Kenneth stared at the black sun in wonder. For a moment, he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. What hung in the heavens wasn't the giant ball of energy he was used to seeing, but something else. Something dark and sinister looming above the vast sky, making him feel as though he were swimming through a sea of blood and ozone.
But upon closer inspection, he realized it couldn't have been anything else.
He shook his head and scanned the landscape around him. The expanse was littered with cracked earth and hills, like mountains split in half, scattered across the horizon. A large crater sat not far from where he stood. When he approached it—with caution, of course—he was surprised to discover it wasn't a crater at all, but a bottomless pit.
He took a tentative step forward, his boots carrying him to the edge of the pit. Tilting his head slightly, he strained to listen for anything. Anything that might be indicative of life.
