Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Ayla Ignis

Chapter 5:

Volkaris Vanguard:

Ayla Ignis

Act 1

[Scene 1: Flambrise: Ashward: Ignis Household - Late Afternoon - 14 years ago]

[The sky burns in dull orange as ash drifts through the air. From the distant horizon, a lone woman walks toward the Ignis stronghold, blue flames dancing in her hand. Each step she takes leaves a faint shimmer of heat.]

[Kael, only 8 years of age, stands near the courtyard gates. His eyes widen as he recognizes her, and without hesitation, he runs across the cold stone path.]

Kael (bright, overjoyed): "Sister!"

[Ayla slows her steps, her flame dimming slightly as she looks down at him. The stern look on her face softens.]

Ayla (gentle, faint smile): "Kael."

[Kael reaches her and stops, slightly out of breath, but smiling widely.]

Kael (excited): "I missed you! I thought you'd be gone longer!"

Ayla (calm, soft): "And I you… though the road did not keep me long."

[The blue flame in her hand flickers and fades as she rests it at her side.]

[Heavy footsteps echo behind them as Theron approaches from the gates, his presence firm and commanding.]

Theron (stern, composed): "You've returned. Speak, how did the task fare?"

[Ayla turns slightly toward him, her expression growing cold and confident.]

Ayla (cold, dismissive): "It was nothing worth telling. A mere necromancer hiding in ruins."

Ayla (slight disdain): "Even our lesser Elementors could have dealt with it. I expected a worthy trial… but found none."

[A brief silence passes, the wind carrying ash between them.]

[Kael looks up at her with admiration, eyes shining.]

Kael (amazed, inspired): "You're incredible, Sister Ayla!"

[Ayla glances back at him, her expression softening just a little.]

Ayla (quiet, warm): "Thank you, Kael."

[Scene 2: Ignis Household: Inside: Ayla's Chamber - Night]

[The room is dim, lit only by a flickering candle. Shadows crawl along the stone walls. Ayla sits by a wooden desk, writing in her journal with quiet focus.]

[The door creaks open softly. Kael steps inside, rubbing his eyes.]

Kael (quiet, hesitant): "Ayla."

[Ayla pauses her writing and looks over her shoulder.]

Ayla (gentle): "Kael… what brings you here at this hour? Should you not be asleep?"

[Kael walks closer, holding onto the edge of her cloak.]

Kael (soft, restless): "I can't sleep."

[Ayla closes her journal halfway.]

Ayla (curious): "And why is that?"

Kael (hopeful): "I want to hear your story."

[Ayla exhales softly, glancing at her journal.]

Ayla (dismissive, calm): "It was nothing worth telling. An easy task… not even exciti—"

Kael (insistent): "I want to hear it!"

[Ayla pauses… then gives in.]

Ayla (soft sigh): "...Very well."

[Ayla stands and takes his hand.]

Ayla (gentle): "Come. I will tell it where you may rest."

Kael (obedient): "Okay."

[Scene 3: Ignis Household: Inside: Kael's Chamber - Night]

[The room is quiet. Moonlight seeps through the window. Kael jumps onto his bed and quickly settles under the covers.]

[The bed creaks softly as he lies down. Ayla pulls the blanket over him and tucks him in carefully. She then sits beside him, taking a slow breath.]

Ayla (soft, storytelling tone): "Once… there was a warrior girl, sent on a mission to hunt a necromancer."

Kael (smiling, certain): "That's you, sister."

[Ayla lets out a small, quiet laugh.]

Ayla (light, amused): "Perhaps."

[Ayla looks slightly away, her tone steady but quieter.]

Ayla (continuing): "When the warrior girl reached the village of Atheros… she found something strange."

Ayla (calm, eerie): "The people were silent… all of them. Lying in the streets… on carts… huddled together."

Ayla (lower voice): "They looked as if they were sleeping."

[Kael listens closely, eyes wide.]

Ayla (controlled, cold): "The necromancer was there. Twisted… foul… feeding on what remained."

Ayla (firm): "The warrior girl fought him… and ended him."

[A short pause.]

Ayla (softening slightly): "And when it was done… she carried the sleeping people… placing them in their bed."

Ayla (quiet): "The end."

[Kael stares at her, thinking.]

Kael (curious): "Why were they sleeping?"

[Ayla looks at him, her expression unreadable.]

Ayla (soft, distant): "You will understand… when you are older."

[Kael nods slowly.]

Kael (dreamy, hopeful): "I can't wait… I want to grow up and become a warrior like you, sister."

[Ayla gently brushes his hair.]

Ayla (quiet): "Sleep now, Kael."

[Kael's eyes slowly close. His breathing softens as he drifts into sleep.]

[Ayla watches him for a moment… then quietly stands and leaves.]

[Scene 4: Ignis Household: Inside: Ayla's Chamber - Night]

[The candle burns lower now. Shadows stretch across the stone walls. The room is silent, heavy with the weight of memory. Ayla sits once more at her desk, opening her journal.]

Ayla (low, to herself): "Now… where was I…"

[She grips the quill tighter and continues writing.]

Ayla (writing, cold, truthful): "None were alive."

Ayla (writing): "Every soul in Atheros had fallen… children, elders, warriors… men and women alike."

Ayla (writing, heavy): "Not one was spared."

[The quill pauses for a moment, ink pooling at the tip.]

Ayla (writing, quieter): "I buried them… all that I could."

Ayla (writing): "By my own hands, beneath ash and broken earth."

Ayla (writing, solemn): "No prayers answered them… so I gave what silence I could."

[The candle flickers as a faint draft passes.]

Ayla (writing, final): "The district of Atheros, within the Kingdom of Velanar… is no more."

Act 2

[Scene 1: Flambrise: Ashward District: Private Chamber of Learning - Noon - Two Years Later]

[Kael, now ten years old, stands in a quiet stone chamber beside Teacher Kala, his long-time mentor. For five years, she has trained him in the Volkarian Tongue, a sacred language known only to heirs. Ancient scrolls and dim candlelight surround them as his final lesson comes to an end.]

Theron (calm, serious gaze): "Are you ready, Kael?"

Kael (determined, standing straight): "Yes, Father. I am ready… to learn the history of the Clan of Flambrise."

[The heavy wooden door opens slowly. Grandmaster Theron Ignis steps inside, his presence cold and commanding.]

Theron (turning, gesturing forward): "Come, my son. I will guide you."

[Kael follows him into a dark corridor lined with stone and fading torches.]

[Theron briefly glances back at Kala, his eyes sharp and warning.]

Kala (quiet, lowering her gaze in respect): "..."

[She does not follow.]

[The chamber door closes with a deep echo as father and son walk toward the hidden chambers.]

[Scene 2: Flambrise: Chambers of Hidden Books - Noon]

[Kael and Theron enter a vast stone chamber filled with towering shelves of ancient books. Armed warriors stand silently at every corner, guarding the knowledge within. No outsider is allowed to enter, and no word of this place is ever spoken.]

Theron (calm, low voice): "This is the Chambers of Books. Here lie our histories, our records… and the system of our power. All written in the Volkarian Tongue."

Kael (curious, looking around in awe): "Who can read all of this?"

Theron (firm, emotionless): "Lords, Kings, Princes and Princesses, Royal Chiefs… and heirs of the blood."

[Theron steps toward a stone pedestal and takes a thick, ancient book marked with worn symbols.]

[Theron hands the book to Kael.]

Theron (quiet, watching him closely): "Read. You may learn something."

[Kael slowly opens the book. The pages are filled with strange symbols and drawings of fire in different colors—red, blue, white, black… and newly marked ones: violet and green.]

Kael (confused, frowning slightly): "Father… why are there different kinds of fire? I've only seen red and blue. I've never seen black or white… and these new ones—violet and green?"

Kael (thinking, slightly unsure): "You and Sister have blue fire… I only have red. Mother has red too."

Theron (cold, unwavering): "Read, Kael. You will understand."

[Kael hesitates, then slowly closes the book and hands it back.]

Kael (awkward, scratching his head): "...I—I'll read it later, Father."

[Theron takes the book without a word, turns, and carefully places it back onto the stone pedestal—exactly where it once rested.]

[From beyond the chamber, a voice echoes faintly through the halls.]

Valtara (calling from afar): "Theron! Kael! Ayla! The meal is ready!"

[Theron turns away from the books without hesitation.]

Theron (calm, walking forward): "Come. Your mother is waiting."

[Kael takes one last glance at the book before following his father out of the chamber.]

[Scene 3: Flambrise: Ashward District: Outside near the Ignis Household - Day - Days Later]

[Kael sits alone on a stone bench outside the Ignis household. The air is quiet. His sister is away on another mission, said to be fighting a necromancer. With nothing to do, boredom weighs heavily on him.]

[A young boy approaches. He is the same age as Kael, his clothes worn, his body marked with bruises—yet his face carries a strange, cheerful smile.]

Boy (smiling, casual): "Hi!"

Kael (noticing the bruises, slightly concerned): "Hi… are you hurt or something?"

Boy (shrugging it off, still smiling): "Oh, this? This is nothing."

Kael (curious, sitting up a bit): "Okay… what's your name?"

Boy (grinning): "My name is Lyrien Flynn."

[This is the moment their paths first cross.]

[A low growl comes from Lyrien's stomach.]

Kael (raising an eyebrow): "…I guess you're hungry."

Lyrien (laughing lightly): "Yeah, yeah. I'm hungry. I also don't have food."

Kael (confused): "When did you last eat?"

Lyrien (thinking for a second): "Morning."

Kael (pauses): "…So you ate this morning?"

Lyrien (nodding): "Yep."

Kael (more confused): "And you're already hungry?"

Lyrien (smiling like it's normal): "Yep."

[Kael stares at him for a moment, then sighs.]

Kael (standing up): "...I'll buy you something. What do you want?"

Lyrien (eyes lighting up): "Cheese bread!"

Kael (nodding): "Alright. Follow me."

[The two boys walk off together, the beginning of an unexpected bond.]

Act 3

[Scene 1: Flambrise: Ashward District: Bread Market - Day]

[Kael walks through the busy bread market beside Lyrien. The smell of fresh bread fills the air. Kael bought cheese bread for him, and they walk away from the stalls.]

Lyrien (grateful, smiling): "Thank you!"

[Lyrien hadn't eaten since morning. He takes a bite—and instantly freezes.]

[The taste hits him like an aggressive sugary assault, overwhelming his senses. His cheeks puff out, tears spring to his eyes, and his face turns red. He muffles a sound, swallows hard—then bursts out.]

Lyrien (shouting, overwhelmed): "THIS IS THE BEST FOOD I EVER TASTED!!!"

Kael (startled, looking around): "Woah—don't yell."

Lyrien (laughing, embarrassed): "Oh—sorry, I can't help it!"

[Despite eating cheese bread often, Lyrien treats every bite like it's his first time.]

[Scene 2: AshWard district: Alley - Day]

[Three older boys approach, rage in their eyes, veins bulging from their heads. They are taller, rough, and clearly not friendly. These are not just boys—they are bullies.]

Lead Bully (angry): "Hey, you!"

Lyrien (annoyed, muttering): "…These guys again. They always want something from me. I tried to fight them, but it's three against one."

Kael (glancing at his bruises): "So that's where those came from."

Lead Bully (shouting): "I'm talking to you! Our deal isn't done!"

Lyrien (uneasy): "I—I'm not gonna steal something in the dojo!"

Kael (stepping forward, firm): "Hey. Leave Lyrien alone."

Lead Bully (mocking grin): "Oh look… it's Kael Ignis. What is it, little prince? Saving your princess?"

Kael (cold): "Whatever deal you made you leave him alone."

Bully 1 (challenging): "Oh yeah? Or what?!"

Kael (serious): "Then we fight."

Bully 2 (grinning): "You wanna fight? Come catch these hands!"

[Bully 2 swings. Kael deflects the punch smoothly, then counters with a strike and a sharp kick to the head. Bully 2 stumbles, barely caught by the lead bully.]

Lead Bully (angry): "So you do wanna fight… It's three against two."

[The lead bully attacks. Kael blocks and strikes back with a fast elbow too quick to react.]

Bully 1 (stepping forward): "Now it's you, me, and my partner."

Bully 2 (smirking): "Yeah… while your prince is busy."

Lyrien (serious, taking stance): "…I like those odds."

[Bully 1 swings a kick. Lyrien catches it instantly.]

[Lyrien raises two fingers, his expression sharp.]

Lyrien (focused): "Viper."

[He thrusts his fingers forward, piercing into Bully 1's stomach with precision. The impact forces the air out of him. At the same time, Bully 2 punches Lyrien in the face.]

[Lyrien drops Bully 1 and stumbles back, nose bleeding.]

Lyrien (wiping blood, calm): "Now it's two against two."

[Kael launches a kick at the lead bully. It gets caught, but Kael uses it.]

[He climbs using the grip, pushing off the bully's arms, and slams his knee into the bully's face.]

[He flips back and delivers a final kick to the neck.]

[The lead bully collapses.]

Bully 2 (panicking): "Boss!"

Lyrien (calm, slightly smiling): "So… what now?"

Bully 2 (terrified): "Y-You won't get me!"

[He runs away, fear overtaking him.]

[Silence settles.]

Kael (turning): "So why are they after you?"

Lyrien (catching his breath): "They were rejected by Master Faelan Emberhand, the one who owns the Emberhand Dojo. That's where I live and train."

Lyrien (serious): "They wanted the Emberhand techniques book. They were rejected because of their intentions… so now they're after me."

Kael (nodding): "…Now I get it."

[They pause.]

Lyrien (curious): "I heard royal heirs can read, speak, and understand the Volkarian Tongue."

Kael (casual): "Yeah, I can. Why?"

Lyrien (excited): "There's a cave nearby… with old letters. I can't read them."

Lyrien (grinning): "Wanna come?"

Kael (without hesitation): "Sure."

[Lyrien takes the lead, guiding Kael toward the unknown.]

[Scene 3: Flambrise: Ashward District: Mountain of Vartacs: Cave - Noon to Afternoon]

[The bright sun shines upon the Mountain of Vartacs. The skin of the stone is steep and unforgiving. Below it, a cave opens—dark, deep, and silent.]

Kael (in awe, looking up): "Woah..."

Lyrien (casual, tilting his head): "You've never seen a cave before?"

Kael (honest, curious): "I've seen caves before… but not like this. I thought caves were just holes. A cave inside a mountain… this is new to me."

Lyrien (grinning): "You've got a lot to learn. Now come—read the old letters."

[They step inside.]

[The cave swallows the light. Darkness fills every corner—so thick even trained eyes struggle to see.]

Lyrien (confused, looking around): "It's so dark… I swear it was brighter before!"

Kael (calm): "Ignite your fire. We'll use it as a torch."

[Both raise their hands. Flames ignite—burning steadily, casting flickering light across the cave walls.]

[They walk deeper.]

Lyrien (pointing ahead): "We're almost there."

[They arrive at a massive stone wall, covered in ancient Volkarian text carved deep into the surface.]

Kael (quiet, amazed): "…This… this is a Wall of History."

Lyrien (confused): "A wall of history?"

Kael (explaining, eyes scanning the carvings): "My teacher told me about these. They're found in hidden places like caves. The walls are unbreakable… no one knows who made them, or how they were written."

Lyrien (impatient): "Can you read it at least?"

Kael (focused): "…I'll read it."

[Time passes. The light from their flames flickers as the sun outside begins to shift.]

[It is now afternoon.]

Kael (closing his eyes briefly): "…I've read it all."

Lyrien (curious): "So? What is it?"

Kael (amazed, almost breathless): "It's incredible… It's about Ignis Flaros—my ancestor."

Kael (continuing): "He was the chief of Flambrise. He had three children—two sons and one daughter. Solon Ignis… Phyro Ignis… and Vesta Ignis."

Kael (thinking): "Ignis was also the cousin of the legendary hero Kaelios Flaros. He fought in the Great War of Volkaris… but no one knows what happened to him."

Kael (quietly): "Father said Phyro is our ancestor… Ignis was the first of our fami—"

[Lyrien yawns loudly.]

Kael (stops, staring): "…"

Lyrien (shrugging): "…What?"

Kael (silent): "…"

Lyrien (defensive, waving hands): "Okay, okay! I got bored! We've been here forever, and you explain a lot—and so, so lo—"

Theron (calm, echoing from the darkness): "Kael."

[Both Kael and Lyrien freeze.]

[Their eyes widen. Their faces pale. A chill runs down their spines as they slowly turn.]

[Theron stands behind them, his presence heavy even in the dim firelight.]

Kael (panicking): "F-Father—I'm sorry! I'm sorry I shared the knowledge of the sacred tongue, I—"

Theron (calm, cutting him off): "Do not be sorry."

Kael (confused): "…What?"

Lyrien (also confused): "…What?"

Theron (steady, composed): "It is a Wall of History. Royals are meant to share history with their people—to know where they came from… how they came to be… and what came before them."

Theron (slightly firm): "There is no taboo in sharing what is written for all to see."

Kael (hesitant): "…Then why are the books hidden?"

Theron (glancing briefly at Lyrien): "Those books are sacred to our own. I will not speak of them here… not while Lyrien is present."

Lyrien (blinking): "…Wait—how do you know my name?"

Theron (calm): "My friend, Master Faelan, told me about you."

Lyrien (relaxing a bit): "…Oh. Okay."

Theron (turning to Kael): "Kael."

[Theron takes a slow breath.]

Theron (dry tone, slight hint of humor): "Your mother is looking for you. If I don't bring you back… she may take my soul from my body."

Kael (nervous): "…Okay."

Kael (turning): "See you, Lyrien."

Lyrien (smiling): "See ya!"

Theron (to Lyrien, firm): "Go home. Before Faelan closes the gates and leaves you outside."

[The flames flicker as they begin to leave the cave.]

[The Wall of History remains… silent, ancient, and watching.]

[Scene 4: Flambrise: Ignis Household: Chambers of Hidden Books - Sunset]

[The sun sets beyond the windows, casting orange light into the chamber. Kael stands alone among the shelves, quietly searching.]

[He studies the profiles of royal members—names, histories, powers.]

[His eyes stop.]

[Kaelios Flaros.]

[Kael takes the record and reads carefully.]

[Kaelios Flaros—the only known wielder of White Flames. A runeseeker.]

[Kael then opens the Book of the System of Power, flipping through its ancient pages.]

[The words confirm it.]

[White flames—unknown. No recorded wielder… except one.]

[Too powerful. Said to burn anything.]

Kael (thinking, focused): "If white flames are unknown… then Kaelios is the only one who ever wielded them."

Kael (thinking deeper): "He was a runeseeker… so maybe… he didn't inherit it."

Kael (quiet realization): "Maybe… he found a way to unlock it."

[Kael slowly closes the book, determination forming in his eyes.]

[Scene 5: Flambrise: Ignis Household: Ayla's Chambers - Evening]

[Ayla sits at her desk, writing in her journal—documenting her recent mission against necromancers.]

[A knock echoes on the door.]

Ayla (calm): "Come in."

[The door opens. Kael steps inside.]

Ayla (curious): "What brings you here?"

Kael (serious, but calm): "I've made a decision."

Kael (looking at her): "You're going to be the next chief of the clan… right?"

Ayla (nodding): "Yes. I am. Why?"

Kael (steady, sincere): "Then… since I can't become chief…"

Kael (determined): "I'm going to become a runeseeker."

[Pause.]

Kael (soft, but strong): "I'll find the white flames… and give that power to you."

[Ayla's expression softens. Relief, mixed with emotion.]

Ayla (gentle, almost smiling): "Kael… thank you."

Ayla (quiet, honest): "You don't need to suffer more than I do."

Kael (firm, hopeful): "You'll stop the necromancers. You'll end the cycle of war between us and them."

Kael (looking at her with belief): "With that power… you can do it."

[Ayla looks at him… then nods.]

Ayla (soft, confident): "…Yeah."

[Silence, but warm.]

Kael (turning to leave): "I've got to go, sister."

Ayla (watching him): "Go, Kael."

[Kael exits the room.]

[Ayla looks down at her journal… then closes it slowly.]

[Outside, the last light of sunset fades.]
