Both Duel Disks unfolded as the two drew five cards each.
Glancing at his hand, Yusaku looked at Ushio. "Senpai, you're really giving me first turn?"
"I said first turn is yours, so it's yours," Ushio crossed his arms, brimming with confidence. "If I went first, you wouldn't even survive to turn three. Besides, I want to see what kind of deck makes you spout that 'theory' from earlier."
"That so?" Yusaku raised a brow.
"My turn. Draw. Main Phase."
Yusaku studied his hand for a moment, then revealed a card.
"First, I activate the effect of Illusion of Chaos in my hand."
"This card can activate when revealed to the opponent. According to its effect, I can add 1 'Dark Magician' or a monster that mentions it in its text—other than a Ritual Monster—from my Deck to my hand, then place 1 card from my hand on top of the Deck."
"I add Magicians' Souls to my hand, then place the revealed Illusion of Chaos on top of the Deck."
"Huh? Dark Magician?! I thought you had something scary—turns out you're on a deck worse than third-rate! Isn't DM just a Spell-centric pile? Do you even have Extra Monsters?"
"Don't force it—there is a Fusion, right? Dark Paladin or whatever. Effect's mid. As for Synchro or Xyz, never heard of DM having those."
"Man, I got my hopes up. After that speech, I thought he had skills. Looks like Ushio's got this in the bag!"
Hearing the reveal, the students behind Ushio started handing down their 'verdicts.'
Even Ushio thought so. He shook his head at Yusaku. "So that's your deck? Dark Magician. In my book, DM only does Fusions—I can't picture how you'd pack in other Extra Deck summons."
Yusaku's lips quirked. "Seems you still missed my point. Why must Extra Deck monsters be 'on theme' with your Main Deck?"
"If my Main Deck is Dark Magician, does the Extra have to be DM-related only? Can't I run other monsters? If I can summon them, that's what matters."
"…?"
Ushio blinked.
Not running theme-locked Extra Monsters—he's serious?
"In that case, I'll continue. Watch closely. The engine I'm about to use is what I call my Toy–Souls package."
He slid a card into his Disk.
"I activate the Continuous Spell Toy Box!"
With a clang, a toy chest with a wide, goofy smile materialized at Yusaku's feet, stuffed with colorful knickknacks.
"Toy Box effect: from my hand/Deck/Monster Zone/Graveyard, I set up to 2 monsters whose original names include 'Toy' and that can place themselves face-down as Spells from the hand. Treat them as Spells and set them to my Spell/Trap Zone."
Yusaku pulled two cards from his Deck and revealed them.
"I set Toy Soldier and Toy Tank to the backrow."
"Next, I activate the effect of the Magicians' Souls I just searched." He flicked it between two fingers. "Its effect reads:
'If this card is in your hand: You can send 1 Level 6 or higher Spellcaster from your Deck to the GY; activate one of these effects.
• Special Summon this card.
• Or, send this card to the GY, then Special Summon 1 "Dark Magician" or 1 "Dark Magician Girl" from your GY.'"
"I send a Level 7 Dark Magician from my Deck to the GY to Special Summon Magicians' Souls."
Summoning light flared; silhouettes of Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl rippled in blue glow.
Magicians' Souls

"Then I use Souls' other effect. I can send up to 2 Spells/Traps from my hand or field to the GY; I draw the same number."
Yusaku popped two backrow cards from the Disk. "I send the two 'Toy' cards I set as Spells to the GY and draw 2."
He drew—and called out immediately.
"Chain! I trigger Toy Soldier in the GY, and chain Toy Tank."
"Both share the same effect: if they were sent to the GY while set in the Spell/Trap Zone, Special Summon this card."
"They were sent by Magicians' Souls, so condition met. Come on out, Toy Soldier! Toy Tank!"
Light rippled again. A red block-built toy tank rumbled in, alongside a tin-soldier with a toy rifle.

Ushio stroked his chin at the two bodies.
"Your deckbuilding's… eccentric, but the line is clean. Two cards for draw 2 and three bodies without using the Normal Summon. However…"
He glanced over Yusaku's three monsters.
"These stats are pretty low. Without real ATK, bodies alone are meaningless."
"Eccentric, huh?" Yusaku smiled, not explaining. After this duel, who's the eccentric will be obvious.
"Strength isn't just ATK, senpai. We're only getting started."
"You're really—"
"Don't interrupt. Watch closely—then decide who doesn't get it."
"You—!"
"Toy Soldier effect: while Toy Box is face-up on the field, I can add 1 LIGHT Level 4 monster from my Deck to my hand. My field meets the condition.
I add Mathmech Circular to hand."
Mathmech Circular?
"Your deck really is a hodgepodge—Mathmech has nothing to do with Dark Magician. Aren't you afraid of bricking?"
Circular bricks?
Yusaku chuckled.
"Relax. The brick you imagine won't happen. Frankly, calling this 'Dark Magician' undersells it—it's lots of small engines. I play what I draw. I planned to go the Circular route on you, but I opened two cards that are more interesting."
"If you survive this board, I'll show you whether Circular bricks."
He revealed a card.
"Next, Toy Tank effect: I can Tribute this card; Special Summon 1 Level 6 or lower monster from my hand."
"I Tribute Toy Tank to Special Summon Witch of the Black Forest (Level 4) from my hand!"
A robed witch with closed eyes and folded hands drifted onto the field.

Yusaku peeked at the draws; the corner of his mouth lifted.
The third piece finally showed.
He tucked the cards away and continued.
"Because Witch of the Black Forest was sent from the field to the GY, her effect triggers: add 1 monster with 1500 or less DEF from the Deck to the hand."
What to take…
He thought briefly—there were too many targets: hand traps like Nibiru, the Primal Being, draw engines, Mathmechs…
After a beat, he revealed his choice. "I add Kuriphoton (DEF 200) to my hand."
"Next, I Tribute Magicians' Souls on the field to Special Summon a monster from my hand!"
"Come—Silent Magician!"
Souls dissolved into light. A black hexagram bloomed across the floor. A lithe figure in a white mantle appeared, silver hair cascading as the staff in her hand gleamed like distant stars.
