Chapter 95 - Chapter 94: Running Back

The unknown is what truly terrifies people.

Especially when you do not understand what abilities the monster you are facing possesses.

The moment Harry Potter sensed that the monster hidden within the mouth of the Salazar Slytherin statue was about to emerge, he grabbed Hermione Granger's hand and ran toward the passage behind them.

He might be reckless, but he was not foolish, nor was he the kind of person who would throw his life away.

A gust of wind swept through the chamber, carrying a low, eerie hiss.

"So hungry, I am really so hungry, I want to eat."

To others, it sounded like a chilling hiss, but to Harry, it was the voice of another intelligent being, especially when it sounded like someone deciding what to eat for dinner.

It was hungry.

And right now, only he and Hermione were in the Chamber of Secrets.

Did that mean the monster intended to eat them as its late-night meal?

Harry swallowed hard, but he believed they still had a chance. If they could reach the bathroom and seal the entrance again before the monster emerged, they might survive.

Beside him, Hermione continued her reasoning even as they ran.

"I had doubts before, and even after seeing Myrtle, those doubts did not disappear, they only grew."

"I kept thinking, what if the Dark Magic that affected Myrtle and the others was not intentionally cast on them, but was only a side effect?"

"At first, I dismissed the idea because it did not make sense, since every spell requires a caster, a medium, and intent."

"But what if something else caused it, something that produced the effect unintentionally, and then I realized something both Filch's cat and Myrtle had in common, which is that they were not directly attacked but were affected after seeing something."

"Do you understand what this means, Harry?"

Hermione spoke quickly, her breathing uneven from running.

"What does it mean, Hermione?"

Even while running, Harry kept pace with her thoughts and asked immediately.

"It means what I told you earlier, which is that we must not look at it until we understand how it causes petrification the moment it is seen, so we must avoid direct contact at all costs."

"And more importantly, we must avoid eye contact completely, because Filch's cat and Myrtle only saw it through reflections like water or a mirror, and that alone turned them into statues."

"Just imagine what would happen if we looked at it directly."

She finished all her conclusions in one breath.

Hermione felt slightly relieved after saying it out loud.

At least she was not facing this alone.

They ran at full speed, retracing the dark passage that had taken them so long to cross before.

Now, even at their fastest pace, it still felt endless.

At last, they reached the entrance leading back upward.

Just as they were about to climb out, a series of rapid footsteps echoed from above.

The moment he heard them, Harry felt a surge of hope. Hermione also showed a flicker of relief, but unease still lingered in her heart.

Something felt wrong.

"Professor, is that you?"

Harry called out immediately.

The footsteps stopped.

Silence followed.

A heavy, unnatural silence.

Even Harry realized something was off.

"Professor, Professor?"

He called again, unwilling to give up.

Hermione grabbed his hand and shook her head.

When Harry turned, he saw the uncertainty in her eyes.

Without hesitation, he stepped back with her.

The footsteps did not return.

It was as if they had never been there at all.

But both of them knew that was impossible.

Hermione stared ahead, her thoughts racing.

If the message about the Chamber of Secrets being reopened was true, then the one behind everything might already be here.

They had searched the library countless times for information about the chamber, but nothing had prepared them for this moment.

Harry lowered his wand and tucked it away.

Compared to his wand, he trusted the guns in his hands more.

Holding the black and white guns, he paused for a moment before placing the white one into Hermione's hand.

She looked at him in surprise.

"I feel safer if you have it."

Harry said this simply, then took her hand again and led her back into the dark passage.

Hermione tightened her grip on the gun and followed silently.

The weapons gave them confidence.

But confidence alone would not save them if they had to face both the mastermind and the monster.

In the earlier passage, they had already seen enormous pieces of shed snakeskin.

It was enough to imagine how massive the creature truly was.

If it appeared, it would be a nightmare.

And Hermione's deduction only made it worse.

Even Harry, who said nothing, was clearly afraid.

He just refused to show it.

The hissing sound grew closer.

Harry and Hermione knew they were about to re-enter the Chamber of Secrets.

The statue, the monster, and multiple escape paths were all waiting ahead.

If they were fast enough, they might escape through another passage before whoever was above reached them.

All they needed was a little luck.
