Chapter 106 - Chapter 106: Shattered Illusions

Chapter 106: Shattered Illusions

Uzumaki Naruto ran, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He pumped his arms and legs, pushing his body to its limit, but the distance between him and his pursuer felt nonexistent. It was a futile effort, like a leaf trying to outrun a storm.

The difference in their power was absolute. It was the chasm between the sun and the earth, a gap so vast it could never be crossed. Naruto was a genin, all raw potential and untamed spirit. The man following him was something else entirely. With Jiraiya immobilized and unable to intervene, Aizen Sōsuke was finally free to claim his prize. After pinpointing Naruto's location with his immense spiritual pressure, he had shaken off the few Konoha shinobi still able to give chase in an instant, arriving before the boy with an unsettling, silent grace.

"Naruto Uzumaki," Aizen's voice was calm, almost conversational, as he held his sealed Zanpakutō loosely at his side. He seemed to walk on the air itself, each step bringing him closer. "The boy who holds the Nine-Tails. It seems you conceal many secrets."

Naruto skidded to a halt, his breath catching in his throat. He turned, his wide blue eyes staring in disbelief. "Aizen... classmate?!"

He looked at the figure approaching him. This was the same person who had shared ramen with him, who had given him a quiet word of encouragement after a failed training session. But the gentle boy from the academy was gone. In his place was a man who radiated a pressure so heavy it felt difficult to breathe. Naruto's instincts screamed at him to run, but a deeper, more confused part of him was frozen solid. He couldn't reconcile the two images. He didn't want to believe that the kind Aizen could be the one to betray Konoha, to kill the Third Hokage.

If Orochimaru had lit the fuse on Konoha's destruction, then Aizen was the one who had detonated the bomb. He had slain the Hokage, defeated Kakashi and Guy, and unleashed the One-Tail upon the village. Every action he took plunged Konoha deeper into chaos. And now, with the giant toad Gamabunta being pushed back by the rampaging Shukaku, and Jiraiya struggling to enter Sage Mode, the situation was more desperate than ever.

"Uzumaki Naruto. We meet again," Aizen said, finally coming to a stop before him.

The smile on Aizen's handsome face was the same one Naruto remembered from the last two months. In a flash, memories flooded Naruto's mind: Aizen patiently explaining a difficult concept, Aizen standing beside him during the Chunin Exams, Aizen's quiet presence that had felt so reassuring. The contrast with the cold reality before him made his head spin.

"Why?!" Naruto finally burst out, his voice cracking with emotion. "Why do you look so cold now? Was everything before... was it all a lie? A disguise?"

Aizen tilted his head slightly, his smile not faltering. "Do I usually appear so cruel, then?"

His tone was light, almost amused, which only made Naruto angrier.

"It's terrible!" Naruto yelled, his fists clenching so tight his knuckles turned white. "Even your eyes... they're so cold! You're not the Aizen I knew!"

As he met Aizen's gaze, a shiver wracked Naruto's body. He felt like he was being judged by something far greater than himself, a soul of such immense stature that his own felt insignificant. His back was soaked with a cold sweat, and each breath became a laborious effort. A single look from Aizen carried the crushing pressure of the deepest ocean trench.

"'Not the Aizen you knew anymore'?" Aizen took a single, deliberate step forward. A faint, mocking smirk played on his lips. "A regrettable misconception, Naruto Uzumaki. That boy you thought you knew... he never existed in the first place."

His words were a final, brutal verdict, shattering the last fragile hope in Naruto's heart. As Aizen advanced, a profound sense of despair, deeper than any he had ever felt, began to swallow Naruto whole. It was a feeling of utter powerlessness. Fear, panic, and hopelessness warred in his wide blue eyes, and he couldn't stop a slight tremble from running through his limbs.

He was just a genin. The vast chakra reserves of his Uzumaki heritage were a mere drop in the ocean compared to the vast, terrifying power Aizen now radiated. In that moment, Naruto felt like an insect before a god. All the potential in the world meant nothing if it couldn't be realized in time.

"You... you liar!" Naruto roared, his face flushing red with a mixture of heartbreak and fury. "How can you say something so horrible? All this time, we accepted you! We saw you as one of us! Even Kakashi-sensei said you were Konoha's future, a genius who could rival Sasuke!"

His emotions, strained by the day's horrors and this ultimate betrayal, finally snapped. The image of the friend he thought he had was being torn to pieces before his eyes.

"Uzumaki Naruto, your perspective was flawed from the very beginning," Aizen replied, his voice still infuriatingly calm. He seemed in no rush, like a cat toying with its prey. "It is a fundamental principle for those who seek to rule. The easiest people to control are those who harbor affection for you."

"You betrayed everyone's trust! And you're saying it like it's some kind of lesson? It's disgusting!" Naruto spat, his whole body trembling with rage. Aizen's cold, logical words were dismantling everything Naruto believed about friendship and loyalty.

Aizen simply smiled and gave a slight, dismissive shake of his head. "How amusing you are, Naruto Uzumaki."

He paused, his gaze intensifying, seeming to see straight into Naruto's soul. "You accused me of betraying trust, which means you inherently believe my previous actions were a deception."

His voice took on a hypnotic, compelling quality, making the twisted logic sound almost reasonable. "Then, tell me, during these past two months... when I spoke with you, trained beside you, shared meals with you... was any of that a lie? Or was the 'me' you chose to see simply the one you wanted to see all along?"
