Akaza focused his aura, and a snowflake-like compass pattern bloomed beneath his feet. Setting aside past hostility, he moved to shield Doma.
"Destructive Kill: Disorder!"
Akaza surged forward with explosive speed. His bare fists, wrapped in blue shockwave energy, smashed directly into Kanae's sword aura.
Steel met flesh.
A sharp metallic clash rang out—
"Water Breathing, Second Form: Water Wheel!"
Sabito spun forward from the flank, his Nichirin Blade carving a circular arc of surging water.
"Sound Breathing, First Form: Roar!"
Tengen Uzui slammed his twin blades into the ground beneath Akaza's feet. The earth detonated, a crater erupting outward.
For a split second, Akaza was overwhelmed.
Sabito capitalized—his blade flashing cleanly across Akaza's hand and severing a finger.
"Blood Demon Art: Frozen Clouds!"
Doma's playful smile vanished as he watched Akaza take the hit. His expression turned cold.
A thick white mist of ice crystals spread like a creeping fog.
In moments, it swallowed the battlefield.
"Step back! Don't inhale the ice crystal powder!" Kanae warned.
The Hashira immediately withdrew beyond the mist's range.
Doma had intended the move to buy himself breathing room—
—but he hadn't expected Kanae to stay.
Not only did she remain, she charged forward.
Her butterfly-patterned haori fluttered wildly as she broke through the frozen haze alone, like a butterfly diving into a blazing inferno without fear.
"Flower Breathing, Sixth Form: Whirling Peach!"
Petals seemed to scatter as she spun midair, her blade painting a pink arc straight for Doma's neck.
Doma's ice crystals suppressed Breathing Techniques—
—but that only applied to human lungs.
Kanae had realized something critical.
After becoming a demon, the ice crystals no longer hindered her breathing.
Everyone else had to retreat.
She didn't.
She understood the horror of giving Doma time to unleash his Blood Demon Art.
She had to maintain relentless pressure.
"Moon Breathing, Third Form: Loathsome Moon—Chains!"
Two scarlet crescent blades swept in from either side.
Kanae's eyes widened.
"Ryuya..."
She bit her lip and forced her focus back to the battle.
She raised her blade to parry, but the howling crescents still knocked her back several steps.
"Destructive Kill: Foot Style—Flowing Light Flash!"
Akaza closed the gap instantly. His right leg glowed blue as a flurry of pinpoint kicks exploded forward.
Kanae blocked repeatedly, but each concentrated impact sent violent tremors through her arms. Her grip faltered.
Her blade nearly flew from her hands.
Thud!
Akaza's final kick blasted her backward.
She landed hard, dropping to one knee, her blade tip scraping the ground as she gasped for air.
"Destructive Kill: Disorder!"
Akaza grinned and launched himself forward again like a falling star.
Kanae suddenly raised her head.
Blood veined her vision, staining her irises crimson.
"Flower Breathing, Final Form: Equinoctial Vermilion Eye!"
As a human, using this technique risked permanent blindness.
But as a demon—
That risk vanished.
Her enhanced regenerative abilities meant she could maintain it continuously.
Her blade met Akaza head-on.
Steel clashed against flesh again and again.
After several exchanges, Akaza's eyes widened slightly.
She was keeping up with him.
"This woman... splendid!"
Excitement ignited in his gaze. He slammed his fists downward.
"Destructive Kill: Shatter Style—Myriad Leaves Flashing Willow!"
The ground shattered. Stone fragments erupted violently.
Even with her enhanced vision, Kanae was blown away.
"Kochou Kanae!"
Giyu Tomioka rushed forward, catching her by the shoulders before she collapsed.
"Thank you, Giyu-san."
Kanae coughed up blood.
Her haori was shredded in several places, crimson seeping through the fabric.
But within moments, the bleeding stopped.
The advantage of being a demon.
The Hashira exhaled collectively when they saw she was alive.
Moments earlier, the ice mist had made rescue nearly impossible.
They had been prepared to charge in regardless—
—but the situation had stabilized, at least for now.
Still, these three Upper Rank Demons were monstrously powerful.
Jigoro Kuwajima frowned deeply. Ryuya's Moon Breathing was overwhelming. Twice he had attempted to break through—and twice he had been stopped.
Is this truly Moon Breathing?
Sakonji Urokodaki felt shaken. The technique was clearly superior to the five foundational Breathing Styles.
And why did Ryuya always seem one step ahead?
The sensation was deeply unsettling.
Kanae clenched her jaw.
Her strength still wasn't enough.
She had failed to fully pin down Doma.
Now Ryuya, Doma, and Akaza remained concealed within the ice mist. For the moment, only she could safely press forward through it.
This battle was even harsher than she had imagined.
"We cannot allow the demons time to recover," Jigoro declared calmly. "If we cannot approach the mist, then we attack from range and force them out!"
"Thunder Breathing, Fifth Form: Heat Lightning!"
Golden lightning tore through the air like a dragon's claw, striking into the frozen haze.
"Sound Breathing, Fifth Form: String Performance!"
Tengen grinned as his blades spun violently. Explosions thundered inside the mist.
"Flame Breathing, Fifth Form: Flame Tiger!"
Shinjuro Rengoku swung his blazing blade. Flames coalesced midair into the shape of a roaring tiger before charging straight into the ice mist.
The fierce battle raged on.
