Chapter 10 - BENEATH THE SURFACE

Akilah's eyes locked onto Ethan's, and she felt a chill run down her spine. He was still out there, still a threat to her safety. Toya quickly ushered her inside, and they watched as the police took Victoria away.

Akilah breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a sense of justice. But she knew that Ethan was still a problem, and she needed to be careful.

Toya put a reassuring arm around her shoulders. "You're safe now, Akilah," she said. "The police will take care of Ethan and Victoria."

Akilah nodded, trying to calm down. She knew Toya was right, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that Ethan was still watching her.

The police came to the safe house, and Akilah gave her statement. She told them everything, from the moment she met Ethan to the present day.

The police listened intently, taking notes and asking questions. When Akilah finished, they nodded and told her that they would do everything they could to protect her.

Akilah felt a sense of relief, knowing that the police were on her side. But she knew that she couldn't stay in the safe house forever.

She needed to figure out what to do next, how to protect herself from Ethan and Victoria. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was determined to take back control of her life.

Toya helped her make plans, and Akilah started to feel a sense of hope. Maybe she could get through this, maybe she could come out on top.

But as she looked out of the window, she saw Ethan's car driving by. Her heart sank, and she knew that this was far from over.

Ethan was still out there, still a threat to her safety. And Akilah knew that she needed to be careful, to stay one step ahead of him.

The chase had begun, and Akilah was ready to run.

Akilah's feet pounded the pavement as she ran, her heart racing with fear. She could hear Ethan's footsteps behind her, his heavy breathing getting closer and closer. Toya was running beside her, her eyes wide with terror.

They had to get away, had to escape. Akilah's mind was racing, trying to think of a plan. Where could they go? Who could they trust?

The police were on their way, but would they arrive in time? Akilah's arm was burning with pain, and she knew she couldn't keep running for much longer.

Suddenly, Toya pulled her into a narrow alleyway. They stopped, gasping for breath, and listened. The footsteps had stopped, and the night was silent.

Akilah peeked around the corner, her eyes scanning the street. Ethan was nowhere to be seen, but she knew he was still out there, waiting for her.

Toya grabbed her hand, and they started running again. They dodged through alleys and side streets, trying to lose Ethan in the maze of buildings.

As they ran, Akilah's phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, and saw a message from an unknown number. "I'm coming for you, Akilah. You can't hide."

Akilah's heart sank. Ethan had her phone number, and he knew where she was.

They kept running, their feet pounding the pavement. Akilah's lungs were burning, and her arm was throbbing with pain. But she knew she couldn't stop, not yet.

Finally, they saw a taxi cab pulling up to the curb. Akilah flagged it down, and they jumped in.

"Where to?" the driver asked, looking at them with concern.

Akilah hesitated, unsure of where to go. But then she remembered a place, a place where Ethan would never think to look for her.

"Take us to the airport," she said, her voice firm.

The driver nodded, and the taxi pulled away from the curb. Akilah looked out the window, watching as the city streets blurred together. She knew she wasn't safe yet, but she was one step closer to escaping Ethan's grasp.

As they drove, Akilah's mind was racing. She had to get out of the country, had to disappear. But how? She didn't have a passport, and she didn't have any money.

The taxi pulled up to the airport, and Akilah paid the driver. They got out, and Akilah looked around, trying to get her bearings.

And that's when she saw him. Ethan, standing at the edge of the crowd, his eyes fixed on her.

Akilah's heart sank. The chase was far from over.
