Chapter 8 - THE AFTERMATCH

Akilah's heart was still racing as she leaned against the door, her mind reeling with questions. Who was Victoria? What did she want? And what was Ethan's past that he had never told her about?

She took a deep breath and tried to calm down, but her mind was a jumble of emotions. She didn't know what to think or feel. Part of her wanted to believe that Ethan was a good person, that he would never hurt her intentionally. But another part of her was screaming warnings, telling her to get out while she still could.

Akilah pushed herself away from the door and walked over to the couch, collapsing onto the cushions. She felt exhausted, emotionally drained. She didn't know what to do next.

As she sat there, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw Ethan's name on the screen. She hesitated, unsure of what to do. Should she answer it? Should she block his number?

In the end, she decided to answer it. "What do you want, Ethan?" she asked, her voice cold and distant.

"Akilah, I'm so sorry," Ethan said, his voice filled with emotion. "I never meant to hurt you. I never meant for you to find out about Victoria."

Akilah's grip on the phone tightened. "What is there to know about Victoria?" she asked, her voice firm.

Ethan sighed, and Akilah could hear the pain in his voice. "Victoria and I were married a few years ago. We were young and stupid, and we thought we were in love. But it was a toxic relationship, Akilah. She was manipulative and controlling, and I didn't realize it until it was almost too late."

Akilah's eyes widened as she listened. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I mean that she was using me, Akilah," Ethan said, his voice filled with shame. "She was using me to get money and status, and I was too blind to see it. But I woke up, and I left her. I filed for divorce, and I've been trying to move on with my life."

Akilah's mind was reeling. She didn't know what to believe. Part of her wanted to believe Ethan, wanted to believe that he was telling the truth. But another part of her was screaming warnings, telling her to be careful.

"What does Victoria want?" Akilah asked, her voice firm.

"She wants revenge," Ethan said, his voice low and urgent. "She wants to hurt me, and she sees you as a way to do it."

Akilah's heart sank, she knew that she was in danger but she didn't know how to escape. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare, and she didn't know how to wake up. The fear was creeping in, making her hands shake and her breath catch in her throat.

She tried to think clearly, to come up with a plan, but her mind was a jumble of emotions. She knew she had to get out of there, to get away from Ethan and Victoria and the whole toxic situation.

Just as she was trying to gather her thoughts, her phone buzzed in her hand. It was Ethan.

Akilah's heart sank. She knew that she was in danger, and she didn't know how to escape. She felt like she was trapped in a game, and she didn't know the rules.

"Ethan, I need some time to think," she said, her voice firm but shaking. "I need to process everything that's happened."

Ethan's voice was laced with desperation. "Akilah, please don't shut me out. I need to see you, to explain everything in person."

Akilah hesitated, unsure of what to do. Part of her wanted to see him, to hear him explain everything and make her feel better. But another part of her was screaming warnings, telling her to stay away.

"I'll call you tomorrow, Ethan," she said, her voice firm. "I need some time to think."

Ethan's voice was laced with defeat. "Okay, Akilah. I'll wait for your call."

Akilah hung up the phone and collapsed onto the couch, her mind reeling with thoughts and emotions. She felt like she was lost in a sea of uncertainty, with no lifeline to clove to.

As she sat there, her eyes fell on a piece of paper on the coffee table. It was a note she had written to herself earlier that day, a reminder to trust her instincts. She picked it up and read the words, her eyes filling with tears.

"Trust yourself," the note said. "You know what's best for you."

Akilah took a deep breath, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She knew what she had to do. She had to get out of there, to get away from Ethan and Victoria and the whole toxic situation.

She stood up and started packing a bag, her mind racing with plans and possibilities. She would go to a friend's house, or maybe a hotel. She would disappear for a while, until she could figure out what to do next.

As she packed, Akilah felt a sense of empowerment wash over her. She was taking control of her life, of her own destiny. She was not going to let Ethan or Victoria or anyone else control her anymore.

But just as she was finishing up her packing, Akilah heard a knock at the door. She froze, her heart racing with fear. Who was it? Ethan? Victoria? Someone else?

Akilah slowly made her way to the door, her heart pounding in her chest. She looked through the peephole, and her eyes widened in shock.

It was Victoria.

Victoria's smile was like a snake oil, slimy and fake, as she stood outside Akilah's door. Akilah's heart was racing, her mind screaming warnings. What was she doing here?

Akilah took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. She didn't want to let Victoria know that she was scared. She didn't want to give her the satisfaction.

"Can I help you?" Akilah asked, her voice firm but polite, as she opened the door slightly.

Victoria's smile grew wider, her eyes sparkling with malice. "Oh, I think you know why I'm here, Akilah," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "I'm here to talk about Ethan."

Akilah's grip on the door tightened. She didn't want to let Victoria in, didn't want to hear what she had to say. But a part of her was curious, a part of her wanted to know what Victoria was planning.

"What about Ethan?" Akilah asked, her voice firm.

Victoria's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Oh, I think you know, Akilah," she said, her voice low and husky. "Ethan and I have a history. A history that you're just a small part of."

Akilah's heart sank. She didn't want to hear this, didn't want to know what Victoria was going to tell her.

But Victoria just kept talking, her words like a slow-moving poison, seeping into Akilah's mind and spreading doubt and fear.

"Ethan and I were meant to be together," Victoria said, her voice filled with conviction. "We were meant to be a team, to take on the world together. But he left me, Akilah. He left me for you."

Akilah's mind was reeling. She didn't know what to believe, didn't know what to do. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare, and she didn't know how to wake up.

Victoria's words were like a cold wind, blowing away the last of Akilah's doubts and fears. She knew that she had to get out of there, had to get away from Victoria and Ethan and the whole toxic situation.

"I'm not going to let you do this, Victoria," Akilah said, her voice firm. "I'm not going to let you manipulate me, or Ethan, or anyone else. You need to leave."

Victoria's smile faltered, her eyes flashing with anger. "You'll regret this, Akilah," she said, her voice low and menacing. "You'll regret ever getting involved with Ethan."

Akilah's heart was racing, but she stood her ground. She was not going to let Victoria intimidate her, not going to let her control her.

"I'm not afraid of you, Victoria," Akilah said, her voice firm. "I'm not afraid of you, or Ethan, or anyone else. I'm taking control of my life, and I'm not going to let anyone else control me."

Victoria's face twisted with rage, and she turned and walked away, leaving Akilah shaking with fear and determination. Akilah knew that she had to get out of there, had to get away from Victoria and Ethan and the whole toxic situation.

She grabbed her bag and ran out of the apartment, not stopping until she was safe in a taxi, heading to a friend's house. She knew that she had to get away, had to get safe.

As the taxi drove away, Akilah felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was taking control of her life, was taking back control.

But as she looked out the window, she saw Victoria standing on the sidewalk, watching her go. Akilah's heart sank. She knew that this was far from over.
