Chapter 83 - Chapter 82: The Man of Destiny

Kaigaku was furious.

That bastard really was disgusting.

Just as he had predicted, Ryuya hadn't killed Iguro Obanai as promised.

And just as expected, since Kaigaku hadn't stepped in to "save" him, Iguro had started targeting him instead.

This whole mess had started several days ago.

While his master, former Thunder Hashira Kuwajima Jigoro, was instructing him in swordsmanship, Iguro Obanai had shown up with ill intent.

Kaigaku had sensed something bad was coming.

He had been right.

Iguro had openly exposed Kaigaku's actions and ugly true nature in front of Kuwajima Jigoro.

He claimed Kaigaku had betrayed his master and ancestors, was unfilial, and had even been willing to become a man-eating demon just to survive. He warned Kuwajima Jigoro to expel him immediately—otherwise, one day when the truth surfaced, regret would come too late.

That bastard hadn't left him any way out.

Kaigaku was livid.

Even if everything Iguro said was true, so what?

Was he supposed to kneel and accept it?

Impossible.

Fortunately, Kaigaku had prepared in advance. Through careful manipulation and a bit of bribery, he had convinced Iguro Obanai's cousin to slander Iguro's character instead, muddying the waters and shaking Kuwajima Jigoro's judgment.

And honestly, he had to thank Ryuya.

That idiot had turned Iguro's snake into a demon.

With a demon snake constantly wrapped around his neck, Iguro instantly became suspicious in everyone's eyes. Combined with emotional manipulation, Kuwajima Jigoro now doubted Iguro far more than Kaigaku.

This matter should have ended days ago.

But due to a temporary mission, his master had postponed dealing with it. Iguro had lingered at Peach Mountain for days, stirring up trouble and becoming increasingly annoying.

Now that Kuwajima Jigoro had returned—though still recovering from injuries—the issue would finally be settled.

And this time, Kaigaku was confident of victory.

The Demon Slayer Corps did not permit Demon Slayers to keep demons.

Iguro Obanai, you're finished.

As Iguro suddenly stopped walking, Kuwajima Jigoro, who was ahead of them, turned back in confusion.

But Iguro wasn't looking at either of them.

His gaze had landed on Kanroji Mitsuri.

At the same time, Mitsuri was staring at him.

Their eyes met.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Five.

Mitsuri's face suddenly flushed bright red. She quickly lowered her head, her entire body feeling like it was on fire.

Maintaining eye contact with a man for that long made her unbearably shy.

And… she had just bumped into him.

Should she apologize?

Iguro had been in a foul mood moments earlier, but for some reason, seeing Mitsuri eased it slightly.

He had never seen her within the Demon Slayer Corps before.

She was… different.

Seeing her sitting on the ground, he assumed he must have knocked her over. He extended his hand to help her up.

But the moment he did—

Kaburamaru moved first.

The snake around his neck flicked its tongue, its crimson eyes glowing with hunger as it lunged toward Mitsuri.

"S-Snake…!"

Kaburamaru wrapped around Mitsuri's neck, licking her face repeatedly. She froze in terror, her face draining of color.

"Kaburamaru!"

Iguro's pupils shrank. He immediately grabbed the snake's head.

"Hiss—!!"

Kaburamaru struggled violently, its eyes clearly filled with the desire to devour her.

Mitsuri, trembling and entangled, broke down in tears. "S-Save me! Get it away! It's terrifying!"

"Kaburamaru, come back!"

Iguro's voice dropped into a low growl beneath his bandages, irritation flaring in his chest.

When Kaburamaru had first been turned into a demon by Ryuya, feeding it his own blood had been enough to suppress its craving for human flesh.

But as time passed, his blood was no longer sufficient.

Kaburamaru had grown harder to control.

After a tense moment, the snake calmed slightly and slithered onto Iguro's arm.

He rolled back his sleeve and allowed it to bite down and drink his blood.

"Are you alright? I'm sorry. My companion lost control and startled you."

He extended his free hand toward Mitsuri.

Mitsuri blinked through tears before realizing the snake was no longer around her neck.

And the man before her had saved her.

"Th-Thank you… sob… sob… I thought I was going to be eaten… I was so scared…"

She grabbed his hand.

The moment her soft fingers wrapped around his, Iguro felt as if he'd been electrocuted.

His body stiffened.

Her tearful, adorable expression made him too embarrassed to meet her eyes. He subtly turned his gaze away, stealing glances from the corner of his vision instead.

Once Mitsuri stood up, he quickly—almost awkwardly—pulled his hand back.

But just as he was about to leave—

She grabbed his hand again.

"Um… wait a moment!"

Iguro paused and looked at her.

Her expression was filled with shock and disbelief.

"How can this be? It's exactly the same… Is the prophecy real? But that was a demon… Shinobu told me not to believe that nonsense…"

Mitsuri fell into complete confusion.

When she had once received a prophecy from the leader of the Eternal Paradise Cult, she had secretly looked forward to meeting the man destined for her.

But later, Shinobu Kocho had told her the truth.

The cult's leader was a demon.

Everything he said was deceptive nonsense.

And Ryuya… was also a demon.

After hearing that, Mitsuri's excitement had faded into disappointment.

She had thought the prophecy was just a cruel joke.

But now?

The scene unfolding before her matched the prophecy exactly.

How was she supposed to explain this?
