Chapter 419 - Outskirts pt 2

I didn't actually expect Nick to follow me.

When I swung my door open and stepped out onto the gravel, I thought he'd sit tight in the air-conditioned quiet of his car, frowning at his phone, acting like he was far too good for whatever mess I was walking into.

But then I heard the heavy thud of his car door closing, followed by the steady crunch of his shoes behind mine.

I turned my head just enough to see him out of the corner of my eye.

He looked entirely out of place in his tailored trousers and crisp collar, standing in the shadow of a crumbling, five-story apartment complex that smelled faintly of sour trash and old rain.

Yet he didn't falter. He just fell into step right behind me, diving headfirst into something he didn't understand, blindly following me into a dark hallway without a single clue as to where it ended.

It was reckless. It was completely foolish. And I was loving every second of it.
