Chapter 37 - The Last Sight

The Last Sight

Chapter 47

Clink.

The sound rang sharp and hollow as the metal instrument slipped from Vaelor's fingers and struck the stainless tray.

It echoed across the room-

Cold.

Empty.

Final.

Vaelor stood motionless, his body drenched in Eidolon's blood. It clung to him-thick, dark, still warm in places.

But his expression-

Remained unchanged.

Calm.

Detached.

His hand moved slowly across the table, gliding over an array of tools. Steel. Hooks. Blades. Instruments crafted not just to harm-

But to break.

His fingers hovered.

Choosing.

Then-

They stopped.

A glass jar.

Clouded.

Half-filled with a murky yellow liquid.

Vaelor picked it up, holding it loosely in one hand.

For a brief moment-

Nothing happened.

Then-

Plop.

Something dropped into the liquid.

The surface rippled outward in slow, widening circles.

Distorting.

Hiding.

Revealing.

It sank slowly-

Too slowly.

Turning as it descended.

And then-

It became clear.

Two eyes.

Eidolon's eyes.

Pale.

Lifeless.

Clouded with a fading gloss that hadn't fully accepted death.

They floated in the liquid, suspended in a quiet, sickening stillness-

Yet somehow-

They didn't feel empty.

The pupils, dull and unfocused, seemed to drift... searching.

As if they were still trying-

To see.

To understand.

To find something in the darkness that had already claimed them.

For a moment-

Even the room felt quieter.

Heavier.

Like something had just been taken that the world itself wasn't ready to let go of.

Vaelor watched them in silence.

Then-

He closed the lid.

A soft twist.

Sealing them inside.

Like the end of something that never had a chance to begin.

He placed the jar into his blood-stained bag.

Carefully.

Almost gently.

Once done, he removed his soaked clothing.

Piece by piece.

Replacing them with clean black fabric-untouched, unmarked, as if none of this had ever happened.

And then-

He began walking toward the door.

Each step steady.

Unhurried.

Measured.

He reached it-

And stopped.

Abruptly.

Silence lingered behind him.

Thick.

Oppressive.

"It's not your fault, kid."

His voice broke through it.

Calm.

Low.

Almost kind.

"Blame your destiny."

A faint smile stretched across his grotesque face.

"Once I walk out this door..."

A pause.

"...that'll be my beginning."

His eyes darkened.

"And your ending."

The words hung in the air-

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"So do us both the courtesy."

A quiet breath escaped him.

"Walk fifty steps forward from the colosseum."

Another pause.

"There's a cliff."

His smile widened slightly.

"You know what to do."

And with that-

He stepped forward.

Through the open door.

Time seemed to slow as he walked.

Each step softer than the last.

Until-

He emerged from the underground.

Dressed entirely in black.

Untouched by what lay beneath.

In his right hand-

A hat.

He placed it onto his head with quiet precision.

Then-

Snap.

The sound was soft.

But the effect-

Was not.

From the shadows behind him, something stirred.

Darkness twisted.

Gathered.

Pulled itself together like it had been waiting-

Watching-

Patient.

It rose.

Forming something unnatural.

Something wrong.

A mask.

Long. Hollow.

Shaped like a reaper's face.

Its empty gaze stretched into nothingness, its form barely stable-as though it existed between shadow and reality.

It drifted forward-

And without resistance-

Wore itself onto his face.

Perfectly.

As if it belonged there.

As if it had always been there.

Vaelor adjusted his hat slightly.

Then continued walking.

Not once looking back.

...
