Chapter 82: Senior Year Begins
POV: Sam Barton
Professor Atticus Shane introduces himself during first period history with the kind of engaging charm that immediately sets off every alarm my Sensory clone possesses.
"Ancient civilizations believed in immortality," Shane lectures, moving through the classroom with practiced ease. "Egyptians preserved bodies for the afterlife. Greeks sought ambrosia from gods. And various cultures developed rituals claiming to grant eternal life."
His eyes linger on me, Bonnie, and Caroline—supernatural-aware students whose heartbeats apparently register differently to whatever senses he's using.
My Sensory clone detects controlled heartbeat, deliberate eye movements tracking specific students, and body language suggesting Shane knows exactly who in this classroom has supernatural connections.
"Mr. Barton," Shane calls on me. "Your parents were archaeologists, correct? Did they ever encounter immortality myths in their research?"
The question's too targeted to be casual.
"They studied ancient civilizations," I reply carefully. "Myths are just stories people tell themselves."
Shane's smile suggests he doesn't believe me. "Are they? Throughout history, myths have proven surprisingly accurate. Vampires, werewolves, witches—all dismissed as folklore until proven real."
Several students shift uncomfortably. The supernatural revelation three months ago hasn't made everyone comfortable discussing it openly yet.
After class, Shane approaches me directly. "Mr. Barton, I've heard interesting things about you. Perhaps we could discuss your parents' archaeological work? I'm particularly interested in their research about immortality spells."
My Mind Shield clone detects subtle compulsion attempt—not vampire compulsion, but something else. Magical influence trying to make me more agreeable, more willing to share information.
"My parents' work is private," I reply, the Mind Shield blocking his mental manipulation. "But I'm sure the library has resources if you're interested in mythology."
Shane's eyes flicker with surprise—he'd expected the compulsion to work.
"Of course," he says smoothly. "I'll check the library. Welcome to senior year, Sam."
After he leaves, I immediately text the alliance group chat: "Emergency meeting. New history teacher is supernatural threat."
The meeting happens at my estate that evening with core alliance members—Bonnie, Caroline, Damon, Stefan, Tyler, and Liz.
"Professor Shane attempted magical compulsion on me during class," I explain. "Subtle influence magic trying to make me share information about my parents' research. My Mind Shield clone blocked it, but he's definitely hunting supernatural intelligence."
"What does he want?" Bonnie asks.
"That's what we need to discover," I reply. "I'm establishing surveillance—my Sensory and Mind Shield clones will monitor him continuously while we maintain school normalcy."
Damon volunteers to "have a chat" with Shane, which is code for threatening violence until information appears.
"Not yet," I decide. "Let's observe first, see what he's after. If he's just curious professor, we don't want to escalate unnecessarily. If he's genuine threat, we need intelligence before acting."
Liz coordinates official investigation through law enforcement channels. "I'll run background check, see what records reveal about Atticus Shane."
Over the next week, my clones compile disturbing profile:
Shane moves through Mystic Falls with purpose, visiting historical sites, photographing landmarks, and asking questions about supernatural activity under guise of academic research.
My Sensory clone detects him making phone calls in languages I don't recognize—dead languages according to Bonnie's analysis, suggesting Shane's connected to very old supernatural forces.
And my Mind Shield clone catches him attempting compulsion on other students, fishing for information about vampires, witches, and specifically about "anomalies with shadow powers."

One week into surveillance, my Sensory clone observes Shane making phone call from his apartment that makes my blood run cold.
"Yes, they're all here," Shane says into his phone. "The vampire brothers, the Bennett witch, and the anomaly with the shadow powers. Mystic Falls has everything we need. Silas's awakening proceeds as planned."
Silas.
The name hits me like physical blow—I'd almost forgotten about Silas from the show's later seasons. The immortal being whose tomb contains both him and the cure for vampirism. The threat that makes Klaus look manageable by comparison.
And Shane knows about him. Is actively working to wake him.
I call emergency alliance meeting immediately.
"Silas," I explain to the assembled group. "According to supernatural lore, he's the first immortal—a witch who achieved true immortality two thousand years ago, then was buried alive by enemies who couldn't kill him. His tomb supposedly contains the cure for vampirism."
"And Shane wants to wake him," Bonnie realizes, her face going pale. "Sam, if Silas is real and gets free, he'll be more powerful than any Original."
"Which is why we need to stop Shane before he succeeds," I reply. "Starting tonight, we escalate surveillance to active intervention. Shane doesn't get to wake ancient immortal beings without the Clone Sovereign's permission."
Caroline grips my hand tightly. "Senior year just got complicated."
"It always was going to," I reply. "Summer peace was temporary. Now we deal with whatever Shane's planning and make sure Silas stays buried."
My six clones manifest fully, ready for whatever comes next.
