Chapter 110: The Gaze of the Mangekyō

"Shatter, Kyōka Suigetsu!"

As Aizen uttered the release command, the Zanpakutō that had once toyed with countless powerful beings in the palm of its master began its second liberation in this new world, its sinister brilliance blooming once more.

A low, almost imperceptible hum.

An invisible wave of energy pulsed from the blade of Kyōka Suigetsu, rippling outwards in a silent, instantaneous wave.

Both Uchiha Itachi and Kisame experienced a fleeting moment of disorientation. As powerful as they were, a faint sense of confusion clouded their minds for a single, critical second. It was as if a gap had opened in their consciousness, a brief lapse in their perception of reality. The feeling vanished as quickly as it came, and everything seemed to return to normal.

Aizen, now holding his released Zanpakutō, took a calm, measured step forward. With each step, the immense pressure of his spiritual energy—his Reiatsu—rose steadily, projecting an aura of absolute, unshakable control.

"This fluctuation… so that's what it was."

For the first time, a flicker of emotion crossed Uchiha Itachi's typically impassive face. He finally understood the peculiar, elusive energy he had been sensing from Aizen since his arrival. This energy resonated with a power he knew intimately—the unique power of his own ocular techniques.

Illusion.

Stimulated by this realization, Itachi's pupils constricted sharply. An invisible surge of pupil power emanated from his eyes. Though the immediate effect of Aizen's release command had seemed minor, a deep, unsettling feeling took root in Itachi's heart. A chilling suspicion arose: Were they already trapped within an illusion?

"What is this feeling?!" Itachi thought, his mind racing behind a carefully maintained mask of calm. He frowned slightly, his gaze sharpening to a razor's edge. This man, Aizen, was unfathomable, hiding depths of power Itachi could not yet grasp.

Beside him, Kisame's face was a thundercloud, his eyes burning with pure, unadulterated rage. Aizen's arrogant dismissal, the way his eyes passed over him as if he were nothing, ignited the killer's instinct within him. The murderous intent swirling inside Kisame begged for release.

"Hoshigaki Kisame," Aizen stated, his voice calm and conversational, as if listing facts from a textbook. "Former shinobi of Kirigakure. Wanted by the Land of Water for the assassination of a feudal lord and destabilizing the nation's government. A bona fide S-class criminal on the Bingo Books."

He finished his recitation and his gaze, still fixed past Kisame, held a mild reproach. "Your presence is noted. However, I had not finished speaking. Would you be so kind as to remain silent?"

In that moment, Aizen's eyes shifted, and for a split second, they seemed to glow with an inner light, becoming terrifyingly intense, filled with a majestic and domineering will.

For a reason he couldn't explain, when Kisame met that gaze, a sliver of primal fear, something he had never experienced before, wormed its way into his heart.

"This guy talks too much. Let me just kill him!" Kisame growled, using anger to smother the unfamiliar feeling of dread. He swung Samehada from his back, the bandages rustling.

"Do not underestimate him. His strength is no less than your own," Itachi warned, his voice cold, but giving tacit consent to the attack.

"Good! I can already feel Samehada's excitement!" Kisame grinned, his sharp teeth on full display.

Shunshin!

In a blur of movement, Kisame vanished and reappeared directly in front of Aizen, his speed breathtaking. He swung the still-bandaged Samehada in a brutal, horizontal slash aimed at decapitating Aizen.

Aizen merely raised his eyes, his expression one of mild boredom. He brought Kyōka Suigetsu up in a casual, almost lazy parry.

CLANG!

A sharp, metallic ring echoed as the two legendary blades collided, sending a visible shockwave of air pulsing outwards from the point of impact. The violent wind whipped at their Akatsuki cloaks, making the red clouds dance.

"My Samehada wasn't made for killing mere humans!" Kisame sneered, exerting more force. With a sharp tug, he pulled his sword back, and all the bandages wrapping it unraveled and fell away.

Rip! Shing!

As the bandages fell, Samehada's true form was revealed—a monstrous, living weapon covered in sharp, scale-like spikes. These spikes grated against the smooth blade of Kyōka Suigetsu, sending a shower of bright sparks flying into the air.

"Samehada can shave anything!" Kisame roared, putting his full weight into another powerful swing. Using the momentum of the clash, he pushed off and leaped back, putting several meters between himself and Aizen.

A faint glint of interest finally appeared in Aizen's eyes. Kisame's raw physical power was indeed formidable, and that strange sword of his possessed a unique, hungry energy he hadn't encountered before.

"It seems I underestimated you, Hoshigaki Kisame," Aizen conceded, holding Kyōka Suigetsu at the ready. "It appears every member of this 'Akatsuki' possesses unique abilities."

He stood calmly, his coat fluttering gently in the breeze, confronting the two S-rank rogue ninjas with an aura of detached superiority.

While the three titans faced off, the situation for Naruto grew increasingly dire. The Four Symbols Seal on his abdomen continued to erode under the relentless pressure of Aizen's lingering spiritual energy. The Nine-Tails' chakra, a viscous, blood-red aura, was beginning to boil over in earnest. If the seal broke completely, all would be lost.

Itachi and Kisame were acutely aware of this. Their mission was to capture the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki alive and intact. A broken seal and a rampaging Tailed Beast was a catastrophic failure.

"Water Style: Water Shark Bomb Technique!" Kisame formed a series of hand seals. The river beside the hill churned violently, and a massive shark-shaped projectile of water launched itself into the air, roaring as it dove toward Aizen.

Aizen did not move from his spot. He simply raised his free hand, his voice calm and clear as he recited the incantation.

"The earth of the royal land. The mask of flesh and blood. All creation, the fluttering of wings, that which bears the name of man."

"Carve the twin lotuses into the wall of blue fire, waiting in the distant sky for the fire of the abyss."

"Hadō #73: Sōren Sōkatsui!"

Twin pillars of blue-and-red fire erupted from his fingertips, spiraling together to meet the oncoming water shark.

BOOOOM!

The collision was deafening. The fully incanted Twin Lotus Blue Fire, its power vastly amplified, utterly overwhelmed the water shark. The resulting explosion of steam and concussive force sent Kisame's massive body hurtling backward through the air.

"What?!" A rare exclamation of shock escaped Uchiha Itachi's lips. The sheer power of that Kidō spell far exceeded any conventional ninjutsu he had ever witnessed.

His crimson eyes narrowed, fixing on Aizen with deadly intent. The three tomoe in his Sharingan began to spin, faster and faster, tracing a complex, esoteric pattern. With a final, decisive shift, the three tomoe bled together, morphing and solidifying into a distinct, three-bladed shuriken pattern around his pupil.

The Mangekyō Sharingan.

With his ultimate eye technique activated, Uchiha Itachi stared directly at Aizen, his voice cold and flat.

"Now you will witness the true power of our Uchiha clan's eyes."
