Just when Kaigaku thought the nightmare had ended and he could finally breathe—
On the fourth day of unconsciousness, another dream began.
This time, the entire Demon Slayer Corps stood before him.
They had discovered the truth.
His slander against Iguro Obanai had been exposed.
Voices filled the air.
Accusations. Condemnation. Disgust.
Rotten eggs struck his body. Spit landed on his face. Fists and kicks rained down on him.
Even his master, Kuwajima Jigoro, stood at a distance.
That look of complete disappointment pierced Kaigaku's heart like a poisoned needle.
And then—
Zenitsu stepped forward.
That useless Zenitsu.
He trampled Kaigaku beneath his feet, mocking him mercilessly.
Kaigaku roared in fury, but after days of mental torment, his resistance was feeble. His laughter twisted into something uglier than crying.
Then the dream shifted again.
This time, it was far worse.
If the previous dreams had been mental torture, this was absolute despair.
The Twelve Kizuki surrounded him.
Upper Ranks.
Lower Ranks.
All twelve sat in a circle.
Discussing how to eat him.
They described in detail which part of him would taste best. How they would carve him. How they would savor him slowly.
Every word burrowed into his bones.
He wished for death.
Because living through that nightmare was far worse than dying.
Seven days.
Seven endless days.
When he awoke at the end of Final Selection, his clothes were soaked. A foul stench clung to him.
He had passed.
But the terror remained.
"What's the point of telling you?" Kaigaku snapped suddenly in reality. "Will it help you pass the trial?"
Zenitsu flinched.
He had only asked how many demons Kaigaku defeated.
"Kaigaku," Jigoro frowned, "Zenitsu is congratulating you. Why speak to him like that?"
Zenitsu quickly shook his head. "Grandpa, maybe I said something wrong. Please don't scold Senior Brother."
"Grandpa? How many times have I told you to call me Master?" Kaigaku muttered irritably.
"I just think it sounds more affectionate…"
"Affectionate doesn't mean you ignore rules. Are you stupid? Forget it. I'm leaving."
The Kakushi guide was already waiting.
"Senior Brother, be careful," Zenitsu said softly.
"Kaigaku, come back safely," Jigoro added.
"Got it."
With blindfold and earplugs in place, Kaigaku was led away.
After countless turns and changes of escorts, he was finally set down.
"You may remove them," the Kakushi instructed before departing.
Kaigaku pulled off the blindfold.
Before him lay the Swordsmith Village.
Rows of bamboo houses connected in neat blocks. Steam rose into the sky from the village's famed hot springs, said to strengthen one's physique.
Masked swordsmiths moved busily through the streets.
Kaigaku felt a surge of anticipation.
This was his future.
His new beginning.
He stepped forward—
A hand landed heavily on his shoulder.
A familiar voice whispered near his ear.
"Kaigaku, thank you for leading the way."
His blood ran cold.
"R-Ryuya?!"
He turned slowly.
Under the moonlight stood Ryuya.
Behind him—
Five figures.
Lower Rank Six, Kyogai, the demon drums embedded in his body gleaming faintly.
Lower Rank Five, Rui, strands of spider silk trailing between his fingers.
Lower Rank Four, Rokuo, horns protruding from her head.
Lower Rank Three, Kiyo, scars lining his face.
Lower Rank One, Enmu, a twisted smile on his pale face.
The Lower Moons.
Kaigaku's legs began to tremble uncontrollably.
His limbs felt numb.
"Why are your legs shaking?" Ryuya asked mildly. "Are you scared?"
Kaigaku couldn't answer.
His nightmare had stepped into reality.
Behind Ryuya, Enmu tilted his head with fascination.
"So this is the human who slept through Final Selection," Enmu murmured softly.
Kaigaku's pupils shrank.
They knew.
They knew everything.
Ryuya smiled faintly.
"Relax. You did well."
"Y-you… what do you want?" Kaigaku stammered.
"What do I want?" Ryuya repeated lightly. "Nothing complicated. You simply fulfilled your role."
"Role?"
"To bring us here."
At that moment—
The air shifted.
From the shadows of the trees, spider silk lashed outward.
From beneath the ground, drumbeats echoed.
Kyogai struck the drums embedded in his body.
The ground tilted violently.
Within seconds, the peaceful Swordsmith Village descended into chaos.
Masked swordsmiths shouted in confusion.
Houses twisted unnaturally.
Rui's silk sliced through rooftops.
Kiyo leapt forward with a savage grin.
Rokuo's demonic aura flared.
Enmu's eyes gleamed with delight.
The Lower Moons had begun their assault.
Kaigaku stood frozen, horror etched across his face.
The nightmare had not ended.
It had only begun.
