"...Madness immunity?" was all Nate said before Death took out a box, from somewhere on his person he guessed, that was rather ornate in construction. He opened the box and presented its contents to Nate.
"Look inside this box Nate, what do you see?"
Nate crooned down his neck to get a better look at what appeared to be a tattered piece of paper? No this was thicker than paper, was it a piece of someone's skin?
"What-what is that?" Nate asked Death, a sense of foreboding hanging over is head, emanating from the piece of flesh inside the box.
"It is...the remains of someone I knew long ago, someone who succumbed to his own madness. It has the property of inducing madness in unstable souls."
"You showed me something that dangerous? And you didn't even warn me?" Nate nearly yelled in protest at the grim reaper.
"But I did warn you, you said you'd take the test. This is the test." Death leaned to the side in a comedic way unfit for the situation.
"Hmm...some strange test, well I don't feel anything different yet. Maybe its broken?" Nate said taking another step closer, before a brief flash of a memory that wasn't his appeared in his mind painfully.
Nate stepped back grabbing his head as a white top hat appeared on over his head and he could feel his mind splitting into someone else's. He yelped in pain before being thrust out of his own body. and everything went black...
When Nate came to he was seated in a small ornate chair sipping tea out of an porcelain cup. He immediately spit the tea in the direction of Death on accident, as the tea was exceptionally bitter. "What the hell just happened?"
"Ohh nothing, I sort of expected something like that to happen. Excalibur popped out of your soul and we had a little chat so to speak." Death said as he also sipped tea out of a porcelain cup through his mask before sitting it down.
"You obviously know Excalibur, what is he? Am i possessed by some sort of demon?" Nate said throwing his hands onto his face in a soothing gesture, afraid at what Death would say.
"Possessed? In a way, yes. But by a demon? No, Excalibur can be...unwieldly to say to least but he's the furthest thing from malicious." Death waltzed over back to his mirror away from Nate as he continued.
"In fact in legend Excalibur is the utmost paragon of good, helping kings and the like. Now you are the holder of that power Nate. You are now the original weapon, and the ultimate weapon."
"Oh Is that why my arms changed in to blades earlier? Or is that not normal?" Nate said rubbing the back of head.
"No that's perfectly normal for people around here. In fact its the entire reason I founded the DWMA in the first place, To train people with abilities like yours."
"Would be fine if I stayed here then? I honestly don't remember anything before meeting Excalibur...You're Death so i feel fine telling you this, but I'm pretty sure I died before coming here. I'm from another world"
Death put a large finger up to his mask as he said, "you're from another world, you died and came here where your soul was permanently affixed with Excalibur. Not exactly the typical enrollment but we're full of unique cases here."
Death suddenly appeared by one of the windows at the edge of the Death room faster than Nate could see. He waved a forthcoming hand instructing Nate to join him by the window. Nate obliged him.
"Do you see anything out there? Besides the city that is." Death asked Nate. Nate got to his tippy toes and looked out the window where he concentrated his eyes, trying to see whatever Death saw when suddenly a giant circle of golden energy appeared outside the city, surrounding it.
Nate stumbled back from the window in a panic, "what the hell is that?!" He asked frantically.
"That is your soul you just saw out the window, truth be told your soul is actually even larger than mine...which is unfathomably unusual Nate, that's the reason Maka couldn't see your soul. She just didn't know where to look."
"Oh, well that's good I guess, but what does it mean that my soul is bigger than yours?"
Death had a worried look on his masked face as he said, "It means that you'll be hunted by some very bad people sadly, people who want to use your unfathomable power for their own plans."
"What should I do then?"
"Well...I could offer for you to stay here at the DWMA as a student, it would protect you from the outside world...for the most part, and we could teach you how to hone your special abilities to where you can protect yourself."
Nate put a finger to his chin and thought about Death's offer, thought about Maka who he really wanted to see again. After thinking on it for a second he fully extending a hand to meet one of Death's own in a shake.
"Yeah I'll join the DWMA, thank you!"
"Great to hear it, I'll arrange for you to have an apartment in the city with the other students, and send your class schedule by the end of the day. For now ask your friends Maka and Evelynn to show you around campus, they should be returning soon outside the Death room."
And with that Nate left the Death room, he stood outside in the DWMA hallway Sid had dragged him here through for few seconds before Sid, Maka, and Evelynn rounded the corner each with a lunch tray. Sid carried two, one he offered to Nate as soon as he saw him.
"Here ya go kid eat up, I think of myself as a rather generous man so i got you an extra helping of Salisbury steak." Sid said handing him the tray.
Nate took it and looked to Maka who began inquiring about his meeting with Death before Sid left the three alone while he went back into the Death room where he saw Death still standing, staring out into the world through his window.
"Sir... is everything alright?"
"Oh! Sid, you startled me. Yes everything is alright and it is just as our friend says."
Sid sat his lunch tray down on the mini table that had materialized whilst Nate was unconscious.
"So he really is possessed by Excalibur, that can't be easy..."
"On the contrary, Excalibur should make young Nate's life particularly easy in some aspects but as their soul grows more and more unstable...I fear he may succumb to the same madness Excalibur suffers from."
"But you have a plan to fix that? Right sir?" Sid asked with a grim look on his face from Death's foreboding statement.
"Why yes, I do. Tell me what has BlackStar been up to recently?"
