"Hmm?!"
Hearing Ace's words, all the girls were stunned.
"Hahahaha…" The middle-aged man suddenly burst into laughter. He threw his straw hat into the air, revealing his dark face and iconic squinting eyes.
"I didn't expect that after so many years away from home, someone would still remember my name, Flint… Not bad, kid. I acknowledge you."
"Ahem… Although you say so, Uncle Flint, I really don't approve of you as a husband who abandoned his wife and children…" Ace mercilessly exposed him.
Flint was Brock's father from the original generation of Ash and Misty. In his youth, to pursue his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master, he left the Gym to his wife, Lola.
Believing Flint to be an irresponsible man, Lola also ran away from home, leaving behind only their eldest son, Brock, and his nine younger siblings.
From then on, Brock began a life of being both father and mother while also taking on the responsibilities of a Gym Leader.
This forged Brock's "mom" attribute and his iron will.
"Uh…" Flint's face reddened at his words, and he could only sigh.
"Youth is meant to be wild, kid. Who hasn't made mistakes when they were young? Yesterday, I even helped a young boy named Ash.
In him, I seemed to see my reckless younger self… Now he and my highly anticipated eldest son have embarked on a journey…"
Flint shook his head and did not continue explaining. He turned to lead the way.
"Let's go. Follow me to the Pewter Gym."
A moment later, everyone arrived in front of a building rich in rock elements. As the automatic glass door opened, a rugged, rocky arena came into view.
Flint walked to the main position and straightened his posture.
"Welcome to the Pewter Gym. I am Gym Leader Flint."
Ace curled his lips and stepped onto the battle platform.
"Newbie Trainer Ace, from Pallet Town."
"Next, the Gym Challenge Battle, with the Gym badge and three evolution stones as stakes, officially begins! The rules are 3v3.
If all of one side's Pokémon lose the ability to battle, they are declared the loser. Only the challenger may switch Pokémon!"
Flint recited the rules, then slowly raised the Poké Ball in his hand.
"Kid, three stones are no small sum. I must say, you're quite lucky, and quite unlucky… To take my stones, you'll first need this guy's approval! Go, Rhyhorn!"
"Roar—!"
Amidst a roar, an upright rhinoceros clad in gray rock armor and with a sharp drill horn on its head appeared in the arena.
[Rhyhorn Lv. 55 (Gym Intermediate)]
Ace raised an eyebrow. Before he could speak, Misty interjected from the side. "Uncle, aren't you clearly bullying him? Ace is just a newbie Trainer, after all?"
Flint's gaze swept toward Ace, and he shook his head slightly.
"Little girl, you might not know your boyfriend very well… I don't know about other things, but a Trainer who can get a Earth Badge from Giovanni won't be simple."
Upon entering the Gym, he had used the universal League system to register Ace's information, and the data had secretly astonished him.
Less than half a month since his debut, and his first badge was the Earth Badge from the Viridian Gym.
"I…" Misty was speechless.
She stomped her foot, and her face flushed. She wasn't sure if it was because the opponent was bullying him with Gym-level Pokémon, or because of the term "boyfriend."
"Uncle Flint, you've been adventuring for so long. Is this all you've achieved?" Ace smiled, and the first words out of his mouth were top-tier trash talk. "No wonder your wife ran away."
"You! Alright, alright… Kid, I'd like to see what you're made of."
"Heh, as you wish!" Ace raised his hand and threw a Poké Ball. "Houndour, I choose you!"
"Howl—!"
The hellhound emerged from the red light and let out a long howl full of momentum.
Flint was stunned. Ace was using a Fire-type Houndour against a Ground/Rock-type Rhyhorn that held the type advantage. Isn't this just a free win?
"Rhyhorn, use Earthquake!"
Without thinking, he unleashed an arena-wide Earthquake.
"Grass Knot to avoid damage, then use Will-O-Wisp!"
Ace seemed to have anticipated the opponent's attack and issued the command almost simultaneously.
Houndour's four feet moved rapidly as she dodged and weaved among the splashing rocks, avoiding much of the Earthquake's damage.
At the same time, she spat out an eerie blue flame that struck Rhyhorn directly in the chest.
"Whoosh!"
Flames erupted from within Rhyhorn, and it became burned.
"Interesting… but useless." Flint shook his head. "Continue, Rhyhorn. Use Earthquake!"
"Boom—!!"
Rhyhorn stomped the ground hard, and the entire Gym shook.
"Houndour, take this hit and use Toxic!"
Ace's voice was surprisingly calm.
Houndour lowered her body and endured the weakened Earthquake.
"Pfft…"
A concentrated stream of venom sprayed out from the dust.
Rhyhorn, not particularly fast, fell into a badly poisoned state and began taking escalating poison damage.
A moment later, the dust settled. In the arena, Houndour was panting heavily and had clearly sustained significant injuries.
Just when everyone was puzzled, a green light suddenly flew from Rhyhorn toward Houndour.
"Ow…" Rhyhorn cried out in pain and dropped to one knee.
"Hmm?!" Flint was startled but quickly reacted. "This is… Pain Split?"
"Bingo~" Ace smiled slightly. "That's right! As a reward, a Dark Pulse!"
"Howl!"
The recovered Houndour opened her mouth and unleashed a chaotic, swirling dark-type beam.
"Boom—!!"
Rhyhorn immediately collapsed.
Amidst the rising dust, it struggled to get up, but the burn flames and poison damage erupted, and it ultimately ran out of stamina and fell in defeat.
"Well done, Houndour~" Ace smiled.
"Howl~…" Houndour ran to his side and constantly rubbed her head against Ace's leg.
"Buzz…"
A hazy light emanated from her body and then enveloped her in a cocoon of light.
"It evolved…" Yellow's eyes sparkled. The scene of evolution always moved her deeply, no matter how many times she witnessed it.
"Whoosh…"
A moment later, the light dissipated, and a more slender hellhound appeared in the arena.
She had a pair of bony horns on her head, a half-ring of bone around her neck, two bone bracelets on each of her four legs, and her originally short, thick tail had become long and devil-like, ending in a sharp spike.
She exuded an aura of malice.
[Houndoom Lv. 54 (Gym Intermediate)]
"Congratulations, Houndoom~" Ace crouched down and hugged his dog-girl.
Under the influence of his aesthetic, Houndoom was not as slender as others of her kind.
Instead, she appeared very well-proportioned and possessed a smooth beauty. Her short black fur was very pleasant to touch.
"Howl~" Houndoom licked Ace's palm, and her tail wrapped around his arm.
In a short time, she had gone from being abandoned to being forcefully taken by Ace, then experiencing both pain and happiness, and now achieving her dog-life goal.
All of this seemed to have been brought about by her master before her. So much so that even though they were currently in a battle, she felt an urge to be filled by Ace.
