Static swallowed the conversation. Then another voice. Urgent this time. "We've lost half our markers."
The holographic map projected inside Kenneth's HUD flickered violently. One by one, the blue dots representing allied platoons blinked... then vanished.Not because they had died, but because the system could no longer find them. Kenneth felt the hairs along the back of his neck stand upright.
A low vibration rolled beneath his boots. Not an earthquake, but something was definitely moving beneath them, far below. He slowly looked toward the endless marsh. The stagnant pools rippled. Then...another ripple, followed by another.
Concentric circles spread across the black water, despite there being no wind.
