Chapter 156 - Chapter 27 — The First Night of Fear, Part1

Part 1 — A Warm Return Home

The bell rang.

A sharp, clear sound that cut through the room.

Chairs shifted. Bags opened. Conversations rose all at once.

Students began packing up.

Haruto closed his notebook quietly.

Beside him, Amaya stretched slightly.

"Not bad today."

Haruto gave a small nod.

Across the room—

Kaito was already up, swinging his bag over his shoulder.

"Let's go."

Ayame stood calmly, adjusting her sleeve.

"Wait."

She glanced toward the others.

"See you tomorrow."

Misaki smiled lightly.

"Yeah… see you."

Yuna gave a small wave.

Souta grinned.

"Don't fall behind now, Enkage."

Kaito smirked.

"Worry about yourself."

A few light laughs.

They stepped out of the classroom.

The hallway outside was still filled with students—voices, movement, noise everywhere.

But as they reached the academy gates—

it slowly emptied.

One by one, the crowd faded away.

Until—

there was no one outside.

No Akari.

Just silence.

Kaito looked around.

"…Where is aka?"

Ayame's eyes scanned briefly.

"…Not here."

Haruto didn't speak.

Just turned slightly.

"…Let's go."

The three of them walked home together.

No extra words.

Just footsteps.

When they reached the house—

Haruto pushed the door open.

"…We're back."

Inside—

Renjiro stood calmly.

Waiting.

A pause.

Then—

all three froze for a split second.

"Kaito—"

"BROTHER!"

Kaito dropped his bag on the sofa and rushed forward instantly.

Haruto followed right after.

Ayame stepped in more calmly—but still quick.

All three reached him—

and hugged him tightly.

Renjiro let out a small breath.

"…You're all too energetic."

But he didn't move away.

Kaito pulled back first, grinning.

"I knew you were home!"

Haruto looked up, slightly out of breath.

"…When did you come back?"

Ayame adjusted her sleeve.

"…You didn't inform us."

Renjiro nodded slightly.

"…I arrived earlier."

His gaze shifted to all three of them.

"…So."

A small pause.

"…Tell me."

Kaito straightened immediately.

"Easy."

He pointed between them like it was obvious.

"Ayame got first."

Then Haruto.

"He got second."

Then himself, proudly.

"And I got third."

A short silence followed.

Renjiro looked at them for a moment.

Then—

"…I see."

A faint, calm expression formed.

"…I'm proud of you three."

That simple line—

made the room feel warmer.

Haruto lowered his gaze slightly.

Ayame stayed calm.

Kaito just smiled.

For a moment—

everything felt normal again.

The warmth in the room lingered quietly after Renjiro's words.

Kaito dropped onto the sofa with a long stretch.

"…Man, I'm tired."

Ayame placed her bag down neatly near the table.

"You complained more than you walked."

"I carried emotional exhaustion."

"…That isn't real."

Haruto let out a faint laugh under his breath.

Then his eyes moved around the room slightly.

"…Where's Aka?"

Ayame blinked once.

"…She didn't come to pick us."

Kaito sat up a little.

"Yeah."

Then he looked toward Renjiro.

"…She also didn't sleep well last night."

Renjiro's expression stayed calm.

"…She went to the hospital earlier."

All three paused.

Ayame's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…Hospital?"

"She isn't injured," Renjiro said before they could panic.

"A woman nearby collapsed this morning. Akari accompanied her there."

The tension eased immediately.

Kaito let out a breath.

"…Oh."

Haruto lowered his gaze slightly.

"…That sounds like Aka."

Renjiro nodded once.

"…She should return soon."

Almost right after he said it—

the front door opened.

"I'm home—"

Akari stepped inside carrying grocery bags in both hands.

She froze slightly upon seeing everyone already there.

"…Ah."

Then her expression softened instantly.

"You're back."

Kaito stood first.

"Aka!"

Akari smiled apologetically.

"Sorry… I couldn't come pick you up today."

Ayame walked closer.

"…You should've informed us."

"I know."

Haruto looked at her quietly.

"…Did you sleep at all?"

Akari blinked once—

then laughed softly.

"…Maybe a little."

Kaito pointed immediately.

"See? I told you."

Akari sighed dramatically.

"You're all worrying too much."

"That's because you disappear randomly," Kaito replied.

Renjiro stepped forward and took one of the grocery bags from her silently.

Akari smiled lightly at him.

"Thank you."

Then she looked back at the three of them.

"Well then."

She lifted the remaining bags slightly.

"…Since everyone's finally home."

"Lunch."

Kaito's eyes lit up instantly.

"FINALLY."

A little while later—

the dining table was filled completely.

Fresh rice.

Miso soup.

Grilled fish.

Warm side dishes lined neatly across the center.

Steam rose softly through the room.

Kaito already reached forward slightly—

only for Akari to tap his hand lightly.

"…Wait."

"…I wasn't doing anything."

"You absolutely were."

Ayame sat beside Haruto calmly.

Renjiro across from them.

Once everyone settled—

Akari smiled gently.

"Itadakimasu."

"Itadakimasu."

The room slowly filled with warmth afterward.

Small conversations.

Soft laughter.

The sound of chopsticks and bowls.

Kaito talking nonstop.

Ayame correcting half the things he said.

Akari laughing quietly.

Even Haruto looked more relaxed than usual.

For now—

everything felt peaceful.

Like the world outside didn't exist.

Just family.

Just home.
