Ficool

Chapter 10 - Threshold

The second floor, only one more level stood between us and escape.

Only one more struggling maze to go through.

The map told us to head straight and then turn left.

We followed its instructions to the absolute letter.

The dungeon did start to change. The scent was definitely one.

It smelled like someone hadn't showered in days.

The walls also started to evolve.

The pitch black bricks gradually but slowly started to shift to navy blue. Even the torches holding flames were blue.

We noticed it with one navy brick. When I examined it more closely I noticed there were engravings.

A screen popped up.

Clue #6

We had the possibility to turn right or continue straight.

Toby and I examined our maps and noticed that there was a treasure room if we headed that way.

What deterred us was a detached arm that was holding a briefcase.

A trail of blood ran through the right corridor.

It looked like someone was dragged.

The irony of it was that it was still gripping onto it tightly, determined to never reveal its secrets.

"Umm never mind, shall we continue good sir" I gulped.

"Indeed Indeed let us proceed forward" he replied.

We both jogged past it and whilst we were heading closer to the staircase me and Toby had the same thought.

That gentleman must have been brutally murdered heading towards the treasure room.

My bet is a creature is probably lurking there.

I love treasure and money but not enough to die for it.

Perhaps the gentleman was too avaricious for his own good.

Those thoughts circulated into our minds as we turned left and left again.

I did do my prior scouting and knew that a trap was lurking here.

Please don't be a hallucination trap, I don't think I have the mental stamina to continue.

We slowed down to a walking pace.

Then a new smell entered the air, subtle but unmistakable. It wanted to make its presence known.

Perfume was the smell. The more we walked the more the smell intensified.

I found a vial that was half consumed. It had a deep dark purple liquid, not a good sign.

A screen popped up once I questioned what the contents of the vial were.

Consumable Item

Poison - The user drinking this would die in 2 minutes (grade ?????)

Toby stepped on it so that we won't be idiots and drink it.

With each step we took the smell got stronger and stronger.

The drops of poison also seemed to increase but they were near the wall for some reason.

A discarded coat rested on the floor.

Why would a person leave a coat behind I wondered but the answer laid ahead of us when we saw a pit trap.

We peeked down, my eyes consumed something sweet but deadly.

It was a spike trap below. There lay two people. A man and a woman.

The couple.

The spikes impaled both their backs. The blood creating flavour on the spikes.

Why did they fall?

What was sweet was that they held hands and still looked at each other.

A tear was starting to form in my eye.

Even in death they never looked apart.

How far can love influence someone I wondered, is it a drug or is it just part of our natural lives.

Toby jumped over the pit faultlessly and I followed.

I looked back to send the couple my condolences, their despair is what drove them to fell.

My despair is what drove me to rise, I wanted to live.

Although I could understand how the couple must have felt.

Helpless, an emotion that only fuels despair.

We left behind that awful scene and came across a left turn.

The second we turned the floor began to rumble.

They're relentless. How are the two college kids still alive.

An explosion shook the floor.

We hurried but a locked door stopped us.

A screen popped up with the following

Optional

Below are seven spaces, input the code to enter the door to the treasure room

Failure would lead to a severe penalty

Note you don't have to put numbers in all seven spaces

_ _ _ _ _ _ _

Ahead of us we saw that the corridor would turn left. A shadow approached the section where we turn.

Another creature I thought. We're pincered, our only option is to enter this door.

"We have to go through this door" Toby panicked.

"Something or someone is coming".

I know my friend, you've helped me out many times during this dungeon it's about time I pay my dues.

Seven spaces. Seven floors.

We don't have to put all the numbers in the spaces, only some. Surely they would give out a clue.

Clue?

That's it. The clues.

In some floors we found clues. However this doesn't mean that we're potentially missing out.

Oh well I've been seriously unlucky today, maybe Lady Luck will feel sorry for me.

There were four clues that we found. With that I plugged in the number 6 for the second space.

Number 4 for the third space.

Number 3 for the fifth place.

Number 3 for the seventh place.

With that I clicked confirm.

A loading screen popped up in the screen.

Hurry, hurry. The sound of fire was getting ever so closer.

Then a screen popped up.

Accepted

There was a small click and I dragged Toby while I pushed the door and closed it.

I ensured it was locked.

The noise outside was muffled.

The room was huge. It looked like a prince's chambers in one of those royal palaces.

Before we explored the room. Multiple knocks came from the door.

Me and Toby froze. We both looked at each other and both shook our heads in agreement. We ain't opening nothing.

The knocks abruptly halted followed by muffled groans.

Now that we were undisturbed we properly looked around the place.

On one of the walls was a display of a rapier.

Since that wasn't my assigned weapon I put it in my inventory to see if it had any further uses.

On one of the bedside tables I managed to find a skill stone.

Skill Stone (Rarity Silver)

Breaking the stone allows the user an opportunity to gain a skill

This is only accessible to magic users

Once broken you must clear three challenges to unlock the skill

The methods you choose can determine the skill's final effect

Looks like we can't use it, again another bargaining tool.

There was a tray of sandwiches that me and Toby eagerly helped ourselves as we were starting to get hungry.

There was a closet of clothes but the sizes were too large for us so we couldn't even wear them.

But as I looked further into the closet I saw a pair of gloves.

At first I ignored it but I realised this could be gear, I touched it once and a screen appeared.

Gear: Worn Traveller gloves (Rarity Bronze)

Gloves worn by an experienced traveller

The condition isn't of satisfactory quality

Perks

5% chance of a skill stone dropped by a ????

Would you like to equip it?

Accept / Decline

I decided to secretly equip it without telling Toby.

I felt a little guilty but something about this told me that if Toby wore it he might have misinterpreted the skill stone bit.

The last thing I need is a super greedy friend, I say that because I admit I'm greedy.

"Hey Kei look what I found" exclaimed Toby.

I went over to him and it turns out he managed to find a nugget of gold.

"I'll take it for safekeeping" he said.

I nodded, this satisfied my reason not to give him the gloves.

Toby had that gleam in his eyes once more.

"I found a book but it had question mark so I'm handing it to you Kei".

I took it and placed it in my Inventory.

For some reason I couldn't open it but maybe that was because I had to open it later.

I looked around the shelves but found nothing. I noticed something above and jumped to grab it.

It was a vase.

I was about to put it back until it disintegrated into pieces.

This was the exact same situation as when Toby touched the military vest.

Truly what is this Dungeon I thought. Who created it and how?

I noticed something on the floor. I crouched down and picked it up.

It was a vial with a deep purple liquid. Poison.

I stored that in my inventory as a last resort measure.

"We can't stay here forever let's move" I said.

Toby gave me the thumbs up. I unlocked the door and tripped.

This is the second time I've tripped. Once I realised why I immediately slithered and hugged the walls.

A dead creature was at the front of the wall. Their were two other bodies around it.

Now to get out. But before we can move and turn to the left.

Shouting and roaring came through those walls.

I signalled Toby to stay silent. As we peeked to see what was going shards came flying towards us.

We took cover behind the walls and peeked more cautiously.

There were two college kids left, the girl using fire and the boy wielding a knife.

They were up against a creature who was holding a battle hammer but something about him was off.

Surrounding him was this yellow glow that completely contradicted his yellow skin.

His armour glistened with the light. His eyes locked on to the two.

"I have two more fireballs left" the girl panted.

The creature roared as he charged clumsily. Maybe he is a zombie.

It wasn't fast but the two weren't taking chances.

They dodged sideways and the boy slashed at a gap between the shoulder plates.

The creature cried but was still determined to fight.

Escape was possible.

But it would only reveal itself if we stay patient.

Bide your time Rivian, my chance will await.
