"Yeah," he murmured. "I know."

"But I can't go."

"Uhnnn?" Ray voiced out in surprise. "Why?"

"Look at them all — Grandma, the kids from the orphanage.

I won't be able to leave them to their death."

He looked toward the closed door, picturing their tired faces, the way they trusted the world because they had so little.

"Then take them with you," Ray said.

"How will I do that? No one will get up and leave their home just because a ten‑year‑old told them the city is about to get destroyed," he said.

His voice tightened. The thought of telling them filled him with a cold, helpless anger.

"Tell Grandma. She has seen your powers and what you're capable of — she'll believe you," Ray said, wings fluttering anxiously.

"You must be kidding me. If I tell Grandma she'll tell everyone and try to save everyone. That's how nice Grandma is.

But no one will believe her; she might even be arrested for trying to spread panic — and then what?"

The picture of Page standing in the square shouting for people to flee made his throat close.

"And I can't force her to get me and the children out of here.

It'll break her."

His words were small, but full of bruised love. He could almost see her — hands shaking as she gathered everyone, refusing to leave any behind.

"And what about the nice man down the street, Hunter Tim, Lady Lisa who comes to play with us sometimes?

We can't just let them all die."

He named them like anchors to a life he couldn't abandon.

"We have to find another way — a way to save everyone and kill that damn beast."

He said it like a promise, and for a second his small chest tightened with something fiercer than fear — a stubborn, aching resolve.

Ray hovered silent for a moment, the air between them heavy with the weight of the choice.

"I knew you would say that," Ray voiced with a sigh, but I still hoped.

Joshua turned, confusion on his face. "What do you mean?"

Ray's expression grew earnest. "You're Joshua Vail — the man who rose up because you couldn't stand the way people were treated. The man who found joy in seeing others happy, who solved the world's problems while neglecting his own dreams and wishes."

"You're not the kind of person who will leave people to die."

Joshua swallowed. Those words landed like stones in a quiet pond.

"I had already expected this answer," Ray went on, softer now. He hovered closer, the little projection's glow steady. "And I have made adequate preparation already."
