inability to attend. As is customary, I represent him in his stead."

The guests nodded, their faces reflecting their intrigue. It was no secret that His Grace rarely attended social gatherings, in simple facts most of them have never encountered their ruler and the fact that he had sent Lord Alexander Valoric as his envoy spoke volumes about the importance of this event.

As Lord Alexander began to make his way through the crowd, greeting the guests and exchanging pleasantries, his eyes seemed to linger on certain individuals. His gaze was piercing, as if he saw beyond the façade of polite smiles and courteous words.

The atmosphere in the ballroom was charged with anticipation, the guests wondering what the night would bring. And Lord Alexander Valoric, with his enigmatic smile and air of confidence, seemed to be the key to unlocking the secrets that lay hidden beneath the surface or not.

As Lord Alexander Valoric continued to greet the guests, his eyes scanned the room, taking in the various reactions to his presence. He moved with a confident air, his smile courteous, but his gaze piercing.

After addressing the assembly, Lord Alexander began to approach the guests he had been sent to meet directly. His steps were deliberate, his movements economical, as he navigated the crowded ballroom. The guests parted to allow him to pass, their faces a mixture of curiosity and respect, all trying to get on his good grace and make conversation still being weary.

As he approached the Emeraldae family, his eyes locked onto Vanya, and a hint of a smile played on his lips. "Ah, the Emeraldaes," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I'm pleased to see you could join us tonight."

Madam Theresa, Vanya's guardian, curtsied low, her face a mask of politeness. "The honor is ours, Lord Alexander," she replied, her voice courteous.

Lord Alexander's gaze lingered on Vanya, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Lady Vanya, you look lovely tonight," he said, his voice dripping with sincerity.

Vanya smiled, feeling a sense of unease beneath Lord Alexander's gaze. She wasn't sure what to make of him, but she was determined to be polite. "Thank you, Lord Alexander," she replied, her voice soft.

Lord Alexander continued to chat with Vanya's family, his eyes seemed to bore into their very souls, as if searching for something hidden beneath the surface. The air around them grew thick with tension, and Vanya couldn't shake the feeling that Lord Alexander was hiding something behind his courteous smile.

Lord Alexander eyes seemed to gleam with interest, his questions probing gently deeper , like a masterful fencer testing his opponent's defenses.

Emeraldae family and their dynamics becoming increasingly apparent. Vanya's defenses remained high, her responses measured and cautious, while Madam Theresa watched with a keen eye, ensuring that their guest didn't overstep.

"I must say, Lady Vanya, you're quite... resourceful," Lord Alexander said, his voice laced with a hint of admiration. "Managing the estate, caring for your family... it's no easy feat, especially for one so young." "Tell me, Lady Vanya, how do you find managing the Emeraldae estate without... guidance?" he asked, his voice laced with a hint of curiosity and lace of probing.

Vanya's grip on her kerchief tightened, her eyes flashing with a mixture of annoyance and wariness.

Her smile was polite, but her eyes betrayed a flash of annoyance. "I've had to learn and to adapt,, Lord Alexander, necessity can be a powerful teacher."

"she replied, her voice smooth, but with a hint of steel beneath.

She was used to people tiptoeing around her situation, but Lord Alexander's directness was both refreshing and unsettling.

Lord Alexander's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Indeed it can. He responded sharply. His eyes traveled around the family.

Madam Theresa, Vanya's guardian, placed a gentle hand on Vanya's arm, her eyes warning her to be cautious he may seem jovial and all but all nobleman are dangerous especially royal ones. "Lord Alexander, perhaps we shouldn't burden Miss Vanya with such questions. She's still young to bear such responsibilities," she said, her voice soft but firm.

Lord Alexander's smile grew, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Ah, but Miss Vanya is more capable than she lets on, I'm sure. And I'm curious about her thoughts on managing the estate and the mine." His tone was light, but Vanya sensed a subtle undercurrent, a hint that he was testing her mettle.

As Lord Alexander turned to Paddy, Vanya's defenses went up, her eyes flashing with protectiveness. "And I see that you've surrounded yourself with loyal and capable people, like Miss Paddy here." His gaze flicked to Paddy, who stood quietly behind Vanya, her eyes cast downward.

" how do you find your... duties, Miss Paddy I suppose ?" Lord Alexander asked, his voice low and smooth.

Paddy's eyes finally shifted tilting her head up, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's... it's my duty to serve the Emeraldae family, milord."

Vanya's gaze narrowed, her voice taking on a defensive tone. Her eyes met Lord Alexander's, a spark of tension between them. "Paddy is more than just a servant, Lord Alexander. She's a friend, a confidante... a member of our family."

Lord Alexander's smile grew, his eyes glinting with amusement and interest . "Ah, I see. Well, it's clear that Miss Paddy is... dear to you, Lady Vanya and the value for loyalty and devotion are intent. Those are admirable qualities in anyone, I'm sure she's a valuable member of your household."

Madam Theresa's voice was smooth as silk. "Yes, Paddy has been a valuable member of our household. We're fortunate to have her in our house, Theresa spoke to ease off the tension, she could only ease off the mood to prevent further or any crisis. The last thing the need is to make an enemy.

Madam Theresa's hand tightened on Vanya's arm, a gentle warning to keep her temper in check. Vanya took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down, but her eyes never left Lord Alexander's face.

The conversation flowed on, with Lord Alexander's questions and comments probing gently, but Vanya couldn't shake the feeling that he was searching for something more, something hidden beneath the surface.

She was determined to keep her secrets safe, and Paddy's dignity intact.

She reached for paddy soon after the lord moved from them, Theresa had stepped to meet with the previous lady.

"Paddy are you blushing" Vanya's voice rose in surprise while taking a good look a her confidant.

Paddy shook her head in so much vigorous waves Vanya feared she'd take if her own head from the force.

"It's okay Paddy it must be the drink I suppose but you've been acting weird since your return from the loo, are you sure you're okay".

"No there's nothing to it my lady, I only bumped into a lord on my way back".

"Oh my. ..did he hurt or try to hurt you?" Vanya exclaimed.

"No no no my lady he was…kind, her ears glowed red".

Of course Vanya didn't miss any reaction she knows there's allot to it.

"I must hear of everything when we return but you must be careful Paddy.

"I am my lady thank you" she said smiling as she took a cup of grape juice Vanya served her, she glanced behind her sharply.

Vanya's gaze drifted upward, her eyes locking onto the pinnacle of the great hall. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she caught sight of the pair of eyes, it glowed, watching from the shadows. The eyes seemed to bore into her very soul, and Vanya's heart skipped a beat, oddly she wasn't scared a kind of feeling she couldn't place.

Lord Alexander's gaze followed Vanya's, and his eyes met hers in a brief, intense stare. For a moment, they seemed to share a secret understanding, a knowledge that only they possessed. Vanya's skin prickled with unease as Lord Alexander's smile grew, his eyes glinting with amusement.

"Ah, Lady Vanya, I see you're admiring the architecture of the hall," Lord Alexander said, strolling back to his previous spot, his voice smooth as silk. "It's indeed a magnificent structure, isn't it?"

Vanya's eyes dropped, her face growing warm with embarrassment. "Yes, Lord Alexander. It's a beautiful hall."

Lord Alexander's gaze lingered on Vanya's face, his eyes searching for something. And then, his eyes flicked upward, meeting the gaze of the mysterious watcher in the shadows. For a moment, the two seemed to share a silent understanding, a connection that Vanya couldn't quite grasp.

The air seemed to thicken with tension as Vanya felt herself caught in a web of secrets and hidden meanings. She was unsure what Lord Alexander's true intentions were, but she was determined to uncover them. And as she looked up at the pinnacle of the hall, she felt a sense of unease, a feeling that she was being watched and waited for.

The air choked her and she needed a brief clear air.
