Chapter 34 - Decoy Tactics – The House of Pain

Blade suddenly sprang up and smashed a one-handed punch into Reinhardt's knee. The crack of bone was chillingly clear—sharp enough to make one's teeth ache just hearing it.

And in this pure contest of raw power, the one who suffered was clearly Reinhardt, the pure-blooded vampire. That fierce strike made his knee swell instantly; the bones inside had obviously been knocked out of alignment. But for him, that wasn't even the worst part.

Blade hadn't only damaged his knee—he had also destroyed Reinhardt's balance mid-air.With nowhere to brace himself, the force sent Reinhardt tumbling forward helplessly.

Up ahead, Blade was already in position, waiting. Before Reinhardt even hit the ground, Blade stepped in like an old acquaintance greeting him—only with absolutely no good intentions.

He clamped both hands around Reinhardt's arms and pressed down savagely.Reinhardt let out a tortured roar as his arms twisted into a grotesque angle.

In only a few breaths, Reinhardt had fallen into absolute disadvantage. The situation made it painfully clear to the vampires: their opponent was far stronger than they had expected. But they had been prepared for this—and they also knew one thing: they were a team, unlike Blade, who fought alone.

The moment Reinhardt screamed, members of his Blood Guard could no longer hold back.Lightaxe was the first to act. His muscles were impressive, but his brain—also seemingly made of pure muscle—made him the only one reckless enough to intervene.

The others either hesitated or simply didn't care, clearly unwilling to move. After all, Blade wasn't going to kill anyone in this moment.Only Lightaxe raised his massive axe and brought it down at Blade in a brutal overhead swing.

Against such savage force, Blade had two choices: let go and dodge, or get hit together with his captive. He was unwilling to take the blow—and just as unwilling to release the hard-won hostage. So he chose a third option: wait for backup.

Backup arrived instantly.

Before anyone's eyes could catch it, a black-cloaked, black-armored figure was already blocking the falling blade of Lightaxe's axe.

Seeing someone standing in his way, Lightaxe's single-track mind had no intention of stopping. He flashed a bloodthirsty grin, his pupils shrinking with excitement. His hunger for blood was already making him impatient.

As the weapon was about to land, Medusa triggered a warning:the Mark II Dawn Armor had only 7,400 pounds of impact resistance—insufficient to withstand such a barbaric strike.A vampire's superhuman strength combined with a heavy axe could easily tear through it.

Unfortunately for Lightaxe, the Dawn Armor had always been more show than substance.Especially in its user's eyes—Zhou Yi never relied on it to be a superhero. The Dawn Knight's reputation did not come from his armor alone.

In the most unexpected moment imaginable, Zhou Yi reached out and grabbed the massive axe bare-handed.Sparks flared where the blade scraped against the armored gauntlet.Zhou Yi felt the edge cut through the armor and touch his skin—but that was as far as it went.

His body was far harder than the armor—Zhou Yi had never doubted that.

The momentum of the axe was completely halted. In Zhou Yi's palm, it was like a foolish weapon trying to cleave stone—only to jam itself immovably.

Lightaxe had never imagined such a thing. He strained desperately, but the axe wouldn't move—rooted as if into solid bedrock. He saw the blade begin to deform, the tough metal twisting like putty between the stranger's fingers, squeezing out through the gaps.

In that instant, he realized he'd made a terrible mistake—but it was already too late.

Zhou Yi shifted his strength, using leverage from the most impossible angle. He exerted force through the blade and lifted Lightaxe's enormous body off the ground. Before the vampire could react, Zhou Yi flung him—axe and all—straight into an old car that had clearly been through many years.

The heavy body, combined with the force of the throw, didn't just crush the roof—it caved in half the chassis.Judging by the damage, the antique car was completely totaled, beyond any hope of repair.Compared to that, Lightaxe—head split and bleeding—actually looked rather fortunate.

Blade, still restraining Reinhardt, took out a small, delicate device. One end was a sharp hook; the other was a miniature signal receiver. He pressed it against the back of Reinhardt's skull. The hook instantly dug into flesh, anchoring firmly.

"This is an explosive device."Blade glared coldly at the remaining restless vampires and pulled out a small trigger."It's filled with silver nitrate. I'd love to know whether a pure-blood dies if their skull gets blown open and soaked in the stuff. You can help me find out. As long as I press this button—or if any of you touch this little gadget, it'll—"

He finished with a gesture mimicking an explosion.

Reinhardt, who had just been about to reach for the back of his head, froze. He shot Blade a venomous glare, twisted his thigh with a sharp crack to reset his dislocated bone, and silently walked back to the vampire group.

This round was clearly a show of dominance from Blade and the Dawn Knight.

Watching Verlaine and Priest struggle to pull Lightaxe up, Blade walked over to the Dawn Knight, face dark, and lowered his voice.

"That was my favorite car. I treated her like a wife."

"Sorry!" Zhou Yi blinked, surprised, and apologized."I'll compensate you. If you have a model you like, just send me the bill."

"I'll remember that."Blade, satisfied, quietly walked off.

The vampires eyed the whispering pair warily, never imagining that the two vampire hunters had just settled a transaction over an old car.In their minds, the hunters must have been discussing the outcome of their clash.

Humans or vampires—it was all the same.Self-importance clouded judgment. They had no idea that neither hunter cared about them at all.Their real concern was those mutated creatures—not the vampires.

Still, being misunderstood wasn't without benefits. At the very least, the vampires kept their arrogance in check. The two hunters' performance was more than enough to intimidate them.

Seeing their reactions, Blade curled his lip in a silent smirk. He looked toward the vampire leader—Nyssa.

"So how exactly do you plan to find those mutants? Just stroll into an alley with a sign on your back saying 'Come eat me'?"

Blade never bothered to sugar-coat anything when speaking to vampires.Maybe he counted verbal abuse as part of his profession—though Zhou Yi suspected it was more of a racial talent.

"I searched all of Manhattan's red-light districts and underground stops last night," Zhou Yi added."Nothing. Only traces of attacks. They operate with coordinated strategy and unified command. When not hunting, they hide perfectly. If you can't find them, everything else is meaningless."

Though his words sounded like questioning, Zhou Yi had actually stepped in to deflect Blade's aggression, sparing Nyssa from answering directly.

Nyssa gave Zhou Yi a long look and laid out her plan.

"To catch hunters, you start with their prey. These mutants don't discriminate—humans or vampires, they'll eat anything. But judging from Charnos' behavior, he prefers targeting vampires. That means vampires are their first choice."

"My father has ordered all vampires to abandon the other bloodhouses, leaving only one active. Unless they stay home obediently, anyone wanting a feast will have to go to that one bloodhouse. At that point, it will be the only place in New York with large gatherings of vampires."

"They'll have no choice but to go there. Only there can satisfy their growing numbers. They spread too fast—ordinary prey isn't enough anymore."

"Very good!" Blade clapped once. "What's the place called?"

"The House of Pain."

The two hunters and the vampire team soon arrived at the so-called House of Pain.It was a boarded-up, decrepit apartment building—so old and broken that no one would believe anyone lived there.

Blade eyed the ruin and asked, puzzled:

"No signboards, no vampire statues, no symbols. This is your biggest bloodhouse?"

"Because of you, we've had to change our habits."Nyssa handed him an infrared scanner.Through it, a symbol—only visible in infrared—appeared clearly on the wall.

"Great. The House of Pain. I'll remember it. I'll be a regular from now on."Blade grinned, showing a suspicious amount of enthusiasm.

Visits from Blade were never good news for vampires.Nyssa ignored the deliberate provocation and turned to Zhou Yi.

"Dawn Knight—you can't go in like that."She pointed at his armor."You'll expose our presence."

"Aren't there cross-dressing vampires?" Zhou Yi asked, looking at his gauntlets.

Nyssa rolled her eyes, while Blade laughed loudly.

"Buddy, trust me. They don't have anyone as stylish as you. Their taste is terrible."

Zhou Yi shrugged, pulled his cloak around himself, and as faint ripples of light flickered—he vanished from sight.

"Awesome! Optical-camouflage stealth system!"Josh, ever the tech geek, immediately shouted the name of the tech."I thought this stuff only existed in military budgets! Didn't think you already had a working prototype—man, your level is insane!"

"Flattered," came the Dawn Knight's deep voice from behind Nyssa—his invisible presence all the more intimidating. No one wanted to get snuck up on by someone they couldn't see.

"Let's go," Zhou Yi said with a soft laugh—drifting like a breeze. The Blood Guard tensed instinctively, yet secretly felt relieved.

For now, at least, they were on the same side.
