Chapter 157: The Prisoner and the Warden
The world dissolved into a cage of dripping water and cold, oppressive darkness. Kagenori's consciousness solidified within the mindscape, his form materializing before the colossal, seething form of the Nine-Tails. The great beast strained against the adamantine chains binding it to the massive, barred gate, its raw hatred a physical pressure in the air.
The fox's struggles ceased for a moment as its burning crimson eyes locked onto him. Its lips pulled back in a snarl of pure, undiluted loathing.
"You," the Nine-Tails' voice boomed, echoing through the psychic space. "The stench of that cursed clan… the Mangekyō Sharingan. To think I would be forced to look upon it again here."
Kagenori met its gaze, his expression one of utter dispassion. The swirling patterns of his Mangekyō were calm and steady. "Is it so strange that I am here? This changes nothing for you."
"Do you believe you can help this wretch cage me? Do not dream of it, Uchiha brat!" The Nine-Tails roared, its chakra flaring. With a deafening crack, one of the three remaining chains holding it snapped.
There was no time for debate. Kagenori's Mangekyō whirled into a violent spin. "Don't move."
The potent Uchiha genjutsu, amplified by the Mangekyō's power, slammed into the fox's consciousness. The beast's furious eyes glazed over, the intricate pattern of Kagenori's doujutsu superimposing itself over its own pupils, paralyzing its will.
"Now, Miyuki!" Kagenori's voice was a sharp command, cutting through the Jinchuriki's panic.
Jolted into action, Uzumaki Miyuki formed the ram seal again, her will reinforcing the failing seal. The broken chains regenerated in a flash of golden light, wrapping tightly around the Nine-Tails once more. With a final, grinding groan of immense weight, the great gate of the seal slammed shut, the lock clicking firmly into place.
The immediate crisis was over. Kagenori knew, with cold certainty, that his intervention, while decisive, had not been strictly necessary for the seal's completion. The Eight Trigrams Seal, a masterpiece of Uzumaki craftsmanship, had already done its primary work. The struggle was a result of the residual Tailed Beast chakra that had naturally leaked into Miyuki's system during the transfer—a volatile inheritance that the fox had tried to exploit to force a premature breakout. Once that chakra was exhausted, the seal would have stabilized on its own. But exhaustion could have meant a five-tailed rampage and countless deaths. His role was merely to expedite the process and minimize the collateral damage.
He released the genjutsu. The Nine-Tails blinked, its own furious eyes returning, only to find itself completely imprisoned once more. The last vestiges of its influence in Miyuki's body had been severed. A roar of pure, impotent rage shook the mindscape.
"Do not think this is over! This cage will not hold me forever! I will find a way out, and I will slaughter every last one of you!"
Kagenori ignored the tirade. He turned to Uzumaki Miyuki, his Mangekyō receding to the simpler form of a three-tomoe Sharingan. He met her gaze for a split second, casting a gentle, sleep-inducing genjutsu. Her eyes fluttered closed, and her consciousness slumped to the 'ground' of the seal, granting her a temporary respite from the psychic strain.
Only then did Kagenori turn his full attention back to the caged demon. A cold, mocking smirk touched his lips.
"Save your breath, fox. Your threats are meaningless to me. You were the pet of Uchiha Madara, the plaything of the Shodai Hokage. You have spent decades in a cage, and now you've simply been moved to a new one. What right do you have to boast?"
"Damn you, Uchiha brat!" The Nine-Tails slammed its head against the bars, the entire cage trembling. "They are dead! Their era is over!"
Kagenori's eyes flashed back into the deadly patterns of the Mangekyō. The air grew cold. "I am not an Uchiha. And if you call me that again, Kurama, I will personally hunt down and eliminate the 'child of destiny' you and the other beasts wait for."
The silence that followed was absolute. The Nine-Tails froze, its massive form rigid with shock. The fury in its eyes was replaced by a deep, unsettling confusion. "What… How can you know that name? How do you know of the child we await?!"
"'The blue-eyed youth who shall unite all things,'" Kagenori quoted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Now, test me. See if I dare."
The fox was silent for a long moment, its immense intelligence working behind its enraged facade. When it spoke again, its voice was lower, more serious, stripped of some of its performative rage. "What do you know? Where did you learn this?"
"Your questions are irrelevant," Kagenori stated flatly. "I have no obligation to satisfy your curiosity. You need only understand that I am aware of things you believed were your secrets. I know your purpose. I know your origin."
Kurama's breath hitched. "Our origin… you cannot…"
"Two words," Kagenori interrupted, his tone chillingly calm. "Jūbi."
It was as if he had struck the beast physically. The Nine-Tails recoiled, a tremor running through its entire colossal body. The look it gave Kagenori now was no longer one of simple hatred, but of profound, terrifying awe and wariness. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, broken only by the fox's ragged, disbelieving breaths.
Finally, Kurama spoke, its voice a low rumble. "So. This is the true reason you remained. You helped the Jinchuriki not out of kindness, but as a prelude to a negotiation. What is it you want to discuss?"
"Acknowledging the situation is the first step to intelligence," Kagenori replied. "I prefer to settle my debts and arrange the board to my advantage. And in this case, the arrangement I propose is for your benefit as well."
"My benefit?" Kurama scoffed, though the sound lacked its earlier conviction.
"Naturally. You are unaware, but you and your brethren have been marked. A hunter is already preparing, and in a decade or so, his gaze will fall upon you."
"To be used as a weapon? I fail to see the difference from my current state."
"The difference is annihilation," Kagenori said, his voice sharp. "The current wielder of the Rinnegan has already summoned the Gedo Statue. You know what that means. You understand the goal."
The fox's eyes widened in genuine horror. "A resurrection…? Someone seeks to revive it?!"
"Precisely. So your danger is very real. Your turn will likely come last, in approximately ten years' time."
"And you?" Kurama pressed, its focus absolute. "What is your role in this? What do you demand of me?"
"For now, nothing active," Kagenori said. "I will place a transcription seal within Miyuki's eyes. In a few years, this Jinchuriki will face a crisis. That moment is pivotal, not just for her, but for you and the child of destiny you await. I may or may not be in Konoha to intervene. When that time comes, I expect you to lend her your power. You will help her survive."
The demand was an insult to the fox's very nature. To willingly aid a human, a jailer? Its first instinct was to refuse, to roar its defiance.
Kagenori read the refusal in its eyes and met it with cold mockery. "You hesitate? Understand, this is not a request born of need. I owe a debt to this vessel, not to you. Your hatred for humanity is mirrored by my own contempt for you. If you wish to be harvested, absorbed into the Gedo Statue, and used as fuel to resurrect the Jūbi, then by all means, cling to your pride. It will be a fitting end."
The Nine-Tails was trapped, and it knew it. This human held knowledge that shattered its understanding of the world. The threat was not an empty one. It thought for a long, agonizing moment, the weight of millennia and a desperate desire for survival warring within it.
"...Very well," it finally growled, the words tasting like ash. "I will agree to your terms."
Kagenori's lip curled into a final, disdainful sneer. "Do not phrase it as if you are doing me a favor. Remember your place. You are a prisoner. I am merely the warden offering you a path to continued existence."
Before the fox could muster another furious retort, Kagenori's consciousness withdrew, dissolving from the dark, watery prison and leaving the Nine-Tails alone with its rage and a terrifying new understanding of its fate.
