Chapter 23 - Into the Void: Birth of the True Null — Part 3

Ethan took another cautious step into the swirling darkness.

Here… the rules of reality didn't just bend — they begged for structure.

The Void pulsed like a living organism, every breath a low vibration traveling through Ethan's bones.

A faint whisper drifted through the air —

not Echo's voice,

not Maria's…

something older, colder, and infinite.

"You finally arrived, Ethan…"

The Void thickened.

Shadows folded themselves into a shape —

first a ripple,

then a silhouette,

and finally a presence with no face,

no eyes,

no edges…

just a shifting outline made of anti-light.

Null.

The true form.

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

Not from fear…

from recognition —

like some part of him had always belonged here.

"Why do I feel like… I know you?"

his voice trembled, swallowed in the endless dark.

Null didn't step closer.

Null didn't need to.

The Void moved for him.

"Because you do," the voice whispered inside Ethan's skull.

"Every glitch, every distortion, every memory you lost… began with me."

Ethan tightened his grip on his blue energy blades, but the glow seemed weaker here.

Null raised a hand —

if it could be called a hand —

and the darkness peeled open like a curtain, revealing a suspended memory.

Maria.

She was running through a blinding corridor, alarms screaming behind her, Ryan shouting something…

and Ethan himself, unconscious on a metal table.

Ethan's breath froze.

"This… isn't possible."

Null's form flickered.

"You want the truth, Voidwalker? Then watch your beginning."

The memory sharpened.

Maria stopped beside unconscious Ethan, tears streaking her face.

"I'm sorry… Ethan, I had to do it. You were the only one who could survive The Merge."

The machines sparked violently.

A black surge — a corruption — burst from the core generator and devoured the lab, swallowing Maria, Ryan… everything.

Null leaned closer, voice like cracking ice.

"The Merge didn't create me."

A pause.

"You did."

The Void trembled.

Ethan staggered back, shaking his head.

"No… no, that's not—"

Null's presence expanded, towering, suffocating.

"I am every memory you buried, every fear you refused to face, every piece of your mind you lost to the Collapse."

The blades in Ethan's hands flickered.

The memory behind him warped.

Null whispered one final truth:

"I am your shadow, Ethan. And the Void… is where you made me."

Silence exploded into nothingness.

And the real battle began —

not against Null…

but against himself.

The ground beneath Ethan vanished.

He wasn't falling.

He wasn't standing.

He simply existed in a space where direction, gravity, and time had no meaning.

The Void wrapped around him like a second skin — cold, electric, and uncomfortably familiar.

Null's shape hovered above him, stretching and collapsing like a living tear in reality.

"You still don't understand, Ethan," the voice echoed from everywhere, and nowhere.

"The Merge didn't break the world. You broke it… trying to save it."

The words stabbed like memory-shards.

Suddenly, bright cracks of light tore through the darkness —

memories Ethan didn't know he had.

A younger version of himself, frantically typing commands into a lab terminal.

Maria screaming,

"Ethan, stop! The system can't handle that much input—"

Ryan pulling cables, alarms howling, screens bleeding red warnings.

And the core…

the same core that triggered The Merge…

it wasn't malfunctioning.

Ethan was forcing it.

Back in the present Void, Ethan gasped, clutching his head.

"Why would I—"

Null cut him off.

"To save Maria."

The Void rippled, and another memory slammed into existence:

Maria lying in a containment pod, pale, unconscious, her vitals dropping.

A glitch in her neural link spreading like black frost.

Ryan shouting,

"We can't save her! Her brain can't hold the link!"

And Ethan — desperate, terrified — whispering:

"Then I'll merge the stabilizer with me. I can take it."

The machine roared to life.

Energy ruptured.

Darkness poured out.

And from that darkness… Null was born.

Ethan staggered backward in the Void, breath shaking.

"No… that can't be true. I didn't create—"

Null's form solidified, towering, pulsing like a black star.

"You didn't mean to. But your fear, your guilt, your fragmented memories—they needed form. They needed structure."

A pause that stretched like eternity.

"And so, they became me."

The Void cracked beneath Ethan's feet.

Blue light shot up through the fractures — his energy blades responding to his heartbeat, his fear, his rage.

Null extended an arm, the shadows around it twisting like claws.

"Face it, Ethan. I'm not your enemy. I'm what you buried."

Ethan lifted his blades as the Void trembled with raw power.

His voice was low, broken… but steady.

"Then it's time I stop running from myself."

Null moved.

Ethan moved.

Light and darkness collided, splitting the Void into a thousand glitching fragments.

And Level 7 truly began —

a battle not between two beings,

but between the truth and the lie he lived with.
