Chapter 83: The Shane Investigation - Part 1

POV: Sam Barton

The infiltration happens at 2 PM on a Tuesday while Shane's teaching Advanced European History to juniors, and my Phasing clone slips through his apartment wall like smoke through screen door.

Shane's place is disturbingly normal from the outside—faculty housing provided by the school, generic furniture, nothing screaming "dangerous Expression witch planning to wake ancient immortal." But my clone's supernatural senses detect magical residue coating every surface like invisible film.

The research is harder to hide.

Papers cover Shane's desk in organized chaos—maps of Virginia marked with burial sites, genealogies tracking The Five hunter bloodlines, and most disturbingly, a folder labeled "Anomalies and System-Wielders."

My clone phases through the locked desk drawer, extracting documents while my primary body sits in calculus class maintaining perfect cover.

The photos make my blood run cold.

Pictures of me—training with my clones at the quarry, walking with Caroline at school, even sleeping at my estate taken from distance with telephoto lens. Each photo annotated in Shane's precise handwriting:

"The anomaly—system-wielder outside natural order. Capabilities: shadow manifestation, damage relocation, supernatural resistance. Potential key to Silas awakening or obstacle to eliminate. Parents' research suggests connection to ancient precursor. Requires further study."

Shane's been stalking me for weeks, cataloging my abilities, assessing my threat level.

My clone photographs everything, his intangible form leaving no trace of intrusion.

The Silas research is extensive—ancient texts about immortality spells, references to Qetsiyah the witch who created true immortality, diagrams of what looks like mystical prisons. And repeatedly, mentions of "The Five"—vampire hunters created to guard Silas's tomb.

[INTELLIGENCE GATHERED: SHANE'S SILAS PLAN]

I pull my clone back before Shane returns, compiling the evidence for alliance review.

The emergency meeting happens at Alaric's apartment after school, and Alaric's face goes pale as he examines Shane's research photos.

"The Five," Alaric breathes, touching symbols my clone photographed. "I've seen these marks before. Ancient vampire hunters created by a powerful witch named Qetsiyah to find and guard Silas's prison. Each hunter carries a tattoo that grows with every vampire they kill, eventually revealing the location of Silas's tomb."

"Why would Shane care about vampire hunters from two thousand years ago?" Bonnie asks.

"Because if he's researching The Five, he's looking for Silas's location," Alaric explains. "And according to legend, Silas was buried with the cure to vampirism—the only thing that could make him mortal before killing him."

Rebekah, who's been listening from the doorway, straightens immediately. "The cure exists? An actual cure for vampirism?"

"According to mythology," Alaric hedges. "Silas was the first immortal—achieved true immortality through a spell. When his enemies couldn't kill him, they buried him alive with the cure, hoping someday someone would make him mortal so he could finally die."

Rebekah's expression transforms with desperate hope. "I've wanted to be human for nine hundred years. If this cure exists, I want it."

"Rebekah," I caution, "we don't even know if it's real or if there's only one dose—"

"I don't care," Rebekah interrupts. "Humanity is worth fighting for. If Shane knows where Silas is buried, I need that information."

Bonnie interrupts the cure debate with more urgent concern. "Sam, I need to examine Shane's magical signature. If he's practicing dark magic to wake Silas, we need to know what we're dealing with."

The magical analysis happens that night at the Bennett house, and Bonnie channels her ancestors with intensity I haven't seen since Esther's awakening.

Grams's spirit manifests visibly, her translucent form radiating urgency. "Sam Barton, that man is channeling death itself."

"Explain," I request.

"Expression magic," Grams says, and Bonnie gasps. "The darkest form of witchcraft—it doesn't draw power from nature or ancestors, but from death and sacrifice. Every person who dies near an Expression witch feeds their power. Shane isn't just researching Silas—he's building magical strength through death to perform the awakening ritual."

My tactical mind processes the implications. "How many deaths would he need?"

"Dozens at minimum," Bonnie replies, her face pale. "Expression requires massive sacrifice—twelve hybrids, twelve witches, twelve humans traditionally. Shane's been planning this for years."

"Then we stop him before he gets that far," I decide. "Surveillance escalates to active intervention. Shane doesn't get to murder dozens of people to wake an ancient monster."

That night, I brief the full alliance at the Salvatore boarding house on everything we've discovered.

"Silas," I explain to the assembled group. "The first immortal. Created true immortality two thousand years ago, then was betrayed and buried alive by his enemies. He's been conscious in a tomb for twenty centuries, unable to move or die or escape. And Shane wants to wake him."

"Why?" Stefan asks the obvious question.

"That's what we need to discover," I reply. "But Expression magic requires death—lots of it. Shane's planning mass murder to fuel the awakening ritual."

Caroline squeezes my hand, her fear palpable. "Senior year and ancient evil immortals. Classic us."

She's joking to cope with terror, and I don't blame her. Silas represents a threat beyond even Klaus—an immortal witch who's been trapped in darkness for two millennia, probably insane with rage and suffering.

"We prevent the awakening," I decide. "Monitor Shane continuously, intercept any Expression sacrifices, and find Silas's tomb before Shane does. If we control the location, we control whether he wakes up."

Rebekah speaks up from her position near the fireplace. "And the cure? If it exists in Silas's tomb, what happens to it?"

The room goes quiet—that's a question with no easy answer. Who deserves the cure to vampirism? Elena who never wanted to be vampire? Rebekah who's suffered for centuries? Some other vampire desperate for humanity?

"First we prevent Shane from killing dozens of people," I reply. "Then we discuss the cure's fate if it actually exists."

It's diplomatic deflection, but it'll have to do for now.
