Ficool

Chapter 2 - FOOL!

"Are you new around here? You seem lost. No offense" Maka had continued to say after her abrupt appearance in front of Nate.

Nate, who was still shaken from his transportation and the appearance of Excalibur in his mind, looked visibly distressed and shaken. And here was a seemingly normal, if albeit oddly dressed, girl in front of him asking if he was okay.

She had a black cloak with a plaid red and black skirt with overtly chunky white and black high-top shoes, her hair was worn in two blonde pig-tails on the back of her head and with blonde bangs in the front.

Sadly Nate wasn't in the right head space for noticing what the girl had on or how nicely she smelled, he was constantly looking over his shoulder at the window where Excalibur had appeared once again and simply said "FOOL!" and pointed his cane at him in the reflection.

"Well you're a little strange but its nice to meet you, my name's Maka Albarn." The girl said as she extended a white gloved hand to him.

He took her hand and shook it warily as he didn't fully know her intentions with him, or why she was being so nice. Nate didn't remember a whole lot from his life but he had the basics, and he knew that people were typically only nice when they wanted something.

This girl had seemed different though, her soft smile and odd appearance for some reason put Nate at ease like she was an old friend seeing for the first time in a while.

"So how old are you? Are you an academy student? If so you're a bit over-dressed for your first day..." Maka said obviously thinking that Nate's pristine suit would be hard to move in and probably not suited for sparing, real combat, or sitting down in lecture.

D blinked at her and slightly threw his head to the side, why was she asking him all of these questions he wondered. Nevertheless he answered succinctly and in order of what she asked him.

"I'm 19, and no I don't think I'm a student at any academy." How Nate knew how old he was he figured was due to whatever magic had probably brought him to this place. It seemed like he really only remembered the basics about the world, his name, and his age.

He tried to scan his mind for any other memories he could find, momentarily ignoring the girl in front of him as she said "Oh I'm 19 too, that's a funny coincidence. Though its odd you're that old in the city and not an academy student."

"I actually just got here, and honestly I can't remember anything before waking up in the middle of the desert." Nate said pointing behind him to the road he'd just walked to get into the city.

Maka put a finger to her chin as she thought about what he'd just told her and what to do about it. "Hmmm...I have an idea. Stand still for a second." She took a few steps back from him and focused. She was trying to focus on his soul.

All beings in this world had souls, her father had told her from a young age. However when she looked to see Nate's soul something inexplicable happened.

She looked deep into his body, looked as hard as she could but alas she couldn't sense his soul or see it. She immediately took more steps back away from him.

'Was he a Kishin?' She thought to herself. 'Or some sort of golem?' She'd never heard of a golem that looked as human as he did but it would explain his strange behavior she figured.

"Nate I just tried to look and see your soul, and I don't know if this will alarm you but I can't find it." His eyes nearly bulged out of his head at her words. Nate looked down at his torso as if he could see anything and stared hard as she had but to alas he couldn't sense anything since unbeknownst to him he was not a meister.

"I-I think we should go see Lord Death." She said abruptly. " He should know what to do in a situation like this, he's very wise."

"Uhh yeah no I'm not going to see someone named Lord Death, what do you think I am stupid?"

Maka almost burst out laughing, it was almost unheard of to meet someone like Nate who didn't know who Lord Death was. In this world he reigned something akin to a king or a God. Though he was a lot nicer than those titles would imply.

Maka stopped laughing, feeling the weight of Nate's ire of being laughed at fall upon her. She cleared her throat and once again reached out a hand for his. Before he knew it their hands were locked.

"Look, I can't make you come with me, but if you just trust me I promise Lord Death isn't as scary as he sounds. He is the only person who can help us right now." She said softly as they both stood their holding hands awkwardly.

Before Nate could answer a voice loudly sounded inside his head, and made him throw his head back in sudden pain from the sound. It was sadly Excalibur...again.

"FOOL! Accepting help from such a dainty woman, you really aren't worthy of the power I've bestowed onto you. I order you not to accept her help!"

Nate's head careened back while he stood there with Maka and he yelled in pain.

"What's wrong? Are you going to be okay?" Maka said, tightening her grip on his hand instinctively out of care for another person.

"Yeah...I'm fine," Nate said as he rubbed the back of his head with his free hand.

"You're obviously not well, and somethings wrong. Are you sure you don't want to go see Lord Death? If not its fine"

Nate looked at her for a long moment, took in her old book and apple scented smell as he took a long deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment, searching for signs of Excalibur in his mind. He heard nothing and looked back to the window and saw nothing in it. He turned back to Maka.

"Alright, take me to see Lord Death."
