Chapter 158 - Chapter 158: Debts and Partings

Chapter 158: Debts and Partings

Kagenori's awareness snapped back to the physical world, the oppressive darkness of the seal replaced by the muted light of the forest clearing. He took a sharp, controlled breath, the transition between realms always a disorienting jolt. A few feet away, Uzumaki Miyuki lay unconscious on the mossy ground, but the violent, crimson cloak of the Nine-Tails' chakra was gone. Her breathing was even, her body restored to its normal state.

In a flash of yellow, Namikaze Minato was at her side, his usual calm composure broken by the raw worry etched on his face. He gently gathered her into his arms, his touch protective.

Kagenori turned his head, his face a mask of placid duty, and addressed the Hokage. "The situation is stabilized, Hokage-sama. The Nine-Tails is fully contained."

Sarutobi Hiruzen let out a long, weary sigh, the weight of the night's events seeming to settle on his shoulders. "Retrieve Lady Mito's body with the utmost respect. We will return her to Konoha. Minato, you are responsible for Miyuki's care. The rest of you," he commanded, his voice hardening as he addressed the assembled ANBU, "erase all traces of our presence here. The success of this transfer and the identity of the new Jinchuriki are Konoha's highest secret. It does not leave this clearing."

The ANBU shinobi moved with silent efficiency, beginning their work of concealment.

From the periphery, Danzo watched, his single visible eye calculating. As he moved to depart with his Root operatives, his path intersected with Kagenori's. He paused for the briefest moment. "Adequately handled," he murmured, the words less a compliment and more an acknowledgment of a tool performing to specification. Then he was gone, melting into the shadows with his followers.

Minato, carefully lifting Miyuki, approached Kagenori as he passed. His expression was conflicted, a mix of personal gratitude and profound ideological discomfort. "Thank you, Kagenori. For her."

Kagenori's gaze was flat, devoid of any warmth. "I was following the Hokage's order. Nothing more." The dismissal was clear, and Minato, understanding the unbridgeable gap between them, simply nodded and continued on his way.

The first hints of dawn were staining the sky when Kagenori finally pushed open the door to his home. The interior was dark and silent. It took his sharp eyes only a moment to adjust and find her: Uzumaki Kushina, sitting motionless on the sofa in the gloom, her vibrant hair the only splash of color in the shadows.

"Kagenori," her voice was small, barely a whisper. "You're back. Is it… is it over?"

"It's over," he confirmed, his own voice low and steady.

He saw her shoulders tense. "And… Grandma Mito…?"

"She has passed on."

A full-body shudder wracked Kushina's frame. She bit down on her lower lip, hard, trying to trap the sob building in her throat. "I see…" she managed, the words trembling.

In two strides, Kagenori was before her. He didn't offer empty words. Instead, he simply gathered her into his arms, pulling her tight against his chest. "You don't have to be strong for me," he murmured into her hair. "Not here. Not ever."

That was all the permission she needed. The dam broke. She buried her face in the fabric of his flak jacket, her hands fisting tightly into the material as if he were her only anchor in a storm-tossed sea. The quiet sobs escalated into great, heaving cries of grief, a raw and painful sound that filled the quiet room. Kagenori held her, his hand moving in slow, steady circles on her back, a silent bastion against her sorrow. Uzumaki Mito had been her last blood relative, a grandmother and a guide. Despite their disagreement over the Jinchuriki fate, the love had been real, and its loss was a profound wound.

She cried until exhaustion finally claimed her, her tears staining his jacket as she fell into a fitful sleep in his embrace. Carefully, he lifted her and carried her to bed, tucking her in before retreating to the main room.

Alone, he opened his mental interface. The system prompt glowed before him.

[Witnessed the passing of Uzumaki Mito. Reward: 5 Witness Points.]

[Major Historical Deviation: Original Nine-Tails Jinchuriki altered. Additional Reward: 1,000 Witness Points.]

[Total Witness Points: 6,005.]

A significant haul. The foundation for his next move was being laid, point by bloody point.

Days later, a small, private funeral was held for Uzumaki Mito. Secrecy dictated the attendees: Sarutobi Hiruzen, Danzo, the new Jinchuriki Uzumaki Miyuki and her protector Minato, Kushina and Kagenori, a grief-stricken Tsunade who had rushed back to the village, and a handful of Mito's distant descendants.

Kushina stood close to Kagenori's side, her eyes red-rimmed but dry as she stared at the tombstone. Her hand was clasped tightly in his.

After paying their respects, Kagenori turned to Miyuki. "A moment of your time? Alone."

Miyuki glanced at Minato, who gave her an encouraging smile. "I'll be right here," he said.

Kagenori squeezed Kushina's hand. "I have a debt to settle. Wait for me."

A flicker of understanding passed over Kushina's face. She nodded. "Okay."

He led Miyuki to a secluded spot away from the mourners. "How are you adjusting?" he asked, his tone neutral, almost clinical.

"The chakra flow feels… heavy. Restricted. But otherwise, I am physically well," Miyuki replied. "What did you wish to discuss?"

"A gift. From Kushina and myself." Without further preamble, the Mangekyō Sharingan bloomed in his eyes. "We are in your debt."

"Sealing Jutsu: Kyozetsu Imprint!"

The pattern in his left eye spun violently, and a single, vivid trail of blood trickled from its corner. Simultaneously, the same Mangekyō pattern flashed for an instant within the depths of Miyuki's left eye before fading from view.

She gasped, a hand flying to her eye as a sharp, fleeting pain lanced through it. "What was that?"

"A one-time ocular seal," Kagenori explained, wiping the blood from his cheek. "I have implanted the power of my left eye's Mangekyō ability, Kyozetsu, into your own. The trigger condition is the imminent threat of your death. Should that occur, the seal will activate automatically, granting you three minutes of absolute rejection against any and all foreign chakra—ninjutsu and genjutsu. It will not save you from a blade, but it will negate any technique used to kill you."

Miyuki looked at him, a complex emotion in her gaze. "Kagenori, you don't owe me this. Our agreement was a transaction. I accepted my role freely."

"The agreement was made before you became Kushina's friend," he countered, his voice softening a fraction. "That changes the nature of it. You are no longer just a asset in a deal. You are her friend. Therefore, you are under my protection. This is not merely compensation; it is a guarantee for Kushina's peace of mind, and for the preservation of your friendship."

A small, sad smile touched Miyuki's lips. "You truly love her, don't you?"

Kagenori did not hesitate. "She is the reason for everything. I would burn the world to ash for her." He offered her a slight, genuine nod. "This matter is concluded. Minato is waiting for you, and Kushina for me. Farewell."

He turned and walked back to where Kushina stood. She slipped her hand back into his, the simple contact a silent communication of trust and understanding.

Miyuki watched them go, seeing the way Kagenori's imposing, cold demeanor subtly shifted when he was near Kushina, the way her presence alone seemed to gentle the sharp edges of his soul. She felt a pang of wistful envy.

Then she turned and saw Minato waiting for her patiently, his love for her clear and unwavering in his bright blue eyes. She smiled. She had her own happiness, different, but no less real.

Two couples, bound by love and fate, parted ways under the setting sun, each walking their own path back into the heart of the village, and into an uncertain future.
