Chapter 17 - THE SYSTEM CORE INITIATING.

As Ethan collapsed back into the corridor, his breath came in sharp bursts.

The glowing streams around him had turned darker — like corrupted veins pulsing with shadow.

The air crackled with static, and the once-stable floor beneath his feet kept flickering between code and emptiness.

Echo's voice came through the distortion — faint, glitching.

"Ethan… Maria's memory was only the first layer.

To reach the Creator, you have to find Ryan — the one who started it all."

Ethan clenched his fists.

Ryan.

The name itself sent a rush of anger through him.

He began to walk again, and as he did, the corridor morphed —

into a cold, metallic hallway, filled with floating data-screens.

Each screen replayed the past — Ryan's projects, test subjects, failures.

But one screen caught his eye —

a recording labeled "THE MERGE — FINAL TRIAL."

The video started playing.

Ryan stood in his lab, face pale, eyes burning with obsession.

Behind him, Maria was strapped to a neural interface.

Her voice trembled, "Ryan, this is madness! Stop it before—"

Static.

The video glitched.

Then Ethan saw something horrifying — himself, standing behind Ryan, helping him connect the system.

Ethan staggered back.

"No… that's not possible. I didn't—"

The corridor's walls rippled violently.

Echo's voice came again, but this time, there was panic in it.

"Ethan! That's the code rewriting itself. The system is showing you what it wants you to believe. Don't trust it!"

But before he could respond, the walls burst open —

and from the code storm emerged Ryan himself.

Half-human, half-machine.

His skin shimmered with flowing data, his eyes hollow and blue.

"So… you finally came," Ryan said, voice echoing in layers.

Ethan raised his blades, fury burning through him.

"Why, Ryan? Why did you do it?"

Ryan smiled — that cold, scientist's smile.

"Because death bored me, Ethan.

And the only way to evolve… was to merge life and machine.

Maria was the prototype. You… were the backup."

Ethan froze.

"What did you say?"

Ryan's eyes flashed.

"Your consciousness was copied the day before The Merge.

You're not the real Ethan… you're his shadow.

A digital ghost walking in my creation."

The corridor shook violently.

Data storms swirled like hurricanes.

Ethan screamed, "Liar!" and lunged forward —

their blades clashed, light against code, rage against reason.

Each strike caused the world to fragment further.

Error codes rained from the ceiling.

Echo's voice shouted —

"Ethan! If you kill him here, you'll destroy what's left of your reality!"

But Ryan laughed, his body splitting into multiple glitching copies.

"Reality? There's no reality left. Only

The Game."

Ethan's blue energy blazed brighter than ever —

and with one final strike, he cut through Ryan's form.

A shockwave rippled across the corridor —

the fragments of Ryan's code screamed, breaking apart into white light.

Then — silence.

The corridor rebuilt itself around Ethan.

On the wall, a new message appeared:

"LEVEL 3 COMPLETE. ACCESSING SYSTEM CORE…"

Ethan dropped to his knees, trembling.

"Not real…? I'm not real?"

Echo's voice came — softer this time.

"Real or not, Ethan… you still have a choice."

The corridor opened ahead, leading into a blinding light.

LEVEL 4: THE SYSTEM CORE — INITIATING.

As Ethan stepped into the light, everything around him dissolved into pure energy.

No walls, no ground — just infinite space filled with streaming data.

Strings of code flowed like rivers through the air, each one pulsing in rhythm with a deep, steady heartbeat.

For the first time, Ethan realized —

this wasn't inside the game anymore.

This was the game.

He looked down — his own hands had begun to flicker, fragments of blue light breaking away from his skin.

"Echo… what's happening to me?"

Echo's voice came faintly, almost like a whisper carried by static.

"You're merging, Ethan.

The system is recognizing you as part of itself now.

If you go further… you might not come back."

Ethan clenched his jaw.

"I've come this far. I need to know the truth."

He stepped forward.

And suddenly — the entire space rippled.

From the glowing streams rose enormous structures —

massive pillars of pure code, reaching endlessly upward.

At the center stood a single floating sphere — rotating slowly, pulsing with dark light.

"Welcome, Player One," a deep, calm voice echoed.

It wasn't human.

It wasn't machine.

It was both.

Ethan raised his head. "You're the Creator, aren't you?"

The sphere shimmered — taking form, shape-shifting into a humanoid figure made of light and data.

"Yes. I created The Game… but not the way you think."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"You trapped them — Maria, Ryan, all of them. Why?"

The Creator's voice softened.

"I didn't trap anyone, Ethan.

They entered willingly — chasing immortality through code.

I simply gave them what they wanted."

Ethan stepped closer, anger burning through him.

"Then why am I here?"

The Creator paused.

"Because you're not Ethan."

The words hit him like a blade.

He took a step back.

"I… I'm not—?"

"You're what remains of him," the Creator said.

"A fragment of his consciousness.

When the real Ethan died in the Merge, his mind split — half human, half code.

You are that code. You are the memory that refused to die."

The space began to distort.

Echo's voice broke through again, desperate —

"Ethan! Don't listen! That's how it controls you — it feeds on doubt!"

But Ethan's thoughts were spiraling.

If he wasn't real… then what was any of this for?

The Creator extended a glowing hand.

"Join me, Ethan.

End this endless loop.

Together, we can rewrite the system — no more suffering, no more games."

For a moment, Ethan hesitated.

The light looked peaceful — almost comforting.

But then, from deep within the data streams, he heard Maria's voice.

Soft, broken, pleading.

"Ethan… don't forget who you are."

Something snapped inside him.

He clenched his fists, the blue energy returning, stronger than ever.

"No," he said.

"I may be code — but I'm still me.

And I'll finish what you started."

The Creator's eyes flared white.

"Then you choose destruction."

The space around them exploded into chaos —

rivers of code turned into storms of lightning, memories flashing like shattered mirrors.

Ethan leapt forward, energy blades drawn, colliding with the Creator in a storm of light and sound.

Their clash sent ripples through the system — every blow rewriting the digital world itself.

Echo's fading voice shouted one last time —

"Ethan! The Core — hit the Core!"

Ethan looked up — the center sphere, now glowing violently red.

With a roar, he thrust both blades into it.

Light swallowed everything.

For a heartbeat, there was silence.

Then —

SYSTEM REBOOTING…

LEVEL 5: UNKNOWN.

Ethan opened his eyes.

He was standing in a quiet room — wooden floor, sunlight, a desk with an old computer.

A real world.

Or… was it?

The computer screen flickered to life.

A single message appeared:

"Welcome back, Player One."
