Chapter 39 - runors and jealousy learns to walk

Jay arrived with Section E spilling

around her like gravity had lost control. She wasn't in a mood. Not angry—alert. The kind of calm that came right before noise.

Keifer walked beside her, hand loose in his pocket, eyes scanning without looking like he was scanning. He noticed things. Always did.

"Why are people staring?" Jay muttered.

Denzel snorted. "Because you exist."

"No," Yuri said calmly. "Different staring."

Jay stopped walking.

That's when she heard it.

Not loud. Not whispered either. The dangerous kind—the confident rumor voice.

"…yeah, I heard Keifer was talking to someone from C block."

"During London stuff, right?"

"Guess Jay didn't know."

Jay's steps slowed.

Keifer's jaw tightened. Not angry. Controlled.

Felix swore under his breath. "Oh hell no."

Jay didn't explode. She didn't shout.

She didn't even turn around.

She smiled.

That scared them more.

"So," jay turned toward section e Jay said lightly, adjusting her bag strap. "Who wants to tell me why my name is being passed around like gossip currency?"

Silence.

Then Rory pointed with his chin. "Cafeteria. Center tables."

Jay followed his gaze.

And there she was.

C section girl. Perfect posture. Too much confidence for someone borrowing oxygen. Sitting where Jay usually sat. Laughing like she belonged there.

Jay exhaled slowly.

"Oh," she said. "That explains it."

Keifer spoke quietly. "Jay—"

She raised a finger without looking at him. "Not now."

Yuri leaned in. "You know it's bullshit.

"

"I know," Jay replied. "Doesn't mean I like it."

They kept walking.

Every step toward the cafeteria felt heavier. Not because Jay was unsure—because she was deciding how much damage was appropriate.

The cafeteria was loud. Too loud.

Plastic chairs screeching. Trays clattering. People laughing like nothing in the world was wrong.

Jay stood frozen for exactly three seconds.

Three seconds too many.

That girl—that girl—was laughing. Head tilted. Hair perfect. Acting like she didn't just put her name in a rumor blender and hit pulse.

Jay's jaw clenched.

"Oh," she said softly. "So this is where delusion eats lunch."

Keifer turned his head. "Jay—"

She was already walking..

Fast.

Section E noticed instantly.

Felix muttered, "Oh shit."

Denzel leaned back. "Someone hold my drink."

Yuri's lips curved. "This will be educational."

Jay stopped right in front of the table.

The girl looked up, fake-sweet smile ready. "Can I help you?"

Jay laughed. Not happy. Not amused.

The kind of laugh that warns.

"Yeah," Jay said. "You can shut the fuck up."

The cafeteria went silent.

The girl scoffed. "Excuse me?"

Jay leaned closer. "I said. Shut. The fuck. Up."

The girl stood. "You're insecure, that's your problem. Just because Keifer talks to people—"

That was it.

Jay lunged.

Not hesitating. Not thinking.

Pure instinct.

Her hand shot forward—

—and suddenly she wasn't moving anymore.

Keifer had her.

One arm locked tight around her waist, lifting her clean off the ground.

"JAY," he snapped.

She LOST IT.

"LET GO OF ME—"

She kicked the air violently, heel slicing nothing but oxygen.

"I WILL RIP HER FUCKING EXTENSIONS OFF—"

The girl stumbled back, face pale.

Jay twisted in Keifer's hold, pointing straight at her.

"You absolute dumbass, delusional, attention-starved—"

She inhaled sharply.

Then the curses came.

Fast. Furious. Beautiful.

"You stupid bitch—

PUTANG INA MO—

CHUTIYA—

MADARCHOD—

MERDE—

PUTA—

VACA—

IDIOTA—

STRONZA—

SALOP—

IDI NAHUY—

IDIOT—

BAKA—"

Someone gasped.

Someone else whispered, "Did she just—"

Jay wasn't done.

"You walking PR disaster, plastic-faced, personality-less excuse of a human—"

"Jay," Keifer warned, voice low.

The girl yelled back, "What did you just call me?!"

Jay snarled, "I CALLED YOU BAKA."

Yuri smirked

A beat.

Rory blinked. "What the hell is baka?"

Jay turned her head slightly, still suspended. "I say that word a lot and you don't know."

Yuri chuckled. "It's Japanese. Means idiot. Crushed with disrespect."

Keifer stiffened.

He looked at Yuri. "Wait."

Yuri met his gaze, amused. "You thought her Japanese curses."

Keifer exhaled through his nose. "Of course she knows Japanese curses."

Jay kicked the air again. "LET ME AT HER—"

The girl shouted, "You're crazy!"

Jay snapped back instantly. "YOU SAT IN MY SPOT."

Dead silence.

Even Aries, standing near Section A, covered his mouth.

"…yeah," he muttered. "She's dead."

Keifer lowered Jay just enough for her feet to touch—but didn't release her.

"Apologize," Jay demanded.

The girl shook. "I—I didn't mean—"

Jay leaned forward again. Keifer tightened his grip.

"I WILL RUIN YOUR SOCIAL EXISTENCE IN LANGUAGES YOU DON'T EVEN SPEAK."

The girl cracked. "I'M SORRY!"

Jay stared at her.

Long. Sharp. Cold..

Then she waved her hand dismissively. "Move."

The girl grabbed her tray and fled.

The cafeteria exploded.

Shouting. Laughter. Whistles.

Felix yelled, "SECTION E NEVER DISAPPOINTS!"

Drew clapped. "SAY IT AGAIN IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE!"

Keifer finally released Jay.

She turned on him immediately. "You lifted me."

"You were about to commit homicide"

"She deserved it."

"Couse She sat in your seat."

Jay crossed her arms. "Exactly."

Aries walked past, shaking his head. "I leave you alone for five minutes."

Jay shot him a grin. "You miss me."

He sighed. "Unfortunately."

Keifer leaned down, voice quiet. "You okay?"

Jay huffed. "I'm fine. Just annoyed."

Then she added, deadly calm,

"And if one more bitch lies about you, I'm adding Russian next."

Keifer smirked. "Hot."

Section E exploded

Jay didn't wait.

The cafeteria noise was back—too loud, too normal—like nothing had just happened. Like she hadn't almost jumped a girl and cursed her ancestors in sixteen languages.

She turned on Keifer the moment they reached the side hallway.

"Explain," she snapped.

Keifer blinked once. "Good afternoon to you too."

She shoved his chest with one finger. Not hard. Annoyed. Sharp.

"DON'T," she said. "Do not joke. Explain. Why were you talking to her."

Her eyes were blazing—but her mouth was doing that thing.

Pouting. Just slightly. Betraying her.

Keifer noticed. Of course he did.

He leaned against the wall, arms crossing calmly. Too calmly.

Jay hated that.

"So?" she pressed. "I'm waiting."

Section E hovered nearby pretending not to listen.

They were absolutely listening.

Felix whispered, "Ten bucks she explodes again."

"Shut up," Yuri murmured, smiling.

Keifer sighed. "She came to me."

Jay scoffed instantly. "Oh, of course she did."

"She asked if the rumor was true."

Jay froze. "…what rumor."

Keifer looked straight at her. "That I was single."

Her stomach flipped.

"…and?" she demanded.

"I told her no."

Jay blinked.

Once.

Twice.

"…that's it?" she said suspiciously.

"That's it."

She stared at him like she was waiting for a punchline.

"…Then why did she look so confident?" Jay snapped. "Why was she smiling like she won something?"

Keifer stepped closer.

"She smiled," he said calmly, "before I finished my sentence."

Jay's brows furrowed. "Meaning?"

"I said, 'No, I'm not single. And even if I were, I wouldn't be interested.'"

Silence.

Jay swallowed.

"…You said that?"

"Yes."

Her anger deflated a little. Not fully. Never fully.

"Then why didn't you tell me she talked to you?" she shot back.

Keifer tilted his head. "Because it meant nothing."

Jay's eyes flashed. "It meant something to me."

Her voice cracked—not sad, just frustrated.

"I walk in and everyone's whispering. I see her sitting there like she belongs. And you—" she gestured wildly, "—you didn't even look surprised."

Keifer softened.

That scared her more than anger.

He reached out, thumb brushing her knuckle. "Jay."

She pulled her hand back immediately.

"No. Don't soften me. I'm still mad."

"I can see that."

"I almost fought someone."

"You almost committed a felony."

"She SAT IN MY SEAT."

Keifer smiled despite himself.

Jay glared. "Don't smile."

He didn't stop.

"She didn't matter," he said quietly. "You do."

Jay looked away.

"…I know that," she muttered.

Then, softer, almost embarrassed:

"I just hate when girls look at you like that."

Keifer leaned down slightly. "Like what?"

"Like I'm temporary," she snapped. "Like they're just… waiting."

Keifer lifted her chin gently so she had to look at him.

"I don't wait," he said. "I choose."

Her face heated instantly.

"…You're annoying," she muttered.

"You're jealous."

"Shut up."

"You were pouting."

"I was NOT pouting."

He smirked. "You absolutely were."

Jay huffed, crossing her arms again. "If another girl talks to you—"

"I'll shut it down."

"Immediately."

"Yes."

"And tell me."

"Yes."

"And if I curse in another language?"

He leaned in and kissed her.

Quick. Firm. Just enough.

"Profanity rule," he murmured.

Section E screamed.

"GET A ROOM—

"AGAIN??"

"THIS IS A SCHOOL—"

Jay shoved Keifer lightly, flustered.

"You did that on purpose."

"Absolutely."

She tried to stay mad.

She failed.

"…Fine," she sighed. "But if she breathes near you again—"

Keifer kissed her forehead. "I know."

Jay smirked.

Chaos followed her everywhere.

And Keifer?

He chose it—every single time.
